The Government needs to do something

What is with this "there's nothing I can do about it" attitude from everyone? Is this how much we have all been worn down and suppressed or does it just simply come down to burying your heads in the sand and laziness? A lot of us here have children that we want to see alive in the next ten years. We have strength in numbers and I think we forget that. We shouldn't just role over and shrug our shoulders just because it feels out our hands. We need to try and do something, if not for ourselves then for our children and grandchildren.

I suppose it depends on how you interpret "could AI kill us?" AI is not advanced enough to do anything other than what it is programmed to do.

Could humans use AI to kill us? Yes, absolutely; however, humans could also use AI to stop AI, if you see what I mean?

Say Russia decided to use AI to shut off our power, as they did in Ukraine. They can't shut down the entire grid; they can only target one at a time because they're isolated from each other.

We can take that grid offline to prevent the rogue code from escaping, and we can use our own expertise or our own AI to remove the rogue code. It would cause short-term chaos; it wouldn't kill off the entire human race.

On the other thread I got called a flat earther because I am worried and believe we have to demand regulation.

I do agree we should be focusing and pushing more on the bigger threats. The Russian bots online very much want us to focus on bickering over stopping the boats and benefits whilst ignoring our need for more independent safer tech, closer relationship with the EU etc.

Tbh I for one am not bothered about any of it. If the world is going to end it will.
I live day to day and will continue to do so. I don't panic, worry and I don't care.

It's humans, presumably with kids and grandkids who have started this shit with creating AI and pushing for it to be bigger and better.

So many people on these threads saying we should do "something". Would anyone like to say what that "something" should be and how it will actually protect us?

I fixed the leak in my kitchen yesterday and my local team won away. AI told me how to fix the leak, yay for AI.

OP, what do you expect the UK Government to actually do? We are one piddly little fish in a fuck off huge ocean, with absolutely sod all influence over anything on the global stage, let alone this.

For the right things to happen we'd need Trump, Putin, Xi and all their tech billionaire mates to be on the same page and working together. I don't think I'm being defeatist to think that's just not going to happen pretty much ever.

Do you honestly think any of that lot are going to pay the slightest bit of attention to Andy Burnham or some petitions from the British public?

Brits are going to have to adjust their expectations. We no longer have an automatic right to a better standard of living than people in the emerging economies.

It doesn’t really matter what we here in the UK do, or the US, or the rest of Europe or North America, or much of Asia… there’s fuck all way the Chinese are gonna pass up the opportunity to be top of the pile when it comes to AI.

Climate change will finish us off long before AI reaches the capability to do it.

Absolutely. It’s also been shown very clearly over the past decade or so in people’s attitudes to the climate emergency. Unwilling to give up their Temu and Shein purchases, unwilling to give up their multiple flights a year while pointing at China and saying ‘it’s all their fault’. It’s just sheer stupidity and self-absorption.

Perhaps a farmer could chip in and tell us if they are able to plant a field of grain and harvest it successfully without American software? I'm guessing they can. You know drive tractor fertilise. Drive tractor plant seed. Drive tractor cut crop. But I'll wait for a farmer to confirm or deny.

Doubt the Government of any flavour will bother to do anything, until such time as their own cushy lifestyles are threatened. I think they're quite happy scaremongering and keeping us quiet, but then I'm a cynic.

Not naive, but, if you consider that you would have to go back more than seventy years to before AI (in its most basic form) was invented, you can see why it’s probably a bit too late now and have a better understanding of how entangled so much technology is with AI (including machine learning processes), too much is reliant upon it now and has been for some time, even if it wasn’t obvious to the end user. Not something that can just be gone back on.

@WaryCyanStork minimise your use of AI, spread awareness in your real life and online. Sign petitions, protest..... or do nothing because what is the point in life anyways. At least we will all get to enjoy a couple of "funny memes" before the extinction of humanity huh

A quick search will show you how reliant uk farmers are on computer tech from knowledge to equipment( all computer run), accessing materials, delivering etc. The list is endless.

Seems Terminator was in fact a prophecy!
