Club Bars - far superior to Penguins arent they?

Found them on sale in Aldi for about £1.25 for 7

Theyve shrunk ofc but are so delicious

Can only find the orange ones ot the 'gold' ones, which i suspect are white chocolate (not a fan)

I had one, then had a penguin orange - penguin was just subpar. Too much biscuit - the bite in a Club before you get to the actual biscuit is immense

Anyway - who am I if not a woman who shares her random thoughts with mumsnet?!

I had forgotten all about Fruit Clubs! Can you get them anywhere any more?

Mint Clubs - 10 x better than a penguin any day of the week!

Orange flavoured anything (unless its a chocolate orange) is wrong.

Viscounts were wrapped in silver paper. Silver. Literally the biscuit of royalty.

There were orange and green. You could scoop off the "cream" bit with your teeth before tucking into the tasty biscuit.

Shortbread I think it was.

Yep, and that's exactly what I always used to do! They were definitely shortbread, which I love.

My school friend’s mum worked there and she would give my mum loads. Can still taste them!

They were gorgeous, haven't had any for years so dunno if they still taste as good, probably full of palm oil now.

My mum used to work in Jacobs biscuits where they made Club. They had a staff shop where they sold boxes of rejected biscuits to the staff for pennies. We loved it when she brought Club home, orange or mint not the disgusting fruit ones. Very often some of them had been through the chocolate dipping process twice or better still were the ones that were just solid blocks of chocolate. Could never understand the love for Penguins.

You unlocked a memory - fruit flavoured clubs, were they raisin or something? Purple in colour? 🤢🤢

They dont have the foil cover now which is a shame

Wow, I don't think I've eaten a Club in probably 25 years. Yet I can still taste them! Thick, very sweet chocolate... And that foil-backed paper they used to be wrapped in... Really distinctive texture!

Literally, when the thought popped into my head, I could literally taste it! 😄

I like a mint Club the best, but they’re vastly superior to a Penguin. And they know it, which is why Penguin have to entice people with a joke.
I’m also partial to a Viscount and a Gold bar.

Oh yes! But far nicer in the 1980s lunchbox. Mint, orange, raisin, “milk” (which was just plain), not sure if Gold bars existed in those days. Superior to Penguin, close unentitled relative of the Viscount biscuit.

Yes they are the muts. And they give them out free at blood donations. (Well not free -you have to pay in blood!)

several supermarkets do penguin knock offs now. I’m very fond of the Aldi ones

Theyre going for £1 now in sainsburys

I bought loads for dd! But now will try her with a club and donate the penguins to the school

Yes I remember them.. they were red originally weren’t they. I’m pretty sure I remember the orange ones having a queen on the front too.. could be wrong though.

anyone remember Trios? And that large mouthed cartoon kid who used to shout “triiiiiiiiio I want a trio and I want one now”

I remember a playing card style one but I thought it was a King and it was purple - with raisins in I think. God biscuits were so much better in the olden days!

Edited to add apologies - I realise this mystery has already been solved!

My DH whole heartedly agrees with you. I’m not overly fused, a bit of chocolate and biscuit either way to me, so I buy what ever is on offer for the mint or orange, however I love a Gold bar! It’s not quite white chocolate, it’s got something like caramel in it.

Another one who can't stand a Penguin. They tasted artificial and nasty long before it was the norm for so many biscuits. And very stingey on the chocolate.

It's an orange Viscount for me.

Probably not the right person to talk to because I hate both. I have a colleague who has a big box of penguins he offers to anyone who enters his office. I don’t know why it’s specifically only penguins, I’ve never asked him. I don’t really like biscuits in truth and wouldn’t be sad to never eat them again. Cheap chocolate is also rank. I’m getting old.

Yeah the fruit, raisin I think they were in a purple wrapper, I hated them and they always tasted stale 😝

I have a colleague that eats Penguin bars. It is a highlight of the day when we stop work to hear the joke on the wrapper.

Whatever happened to 54321 bars? They were a proper treat in the 80s even if the adverts were flipping annoying

I remember having deeply serious conversations with school friends about this when we were eight or nine, and the purple snack and Club Milk were the morning break snacks of choice. I championed the Club Milk, but it was closely-fought!
