AIBU to think grapefruit is the perfect fruit?

Grapefruit is the perfect fruit.

  • perfect balance between sweet and sharp
  • can be eaten alone or added to salads
  • just looks nice (especially the pink ones) all jewel like
  • low calorie
  • rich in useful stuff - fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

OK - not so great if you are on statins, I will concede that.

AIBU or is grapefruit the bestest fruit ever?

That’s fascinating @Redheadedstepchild. Might start wafting slices of pink grapefruit under DHs nose 😆

I think rubbing some slices on your neck and wrists might work.

Also, now we know why you can't get broccoli for love nor money in Whitby over the Goth Weekend.

MarzipanAngel · 13/09/2026 14:49

There is no perfect fruit. Fruit is way too unpredictable to be good to eat. Forrest Gump should have said “life is like eating fruit, you never know what you’re going to get”.

I only eat plain fruit about twice a year and generally regret it.
Grapefruit is probably one of the better ones as you already know it’s going to be bitter so it’s no surprise unlike a blueberry or a strawberry.

JeanSimmons · 13/09/2026 14:53

YABU. It's utterly rank and gives me heartburn. Why does something being 'low calorie' make it good?

roseymoira · 13/09/2026 09:34

Oh contraire, I think you’ll find kiwi is the best fruit

Not if you're allergic to it! (Which I am.)

Tarkan · 13/09/2026 15:00

Another on medication who can’t have it (one is a calcium channel blocker for a heart condition and the other is an SSRI).

I do quite enjoy eating a slice of lemon at times though. 😁

Waitingfordoggo · 13/09/2026 15:02

IMO the best fruits are the ones that we don’t think of as fruits, namely peppers and tomatoes.

Grapefruit gives me PTSD as my mum
uses to serve it as a starter in the 70's😢

With a glacé cherry in the centre?

XMissPlacedX · 13/09/2026 09:28

I voted Unreasonable because you need a masters degree in mechanics to open them without either wasting it or cutting yourself.

How do you "open" other citrus fruit then?

mathanxiety · 13/09/2026 15:15

The best grapefruit is the pink 'Texas grapefruit' you can buy in the US. It has none of the 'bile' flavour of other types of grapefruit.

Does anyone remember the days when a half grapefruit with a Glace cherry was served as a starter in restaurants?

hotmumshit · 13/09/2026 15:16

Yabu, it is of course the sable grape

I can't STAND grapefruit! I eat basically every other fruit, and am not fussy with food, but dislike the flavour and therefore how it seems to flavour everything else it is with.

Same here! I like every other fruit except grapefruit, and along with coriander is the only food I can think of that I couldn't even eat to be polite.

mathanxiety · 13/09/2026 15:27

The best fruits are fresh Missouri peaches and perfectly ripe Victoria plums. Honorable mention - greengage plums and ripe gooseberries, plus loganberries.

Snap! I don't like coriander either, but can eat pretty much any other foods, apart from very spicy things, or licorice.

Abitlosttoday · 13/09/2026 16:14

When I was pregnant with my first baby I ate a pink grapefruit each day. It was such a strong craving. I wonder why. I still like it, but not so passionately. Must be pink though.

DON'T eat/drink grapefruit if you are on the combined contraceptive pill. It can reduce its reliability. Pharmacist warned me.

So,despite agreeing with you, OP, grapefruit is a pleasure denied to me 😢

This is not true. Grapefruit juice can block the enzyme which breaks drugs down which means you have a higher level of the drug in the body. If anything, you would have a higher level of oestrogen in the blood so increased risk of side effects. It doesn’t reduce it’s reliability.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 13/09/2026 16:50

It's lovely, I agree. I'm not sure if I'd say it's the BEST.

I posted to say that I made a yummy pink grapefruit posset that you should try (Tom Kerridge recipe).

Oh! I forgot about liquorice! Yes that's another thing I can't bear. I genuinely can't think of anything else though. I don't mind liquorice tasting things like fennel, oddly.

Flippin eck Tucker, for years that pharmacist has had me terrified to look at a grapefruit in case I got pregnant!
He definitely said that grapefruit could reduce its effectiveness, I recall his words clearly, so I'm assuming he's given this wrong information to countless women.
Oh well, we're only women. Doesn't matter if we're not correctly informed eh. I'm off to read more about this. Thanks.

DramaAlpaca · 13/09/2026 17:07

I love grapefruit. Until about ten years ago I used to have it for breakfast every day, but like others on the thread I can't now because of some medication I'm on.

That’s annoying you’ve missed out on the joy of grapefruit for all this time!
It annoys me as a pharmacist myself when I hear dodgy information being given out. If you still see that pharmacist, make sure you put him right!

Some other medicines can reduce its effectiveness like some anti epileptics and St John Wort as these are enzyme inducers (they break down the drug quicker). Grapefruit juice is an enzyme inhibitor so it stops the drug being broken down by the enzyme so it can build up.

I only went to that pharmacy during lockdown and I've since moved house. I would know him if I saw him though, that's if he's still there. He looked like a viking and I was very grateful to him for telling me this when nobody else had. The irony. I am sure he'd just gaslight me if I tried to put him straight though. Misogyny if you ask me.

Restaurant near me does a lovely crab linguine with grapefruit and I'm going to bloody enjoy it next time, without picking out the grapefruit! Thanks again.

Or clopidogrel.

Persimmon is actually the perfect fruit.
Admit it.

EBearhug · 15/09/2026 00:39

No. Mangosteen.
