I’ve been out at a 80s day disco today… loads of fun. But it struck me that people were still delighted by MJ… why? He was a wrong ‘un of the very worst kind. How come he hasn’t been cancelled?!

If you just stopped lying to yourself for a second you would realise that abuse victims primarily remember the abuse - not always all of the exact circumstances of where it took place.

That does not mean they are lying.

Exactly.

Right but we wouldn’t let kids watch Jim’ll Fix It though would we?

A lot of people did.

Kids are watching much worse now.

beigetriangle · 14/09/2026 10:02

he was for a while in the early 00

but then was found not guilty so he re-started his career

Sadcafe · 14/09/2026 10:03

As many posts have said,he wasn’t ever found guilty of any crimes. Yes he was odd and probably on the edge of what would be considered acceptable, but not guilty, additionally, his music is pretty good.

A 30-40 year old man having sleepovers, in the same room, in the same bed, with unrelated pre-teen boys isnt, and has never been considered acceptable, or in any way normal, behaviour....
And being talented isnt a get out clause for that.

Call me old fashioned but im a great believer in innocent until proven guilty

Which is fair enough in an isolated incidence of someone being accused of something. In MJ’s case there is an hell of a lot of smoke for there not to be a fire.

Then I hope you never do a role which requires you to safeguard children or vulnerable adults.

I accept the verdict.

And I also believe he was very likely a child abuser.

These are not mutually exclusive concepts, by any stretch.

And that's your opinion which you are absolutely entitled to, but others are entitled to believe he was innocent and still enjoy his music. Which is why he's not 'cancelled' as the OP asked

Well he was a white heterosexual male celebrity so the rules never applied to him.

Michael Jackson was white? What on earth are you talking about?

TheFriendlyPotato · 14/09/2026 13:01

I suspect there is a racialised component here. He was idolised as a music god by a whole generation of black african americans, who viewed him as something to aspire to.

It is very hard for people to separate themselves from cultural icons, especially ones who were adored.

Also his whole schtick was compassion, kindness, and healing. He portrayed a wholesome character in the public eye. Plus he grew up in the public eye, making people feel almost like he was family.

Yes he wasnt convicted yet neither was Saville. Saville wasnt adored in the same way. He was often seen as an oddball.

Brokentoes85 · 14/09/2026 13:26

He was abused and exploited from childhood. He was a "weirdo" but the families all took a payoff. If my kid was abused, I'd never take money from the abuser.

He was an easy target and a victim.

This hypothetical virtue is entirely notional.

Have you been in that situation? Have you ever had to make a decision that your son really does not want to testify in a high profile sex abuse trial against one of the most famous men in world? Do you know anyone who’s been the complainant in a sex offence court case? It’s horrendous even for adults.

Might it not make sense that as the abuser will get off without jail time - a settlement to pay damages would be an alternative form of justice - and would at least cover your son’s therapy, education and long term need to keep a low profile.

Even if your lawyers advised that you were unlikely to
win?
Sexual abuse is notoriously difficult to prove and the statistics are low for bringing those responsible to justice. This would have been an even greater challenge where the perpetrator just happens to be of the richest men in the world.

It's not a good look not to do even a cursory google to establish that, yes, there were discrepancies in what they said in that documentary.

You said the judge "sent them packing" numerous times because they "can't get their timeline in order".

When the actual reason was the statute of limitations (where the law in California has since been changed) and whether Jackson's corporations owed a duty to protect. Technical points of law, not credibility.

Glad they are finally getting their trial.

HRTQueen · 14/09/2026 14:35

Becuase he was not found guilty

Because his talent and influence is not matched by anyone else

Because he is still making millions of $'s for many many people even years after his death and shall continue to do so (this is the real reason, but if he wasn't so talented this would not be the case)

HorseandHeron · 14/09/2026 14:35

ZanyMaker · 12/09/2026 20:02

So is Jimmy Saville but none of his old tv programmes are repeated anywhere. They’ve even taken Scott Mills presented Top of the Pops off IPlayer.

But Saville was known to be a serial abuser. There are many cases where people have come forward to describe what he did. Nothing proven about MJ. He was definitely weird and had a fixation about childhood but that doesn't automatically mean he was a sexual predator.

Edited to add that I am not saying he is innocent. He may well be guilty.

HRTQueen · 14/09/2026 14:37

Jimmy Savile was certainly a big celebrity but his influence on pop culture is just not comparable

There is no money to be made from JS

Many came forward to describe what MJ did and Savile was never tried in court. People simply choose to believe Savile’s victims but not MJ’s.

If the tide turned and the US launched a full investigation into MJ and asked victims to come forward in confidence - I have no doubt more would do so.

What makes him a sexual predator is the men who say he predated then a children.

Well how does that stack up against a convicted sex offender and friend of paedophiles becoming US president ?

MonteStory · 14/09/2026 16:51

I don’t think the OP voted for him. I certainly didn’t. I like to think in this country someone who said “they’ll let you do anything in your famous” and “if she wasn’t my daughter…” weeks before the election, would never have come to power.

As as I’m concerned Andrew, Trump and the rest are ‘cancelled’ and I do not give them a second of my time in the same way I turn off the radio if Jackson comes on.

That's the point though, nobody on this thread will ever know the truth.

Imisssleep88 · 14/09/2026 19:12

He was found not guilty. He was a bit odd, but I think that's because of how his dad brought him up tbh, he had issues mentally, but personally think he was harmless, just had his childhood stolen and it effected him mentally, like he was trying to relive childhood. He is dead, he made fantastic music and I hope they play it for many years to come

BogRollBOGOF · 14/09/2026 19:37

I think MJ being in the public eye from childhood is relevant. He was extremely famous before he had the opportunity for at what was at best deeply inappropriate relationships, so there is a point where he was innocent.

The court cases muddy the water because some people accept the not guilty outcomes.

I think the fairest thing to say is that money corrupted the course of justice. Over time, learning more about safeguarding, I've been more inclined to believe that he was an accomplished groomer and abuser and more likely to have been guilty than not.

Play of his music declined in the 2000s until his death. Many feel that as he can no longer benefit from royalties, that there's little benefit to cancelling him now.

MJ's music remains influential and culturally relevant. If it wasn't, then it wouldn't have been commercially viable to create a revival with the film (money talks again). Gary Glitter's music did not have that level of influence and longevity. Cancelling Saville only really means editing him out of vintage Top of the Pops footage; Jim'll Fix It was never even going to make re-runs on BBC4.

I don't turn MJ's music off, but I don't seek it out either. I didn't want to see the film because that's too much about the artist. When my students ask if I like MJ, I tend to say that I like the music but not the person.

People that are sucessfully "cancelled" tend to be of limited influence or longevity in their works. There's never going to be consensus about a point at which someone should be cancelled e.g. someone upthread lumping JK Rowling in with rapists because they don't like her views.

autumnisherenow · 14/09/2026 20:22

When I have watched the Thriller video as an adult, I just find the storyline so dark. A woman being terrorised by her boyfriend, who has turned into some sort of ghoul, accompanied by a load of other monstrous ghouls. The poor female making a run for her house, getting inside, and then these creatures breaking through the windows, doors etc. Also the isolated location, late at night, surrounded by a load of vegetation, with mist swirling around. It’s the sort of thing a murderous psychopath might fantasise about doing to a woman, yet amazingly, when you read the YouTube comments, everyone is singing MJ’s praises for his great opus, no one questions the psychology behind this creation.
I just find it deeply distasteful.
