I fell and fractured my ankle a week ago. I was told it’s a stable fracture to be treated like a sprain. I also really tore up my knee, which has been very slow to heal.

A week on and I’m still incredibly swollen, bruised and my ankle is becoming more and more painful. My knee is still very sore, the actual skin is numb but I have pain at the base and top of my kneecap. It also feels a little unstable and I am getting sharp stabbing pains to one side of my kneecap.

My GP isn’t interested. They say that I have to go to physio if I need, as it’s a muscular injury.

Physio has an eight week minimum wait for a video consultation.

This obviously isn’t an A&e situation (shamefully I did go to A&E for the initial injury because it had a very short wait time, it seemed to be a quiet time of day!), and they wouldn’t take a look at my knee anyway as it’s a “superficial injury”.

Minor injuries is now by appointment only in my area and appointments are gone within a minute of opening.

I’ve tried the pharmacy for the graze that isn’t healing but they just say to dress it and keep it clean and it’ll heal “eventually”.

I feel like I’m being turned away at every turn but I’m in so much pain, I’m left feeling sick by lunchtime because my ankle is that sore, and by the end of the day I can’t stand walking around. I have basic physio exercises from my last sprain years ago but I can’t do them, but I can’t be seen by anyone.

Please don’t suggest a private physio assessment, it’s not within my budget at all. AIBU to just feel despondent and like I can’t get help anywhere?

OP, take the advice from others here. Leaving it will make it get worse and you'll end up going off work for much longer. Tell your manager you're going to A&E, explain everything you've told us to A&E, ask them to re-assess your ankle and knee, and don't leave without a proper treatment plan in place.

I was told I could! He said it’s minor, stable, and just to be treated like a severe sprain - POLICE (Protection, Optimal Loading, Ice, Compression, and Elevation). I was sent away being told to buy a compression tubi grip from boots and not go hiking. No crutches or anything like that, and to do 20 minutes on of ice and 40 minutes off. I’m elevating as much as possible at work and icing as and when I can

I was given crutches, a physio appointment and advice to avoid baring weight for a week following a sprain. It was slightly swollen with no bruising

MummyJ36 · 17/09/2026 11:06

You need to accept that if you leave this it will take longer to heal. You’re an adult and you have a choice if you wish to take this path, particularly with regards to prioritising work over your own health. If that’s what you decide to do then you need to let it go and just get on with it. It will hurt, it will take longer, but you need to own that decision and distract yourself rather than revisiting it on multiple threads.

Alternatively you can take the advice given on this thread, phone in sick (even those in very critical jobs call in sick sometimes), go back to a&e, make it clear what you’ve told us here and ask for a second opinion.

spiderlight · 17/09/2026 11:29

I remember your other thread. You really need to get a second opinion and another x-ray of your ankle - I was worried initially when they didn't even give you a boot or strap it up properly, and if the pain is no better now, you can't carry on as you are. I know it's a logistical nightmare but you're risking permanent damage. Don't let that one arsey nurse put you off asking for it to be checked again. Your knee sounds infected as well if it's pumping out crap :(

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 17/09/2026 07:26

Every packet I've had says every 6 hours and no more than 4 in 24 hours.

I’m literally looking at a pack now. 1-2 tablets every four hours, up to three times a day. No more than 6 tablets in 24 hours.

OP - call 111 if it helps you to present back again with the doctor. They will definitely tell you to go back.

In the meantime, DD has a severe sprain and we got crutches for 30 quid from Argos. The consultant also recommended stirrup ankle supports - like this one

https://www.healthandcare.co.uk/ankle-supports-braces/02AR.html?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20630176213&gbraid=0AAAAAD7hp2rnPyO869nMu1FiuXqIVG821&gclid=CjwKCAjwn67VBhBnEiwAXUIN1QocaO9taLdF-VZckAJKG4xUare2l-i_81wOpZfI2-KWJMId0MSb1xoClToQAvD_BwE

But please contact the NHS again. Don’t live with pain because you had a run-in with a twat.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 17/09/2026 11:36

I commented on your other thread but there are a few things that I experienced/am experiencing that may be relevant.

