It’s not indifference and I find the people saying ‘Oh well humans are awful we might as well die’ are either trolls or sociopaths. This is Mumsnet, most people have children, for posters saying the stuff above, do you get a kick out of it? Do you find the idea of your children, your friends children, your grandchildren, all dying amusing do you?

For me, I haven’t engaged with this news because honestly it feels like everything is ending right now. Our government are about to launch a large scale campaign encouraging us to store food and emergency supplies, El Niño is erasing beaches and causing mass flooding in Texas with the worst of the weather still to come. We’re being warned we won’t have enough food due to the weather over the summer meaning our crop yields are lower. Climate change and melting glaciers dominate the news.

Mentally, human beings can only deal with so much threat. It’s enough to make anyone feel like life is not worth living anymore. But then there’s my children, I can’t leave them.

And so I just carry on the best I can. I take care of the birds, try to grow things, try to make sure our home is a happy and calm place. I think like lots of people I feel helpless. And I cant
let myself fall into hopelessness too because then what’s the point it carrying on with life.

I agree with you re children. Not everyone has dc on here but if people do then the flippancy is just an internet post thing. No one would be flippant in reality.

Yes, a large proportion of the stuff we buy and use is damaging to the environment, which is why we should all think about need vs want every time we buy or use something. Making funny images is pretty frivolous, isn’t it?

AI is definitely very worrying, but I actually think the Grey Goo Problem is far more terrifying tbh. Utterly terrifying in fact.

Only the robotic milking parlours and say nav controlled drills, sprays, fertilisers….
Things CAN still be done without tech - maybe not as efficiently (although depends on your viewpoint)
There are still some farmers - who people laugh at- with a 4 furrow plough and a small tractor that didn’t cost the price if a family home, with a milking parlour they have to wash down with a hose and cows they have to milk. Biggest problem is no one wants to work that hard anymore for the small wages farmers want to pay so factory farms, with robot scrapers, feeders and milkers where cows are never allowed outside to graze are increasing.

If AI was really so intelligent it could kill us in 3 years, it would also be smart enough to know that by doing so, it would be "killing" itself, which it's generally not very keen on. AI would need robots capable of making manual repairs to both everything AI needs to work, and themselves. Robots with that level of capability are way off. Have you seen the cleaning robot that struggles to close a dishwasher?

Humans have been trying to wipe ourselves out for years, I'm sure one day we'll succeed but I think its more likely to be from nuclear war than AI in the next 3 years.

I should add though, I do think it needs tighter controls and restrictions, we are sleep walking, yet again, into another nightmare.

To be fair, I don’t need to be posting on MN. But discussing serious real world issues and how we deal with them feels less frivolous than making silly pictures. Not all will agree, I realise.

Two companies say they are on the cusp of superintelligence. The same companies that have been saying for years that they are on the cusp of making AI profitable, yet still need hundreds of millions of pounds from Google, Microsoft, AWS, etc to continue operating.

Both of these companies are vague and defensive when asked to prove any of their claims.

An individual’s estimation of p(doom) has far more to do with their personality (and what they can gain from it, in some cases) than their technical knowledge. There are plenty of brilliant AI folk who see it neither as salvation nor death.

Amodei and also Altman to some extent have enormous incentive to hype the dangers of AI, it’s part of their marketing about how important and clever their products are. They’re both looking for massive investment right now.

Just because they quit doesn’t mean they won’t become a millionaire when the ipo happens. They’ll have already vested plenty. Lots of people have applied a strategy of working a few years each at a couple of the big tech firms, a few years at start ups, getting a diverse portfolio. Making big claims on Twitter is hardly damaging the personal brand, either. Not to suggest they don’t believe what they’re saying but I don’t think there’s the element of self sacrifice you’re reading into it.

Interestingly, because so much of the training material for LLMs comes from the Internet, it’s easy to argue that the more we talk about rogue killer AI the more likely it is to happen.
