And when (or did you ever) did you come to your senses?

OP posts:
BibbityBoppityTwo · 12/09/2026 03:08

Did it constantly through my teens and twenties. My friends would joke that they could take me to parties where I knew no one and I would manage to immediately home in on the most fucked up guy there.

As for how it was, it was always a wild ride. Never a dull moment. But after a while the endless drama does become a bit dull.

You grow out of it when you finally get exhausted by the chaos and bullshit and decide you want some peace in your life. What it takes to hit that point is different for everyone.

No.

ChristophersRobins · 12/09/2026 05:09

He nearly killed me twice. Not a great idea.

SomethingNewish · 12/09/2026 05:12

Why are you asking OP?

CharityShopMensGlasses · 12/09/2026 05:15

Briefly..
...he tried to manipulate me into paying off his cocaine debts..
He loved to watch thst series 50cent made about drug gangs..
I didnt realise his life had echoes of that until I got to know him better.
Its not a good idea, everything is a commodity to be traded in those circles.
Though he did have the best voice Ive ever heard in my life.

FastFood · 12/09/2026 05:22

Once in secondary school, maybe for a whole summer, probably less than that. The hot guy of the school, so dark so mysterious. And also so pathetic.
I was never attracted to bad boys, I just wanted the attention and the ego-boost but I quickly went back to my puppy-eyed love interests.

MyRarePanda · 12/09/2026 05:45

My DS did

Mydogisagentleman · 12/09/2026 05:48

Not only dated, co habited.
He bought our house with cash, bought me a sports car when I passed my test. Was k8nd and considerate and generous to a fault but boring.
I left when I found a gun pushed through the letterbox

double0seven · 12/09/2026 05:59

Many, many years ago. I would meet up with him at local pubs/ nightclubs by chance really. On one occasion he gave myself and my friend a lift home. He managed to crash the car into a central reservation and puncture the tyre. It was a fairly new car and he didn't know where the spare wheel was or how to change it. He wasn't too bothered either so we all got back in the car and he took my friend home. By the time we arrived at my home, (I had a room in a shared house) the tyre had completely gone and he was driving on the metal rim. He stayed the night and after he left the next morning I could hear the noise of the car for ages. Guessing the car was stolen.
On the odd occasions we agreed to meet and go out he always stood me up. When I did see him he would sometimes have a black eye or an arm in plaster or cuts and bruises.
Thank God he didn't like me as much as I liked him.

One of my close friends did for a couple of years. He used and abused her both sexually and emotionally. He had various girlfriends at the same time. It was very toxic. Neither of them were straightforward people but he was a lot worse than she was.

5128gap · 12/09/2026 07:04

One or two. They tended not to be the sharpest tools in the shed. Suggestible and easily influenced with annoying friends. Stuck out like a sore thumb when out of their own circle, and embarrassing because it was obvious people thought they were a massive twat. I grew out of them pretty quickly.

What a pointless answer

ChaToilLeam · 12/09/2026 07:44

"Bad boy" sounds exciting, "violent, criminal man" less so. The minute I knew a guy was dodgy, I ran a mile.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 12/09/2026 07:44

Yip. He'd been in prison for armed robbery, had a sex addiction and was bloody gorgeous. It was wild and exciting but also hugely fucked up. He was amazing in bed - the best I've had - and I'll definitely always remember him.

It was kind of long distance and it was pre- social media. He disappeared from my life quite mysteriously - I suspect he went back to prison. Or possibly died. I could write a book. But it would be one of those very dirty ones 🙈

IStillHearTheWaves · 12/09/2026 07:46

Fuck no.

Sartre · 12/09/2026 07:49

Pinned me up against a wall twice by my throat, once with a knife. Would remove lipstick with a baby wipe because he didn’t like me wearing it. Removed my phone when I turned up at his house and wouldn’t return it till I begged so I couldn’t leave. Bullied me mercilessly but would pretend it was a joke. Then when I dumped him, he stalked me for 6 months till he jumped and grabbed me in the street one day and I called the police.

Left me alone after that but last year found my work email after googling me and started emailing me. It’s been well over a decade. He wanted me to know the “adult” him and who he’d become apparently. Then started sending pics of books he was reading because I’m an American Lit lecturer. I blocked the email so they go to deleted now.

In short, not worth it.

crackofdoom · 12/09/2026 07:52

Yeah, had a fling with colossal muscle man who used to be a big time heroin dealer, then got clean. He had a lot of "interesting" anecdotes about spectacular male-on-male violence, especially in prison. Absolutely not my normal type, but the sex was amazing. I stopped seeing him because he spouted a load of manosphere nonsense. I still miss the sex though.

ShutteredUp · 12/09/2026 07:54

No. I knew lots of them because of where I grew up, but there’s nothing appealing about violent criminals. Calling them ‘bad boys’ just makes them sound like misbehaving primary school kids.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 12/09/2026 07:58

Yes. He was much older than me. I had no contact with my family at the time, I was perfect for him- because he turned out to be a pimp and he trafficked me for years in my 20s. So as well as being a massively abusive bully who threatened to find and hurt my family and friends if I didn't do what he said, he sold me to be raped by thousands of men. And when I was too old (30) he tried killing me with an iron bar to the head.

Ponoka7 · 12/09/2026 08:06

I've dated a real ex gangster. For the rest of their lives they'll only go to certain pubs/venues. They sit with their back to one wall, facing the door. If someone walked in and walked out, or suddenly went outside and was on their phone, we had to leave the area. There's always scores to be settled, they are always looking over their shoulder. He was exceptionally charismatic and sex was fantastic.

Was dating someone, he was so guarded, conversation was limited. He only drank milk, or nursed a coke, in the pub. He dropped off the radar, next thing he's on the news, on a 25 year stretch. I'm not going to lie, the splurging of cash was what I needed at the time.
I've mixed in those circles.
Is there something in particular that you want to know?

What a pointless answer

It's not pointless at all. The poster is quite rightly suspicious as to why the OP is asking the question.

TruffleSlinky · 12/09/2026 08:14

I wouldn't call him a "gangster", but when I was a teenager I went out with a boy who took a lot of drugs and had slept with a lot of girls. He was always nice to me though and I look back on him fondly.

Yes, an OP who’s in put quite the groundwork over the last seven days. I smell a lazy journalist.

ThatshallotBaby · 12/09/2026 08:31

Yes sadly. He abandoned me when I was 5 months pregnant with dd and absconded to Spain. She’s 24 now and has never met him, THANK GOD. He was a lowlife.

cloudbabies · 12/09/2026 08:32

My first proper boyfriend, I was 16 he was 20, he sold weed for the local dealer. One day he was in the shit with him for something and tried to make me go in his house to pick up his stuff to sell that week, luckily I wasn’t stupid enough to agree. This dealer actually knocked on my door one day trying to find him, which was a bit scary! You never normally saw him, only his runners.