I had two falls in 6 months - each smashed a different knee. The first one was December. It is still really painful and numb. The second one was in June. In the week or so after that fall I was bruised from the top of my thigh to my toes. My knee broke out in huge blood blisters which were lanced at the surgery. These blisters were larger than a 50p and as high or higher than my finger. They were lanced and dressed at the surgery but continued to weep for weeks afterwards. The outside of my knee is still numb but I feel it if I press on the other side. The GP told me that nerve damage like that can take ages to heal and may never be normal again. Also my ankle ballooned straight away and I still can't wear my normal shoes 6 months on.

I know the injuries are in different places but the injuries seem similar. My GP said to take paracetamol and use something like Voltarol - obviously not taking Ibuprofen at the same time as an Ibuprofen gel.

hevs03 · 17/09/2026 11:38

OP, you work for the NHS yes ? So should your Manager get 'funny' about you having to take some time off of work to heal then you surely will be covered by your HR Dept. You're obviously not faking this injury, you can obtain your medical records should you need to prove anything, you will not be doing yourself any favours by not going back to A&E or similar, if anything not getting reassessed will quite possibly cause your injuries to take more time to heal.

You will not be the first person to revisit A&E or re-call 111 or a Nurse, some injuries become worse before they get better, you don't want to be in pain so please go and get seen to and demand better care and attention i.e. the need for a boot or crutches. Good luck

Avocadotoasted · 17/09/2026 11:45

Right, let us see the knee and we can advise

The ankle bruising going up your leg is pretty normal for a bad sprain.

Its sore because 5000 steps is too much - you need to be doing as little as possible whilst still loading it a bit, otherwise it will take forever to heal

Breadcat24 · 17/09/2026 11:45

@ihowlforyou I am sorry that you are in so much pain. Is there another minor injuries unit that you can get into? Or can you book a telephone appointment with your GP to discuss another x ray? Round here if the GP approves you going to X ray at the hospital you can rock up at anytime a have it- so after work hours potentially.
I am concerned you have no ankle support but are weight bearing
Could you buy something like this from amazon
https://www.amazon.co.uk/BraceUP-Ankle-Support-Stability-Tendonitis/dp/B0CTSK6SG3/ref=sr_1_6?sr=8-6
Also regarding the knee oozing - will the pharmacist prescribe antibiotics?
For cleaning it I found these good this summer when cleaning a knee replacement wound- because they are alcohol based they dry quick
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lewis-Premium-Saline-Sterile-Alcohol/dp/B09FBF5388/ref=sr_1_6_pp?sr=8-6

wishing you well

Lararoft · 17/09/2026 11:55

So you have pus coming out of your knee.. you’ve heard of infection yes? And sepsis? Get yourself to A&e and stop being so daft and passive please!!

PurpleLovecats · 17/09/2026 11:57

I doubt she will reply today, she will be at work 🙄

Dontbesonosy · 17/09/2026 12:07

I can’t get to the end of the thread.
You are in pain and the painkillers aren’t helping.
Do your colleagues know what happened to you? Are they understanding?
Go back to A&E, and take someone with you.
You may be able to get a pair of crutches from a charity shop, if that helps you to get about.
The NHS seem terribly wasteful about things like that - our local charity shop is full of crutches, sticks and strollers.

Emma6cat · 17/09/2026 12:08

If its getting worse it needs looking at again.. unfortunately you have to be your own advocate in these circumstances.

Jadebanditchillipepper · 17/09/2026 12:08

I haven't read the whole thread, sorry, but a stable fracture means that you can weight bear if you have to but not that you should carry on as normal and carry on Going to work!

The treatment for a sprain would be RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) until it starts to get better. You absolutely should not be working until it is significantly better - of course it is more swollen because you're walking 5000 steps a day on it!

