AIBU to think grapefruit is the perfect fruit?

Grapefruit is the perfect fruit.

  • perfect balance between sweet and sharp
  • can be eaten alone or added to salads
  • just looks nice (especially the pink ones) all jewel like
  • low calorie
  • rich in useful stuff - fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

OK - not so great if you are on statins, I will concede that.

AIBU or is grapefruit the bestest fruit ever?

black coffee and half a grapefruit was the breakfast of choice in the 1970s

they should tinker with these medications so we can eat grapefruit

DancingLions · 13/09/2026 09:52

I'm also on medication and shouldn't have grapefruit but I do have it sometimes as I really love it. If I feel dehydrated nothing hits the spot like grapefruit.

My doctor told me the whole no grapefruit with certain medications thing was because x amount of years ago (before the advice) some young people died and that was the cause. I can't remember the full details of what he said. But the point was he said the occasional one was fine.

HoraceCope · 13/09/2026 09:53

i think my nurse said the occasional one was ok
i am going to push the boat out and buy a pink grapefruit today!

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 13/09/2026 09:53

My dsis would have agreed - but anti-rejection drugs made it a no go.

Normal people, as I always pointed out to her, have to sprinkle so much sugar on said fruit to make it palatable that any health benefits are lost.

In short. OP, you are most definitely BU.

HoraceCope · 13/09/2026 09:54

as a child we would sometimes have them with brown sugar, put under the grill for a while, delicious

curtaintwitcher78 · 13/09/2026 09:56

DON'T eat/drink grapefruit if you are on the combined contraceptive pill. It can reduce its reliability. Pharmacist warned me.

So,despite agreeing with you, OP, grapefruit is a pleasure denied to me 😢

ScottBakula · 13/09/2026 10:09

I love grapefruit too , it's getting hard to get hold of the traditional yellow ones now which I prefer, I love the sharpness!
I didnt realise so many drugs made it a no go for people, that's sad.

Like pp I also like kiwi , and raspberries.
Currently I have ;
Grapefruit,
Kiwi,
Braburn apples,
Pineapple
Grapes
And grapes
I usually have either raspberries, blackberries or strawberries in too.

Edited to say I also have passion fruit in too

I’m on essential medicine that keeps me alive that I can’t have grapefruit with (or Seville oranges, no marmalade either 😭). Initially, I was on one treatment for a year and I was like, right, I can do this! I used to look longingly at all the grapefruits at the shop. Now I’m on a different medicine and forever. No grapefruit. One day I may get wild and risk it. 😂

Please don't - a friend ended up in hospital with kidney problems because he decided to risk it.

HeartShapedBox · 13/09/2026 10:33

I absolutely love grapefruit! A bit confused about comments saying it's a pain to prepare though- you peel it and eat it, or cut it into quarters and eat it out the skin, no more faff than an orange.

bridgetreilly · 13/09/2026 10:33

If only it tasted nice.

All depends on the medication. For me it’s BP medication. If I had grapefruit it would increase the effect and could lower my blood pressure too much.
I did wonder if I could take a lower dose one day and have a little grapefruit, but concluded that that would be silly.

That said, I did have a couple of segments of pomelo last Christmas 😬

Cotopaxi · 13/09/2026 10:37

CrowMate · 13/09/2026 09:17

I prefer pomelo, but that has the disadvantage of only being available for a few months a year and also a pig to prepare.

I bought one of them once. Acres of pith.

Itsbeenalongtimeincoming · 13/09/2026 10:43

If you are a super taster (10% of the population) it tastes bitter and disgusting.

CrowMate · 13/09/2026 11:07

Cotopaxi · 13/09/2026 10:37

You have to remove every bit of skin and pith. Unless you like bitter things.

HorseandHeron · 13/09/2026 11:07

I love it, especially pink grapefruit. In winter, white and red chicory leaves, pink grapefruit, walnut and blue cheese salad is a recipe for lifting your mood. I love it.

But it totally cancels out my ADHD medication so most of the time, I can't have it. It must have some powerful active ingredients to make so many drugs react to it. (I didn;t know about statins and SSRIs.)

If it were perfect though, surely it wouldn't have such thick bitter peel that makes your hands feel both dry and sticky even after you wash them, and pith that gets stuck under your nails. Perfect fruit should have edible peel.

pigmygoatsinjumpers · 13/09/2026 11:14

I love grapefruit but I am supposed to avoid as I am on the BP med Amlodipine. So I have only had one grapefruit in four years.

MargaretThursday · 13/09/2026 11:16

It's an amazing fruit with the most fantastic skills. Despite having a 360 degree option, when I stick the first spoon in, it always gets me straight in the eye.

They should seriously research its accuracy for English Football team/Nasa/defence industry.

BlingOnion · 13/09/2026 11:18

Apparently like coriander, it tastes different to different people. IMO it’s bitter and interacts with too many medications.

Itsasecretnow · 13/09/2026 11:20

It tastes like earwax to me! I’ve no idea how - or if - I even know that, but it still tastes like it! 😄

HeartInRed · 13/09/2026 11:20

YABU to start a thread showing off that you can eat grapefruit when I can’t!

croisette · 13/09/2026 11:21

Too many are too sour for me. White nectarine or peach for me! But by the time they reach the Uk they are often dry so it’s a holiday treat for me. Divine 🍑

I don't buy oranges either, for the exact same reason. Only citrus I eat regularly are satsumas because there are plenty of nice fruits that are much easier to process, no knife needed, no unpleasant pith and no juice will squirt at me at any point. It's not difficult, but it is objectively less easy.

If I absolutely loved them I would bother with the admin but I don't think they're really good enough to be worth it.

autumnboys · 13/09/2026 11:23

I liked it but can’t eat it now as it interferes with my bp medication

UnwillingAdvocate · 13/09/2026 11:27

Grapefruit interacts with certain types of medication and stops the intestine absorbing them effectively. Particularly warfarin. So not perfect for everyone.

QueenOfToast · 13/09/2026 11:35

I love grapefruit AND pomelo. If they’re in the house I have to eat them until they’re gone. However, I’m lazy and they’re a faff to prepare so I don’t often bother with them. What do they contain to make them so addictive AND to interact with so many meds?
