AIBU to question why crypto investors are heavily funding Reform?

BermudaRhombus · 12/09/2026 08:42

To wonder why cryptocurrency investors are donating so much money to Reform. This follows the announcement of a £36m donation from another cryptocurrency billionaire (a record donation for a UK political party). It means that by far the majority of their funding comes from crypto investors.

Having read a bit more, I see that the new donations Act will be retrospective and may force Reform to return the donations. Harborne’s in particular is considered high risk because he does not want to be caught by UK tax liabilities.

Retrospective legislation. What could possibly go wrong? But of course parliament is supreme, when it wants to be.

Tbh I think everyone deep down is troubled by these donations, but I can understand why Reform voters will try to defend it. It reminds me of struggling football clubs that have been taken over by foreign oligarchs and suddenly are awash with money. Most fans know it’s not right, but they’re too desperate to win to complain about it.

Its not just "Reform voters" that defend it. Im a Conservative voter. I just don't want Labour (or any party) to gerrymander any election. We aren't Trump World here yet.

Itsnouse · 13/09/2026 13:39

Not the level of detail you were asking for but if you want to put the Reform donations in context you will see how far they dwarf anything received by other political parties.

Look at the period they are for...🤣

You absolutely cannot compare union support, which is made up of small donations from ordinary working people, with such large donations from private individuals with no checks or scrutiny whose massive personal wealth inevitably puts them apart from the experiences and interests of most of society.

Of course not, it isn"t like a Union would organise fake counter protests or anything is it?

So you are happy with an ex mayor who failed to become Labour leader twice being parachuted in because the last leader was woeful?

donations of this scale have never been received by other parties. We’ve never seen anything like it in the uk. It’s not even comparable!

Yes, which is why Labour are suddenly squealing about legislation, LOL, they are complete muppets, if they received this there would have been a bank holiday and another cut to bus fares. The ironic part is that loads of people who were happy to be ruled by unelected EU officials are now pretending that some crapto guy who lives overseas is going to take over the country.

This legislation has been in process for a long time and predates these sudden massive donations.

"In process", not a sudden national emergency just because it benefits Farage, they were probably giving themselves time to delete evidence of their own dodgy money.

I also think you’re naive if you think that these two donors won’t be shaping policy if Reform won an election. No one gives this much money and doesn’t expect a seat at the table. Nigel will be doing their bidding.

Yes but the cap was rejected by the unions and Labour dropped it as a idea.

The current legislation that has been in process doesn’t cover the two latest donations, they’re residents in the U.K.

Can you explain what you think they will be doing? I am genuinely interested because I don"t think anyone on any of the threads has a coherent answer, and could it be any worse than what bankers and elites are already doing? The biggest con ever perpetrated on the UK public has already happened, it was called the Housing Bubble and it was specifically designed so that bankers could live in the style they deserve, what are these crapto guys going to pull that could be worse than that con and all the offshore money etc. that is happening right now, and why were some people happy to be ruled by unelected figures in the EU but don"t want some tech Bro to support his chosen party?

Excellent, so Labour have basically blown hot air up their own backside yet again?

They might still try, they’re scrambling. But it’s not currently in the legislation.

Ah, you’re the poster who’s completely obsessed with house prices and the housing “bubble”. I remember now!

Every move they make is another few hundred votes for Reform, people have not forgotten the sickening scramble to overthrow the Brexit vote, one of the most disgusting episodes in UK politics IMO.

Any sensible person should be obsessed with how they were conned into massive debt by self-serving bankers and a compliant media.

I wasn’t conned into anything! But I’m guessing you missed out and understand why you’d be bitter about it. Reform aren’t going to solve your problems.

The problem of the property bubble is going to be solved by the bond market.

BermudaRhombus · 13/09/2026 15:59

You’d be better off on the house price crash forum. They’ve been spouting this stuff for decades. Prices go up and prices go down. Those of us who bought cheaply after the ‘08 crash benefited from 15 years of historically low interest rates and massive price increases. Even if the market collapsed we will still have made a decent profit. Others will lose out. That’s the property market for you.

Exactly.

The Conservatives have raised £150million since 2021, Labour £128 million and Reform £38million before these donations.