I don't think there's much else they can do for a stable fracture, but if you have got pus coming out of your knee, you need it cleaned, dressed and antibiotics.

Please go off sick for a week minimum. Keep that leg up. Carry on with icing it and pain relief and hopefully it will start to improve. It won't get better if you keep working and walking on it

Jadebanditchillipepper · 17/09/2026 12:24

Sorry, just been back a read some more. Your knee is numb because grazing it damages the superficial nerves supplying that area - the sensation should come back, except in scarred areas which will always stay numb.

For your knee, inadine dressings (gauze soaked in iodine) with something absorbent over the top should help until it dries out a bit (as long as you're not allergic to iodine).

But please, go off sick. I work for the NHS as well, I know how stretched things are. Yes, technically, you are fit to work at a desk sat down, but you are not fit to do a 5000 step commute there and back. You could offer to work from home if that's feasible, but if not, you need to go off sick. If you're worried about a disciplinary from your manager, you could refer yourself to occupational health. But you should not be expected to do anything that will make this worse.

Please take pictures of the swelling and bruising so that you have evidence in case if issues later. I would contact your GP and ask for a fit note.

Good luck. I hope it gets better soon

PurpleThistle7 · 17/09/2026 12:38

You will need to take time off work. Nothing will help except proper rest. Their staffing issues are not your problem bluntly. If you got hit by a bus tomorrow they’d have to figure it out so respect yourself and your body and give yourself time to heal. I reckon you should be signed off 3-4 weeks. And you can buy crutches, you don’t need anyone to give them to you.

I appreciate how exhausting it it - I have an issue with my knee. It’s awful but not excruciating and never gets worse (or better) so I’m just ignoring it. Practically impossible to see a GP here and I know they couldn’t do anything anyway. So I get how demoralising the whole thing is but looking at your ankle you have has a serious injury and there’s not much anyone can do for you if you won’t take the time you need to heal.

GreenCa · 17/09/2026 12:52

If you work in a hospital you could just contact the occupational health team, whilst you are actually at work, and explain the situation. In my hospital at least, they would arrange for it to be looked at again if felt warranted and can certainly fast track staff to physio.

ihowlforyou · 17/09/2026 06:58

The packet says every four hours.

i really hope you haven’t been taking more than 4g paracetemol in 24 hours (8 500mg tablets). If you have you need to get to A&E asap as you can cause liver damage. Paracetemol is not something you mess about with, can also take some time for symptoms to show up. You really need to address this if nothing else.

Silvercoconut · 17/09/2026 13:38

I think there is more going on here than a fractured ankle and a gammy knee.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND how you have managed to counter every single piece of advice that you have been given, with an excuse as to why you can't, shouldn't, or won't.

If you are seriously concerned about this, just bloody well get it sorted, this is starting to smack a little bit of martyrdom.
Apologies if this comes across as a bit mean but it's countless, countless responses from you justifying your inaction.

ihowlforyou · 17/09/2026 15:14

Today has been fucking wank.

I called the fracture clinic - I was very rudely told it’s for serious injuries only and if it was deemed necessary I’d have been referred. I called MIU to try and get an appointment and they said they would not give a second opinion under any circumstances. I waddled down to a&e and got turned away at triage, I was signposted to MIU!!! I feel utterly fed up

I haven’t. I’m an adult, I can manage my pain meds

Have you tried calling occupational health OP?

Needmorelego · 17/09/2026 15:19

@ihowlforyou why did A+E triage turn you away?
Go back.
Did you tell them MIU had already said no to you?

Hobnobbled · 17/09/2026 15:19

ihowlforyou · 16/09/2026 22:17

I an unable to go off sick. It’s just not feasible, I’d be letting a team of people down.

That's their problem!

Needmorelego · 17/09/2026 15:22

@ihowlforyou did you tell A+E you are worried about an infection being in your knee?
