AIBU to think many people of the UK lack confidence in the current government?

AIBU to think that the majority of people in the UK don't have any confidence in the current government, with an unelected Prime Minister at its' helm?

Would people be willing to vote on a petition to have a parliamentary debate on this matter, to encourage this government to have a snap General Election? This would give the people - the tax payers - as say in who is running the country. Democracy in action, if you will.

AIBU - people are happy with Labour and the unelected PM

YANBU - people have a democratic right to vote for who they want to run the country and right now, the majority don't have confidence in the current government.

Totally not true

I can’t think of anything worse than a batshit right wing government right now. Focusing on ALL the wrong things, cutting services, jingoism of ‘small boat’ rhetoric. Just, ugh.

Neverstopwondering · 09/09/2026 12:33

Lack confidence is a slight understatement

LoyalMintOtter · 09/09/2026 12:46

@CoventryCity - still spreading the hate.

@CoventryCity on and on your going. Still yawning.

Well that is predictable. The north will have plenty of money thrown at it as he has wanged on about it since he took the job. He doesn’t shut up about Greater Manchester.

If only he gave a shit about the rest of the country (or even realised it existed). There are bankrupt councils all round the country who won’t be fit to be devolved.

But it leaves him free to concentrate on what matters to him most. I’m sure other places will be like yours and everyone up there will think he’s great.

If I said I agree and I don’t think he’s great would that surprise you? He’s going to get a caning if he doesn’t stat to look past the NW but he doesn’t because he’s a bee network one trick pony.

Trust me when I say I hate labour and socialism with a passion. We’re been drunk on it for up here for years and it’s got us nowhere. I equally can’t stand London and the south west. The country needs more great cities mist decent countries with out GDP have more.

What I saw on Monday was different

FrippEnos · 09/09/2026 13:04

Given that generally one third of the country don't vote at all, and of the two thrids that are left fewer than a half vote for the winning party.

The majority of people never trust the government no matter which party gets in.

Shinyandnew1 · 09/09/2026 13:19

Were you asking for petitions and a snap General Election when the Conservatives were changing Prime Ministers every five minutes? Or does the sudden concern about democracy only kick in when it’s a Labour government you don’t like?

LuckyHazelFox · 09/09/2026 13:25

I don't have faith in any Labour government, no matter who's leading it.

CoventryCity · 09/09/2026 15:03

LoyalMintOtter · 09/09/2026 12:46

@CoventryCity - still spreading the hate.

That's a personal attack. What 'hate' do you think I am 'spreading'? Do you mean I have a different opinion than you do? Do you mean I am calling Labour out for treating the electorate with contempt - but in explicably you think they're doing a good job? And you don't wike it? Thought so.

Maybe your petition should focus on this issue. You might have more luck in getting it signed.

I am sure such a petition would be signed (I've another thread about it somewhere). But how would that help get rid of them? It wouldn't.

Can we leave it out with the party political broadcasting? You've made your deeply unpleasant political leanings very clear. You can't browbeat people into agreeing with you.

What? Oh I see! So sweet - you mean you think differently and have different views. Well just say so, start a debate about what views you have. No need to attack others. I know it's the Labour MO to DARVO when they don't like an others' views, but really.

We DO have an elected Prime Minister. He was elected by his Party.
Under the constitution, the people vote for the party and the party votes for the PM, subject, in theory, to the King's approval.

EVERY Prime Minister is "unelected" if by that you mean he was not voted in by the electorate.

YABU.

I answered this point in a pp

@JenniElection i’m curious about this - was it a cross party thing?

I honestly think that if the parties put aside their differences and work together, we could be in such a different position.

scalt · 09/09/2026 15:14

I think many people lack confidence in UK government in general. I’ve largely distrusted government since the day that self-serving criminal Sir Tony fucking Bliar was elected, and Boris Johnson was the final nail in the coffin of me ever trusting government again.

As for now, the choice is between “bad” and “absolute hell”. At the moment, my thinking is “anything but Conservative or Reform/Restore”. I’m giving Burnham’s government the benefit of the doubt, as I did with Starmer’s. Burnham’s doing more to appear to be on the side of the people, as opposed to Johnson and Farage who outright say and lie “I’m a man of the people”.

The older I get (fifties now) the more I realise how little we are being told.

So much happens where we are not told the whole story or full picture and for a while this seemed to have kept everything in order.

Too much is going wrong now and there are too little resources in the UK (rats scrapping in a barrel)

Politicians, even the ones that start out with good intentions, quickly become disillusioned. It's tough to stand up to everyone and try to bring in change which is painful in the short term but necessary for the long term.

I think we have real problems now in the UK. For a long time we got rid of our manufacturing and became a service industry country. Now we appear to be losing that as well and the thought has crossed my mind the taking in immigrants is becoming our next 'industry'. I can't believe money is not changing hands for this. Perhaps it's some kind of political pressure/blackmail or perhaps someone is getting rich of it. A failing, struggling country with unemployed youngsters, crumbling public services and dire finances cannot seriously think taking in unskilled men with dodgy law abiding abilities will benefit the country. Unless of course something is happening that we are not being told about. Like the UK is practically bankrupt and we are getting paid to take them. I mean why not. Some third world countries get paid to take others toxic waste.

Our finances in the UK are in a bad way. We spend more than we raise and so we borrow each month. Bad enough but now the price we pay to borrow has risen quite alot. As our bonds fall due for repayment they will be refinanced at higher interest rates. So we already can't pay our bills without borrowing. Now we will borrow at higher rates (and repay the lower interest bonds) so without doing anything our outgoings will increase. The only way we are getting out of this trap is to reduce our debt and have our interest payments reduced by showing the market the country is taking tough steps to fix things. Until then markets will continue to price the UK as a country losing the plot.

This week our 3rd highest taxpayer announced his plans to leave the country. He pays hundreds of millions of pounds per year in tax.

I afraid we need to change pretty much everything. We need growth and investment because that is the only way in the longer term. In the meantime we need serious financial cuts to just about everything - welfare, triple lock, sen, the whole bloody lot.

Or we keep going until we combust.

Absolutely. Do you think allowing, to all intents and purposes, unfettered immigration helps? 20 million in 30 years and always rising, does affect our services and qol somewhat. And then we have the issue you mention - less tax going into the big bucket, as fewer high tax payers. We have more going out than coming in. Labour have made it much worse, and are continuing to do so. On top of which women and girls in the UK now have an increased safety risk compared to living in the UK , than we had 20 years ago. If we had the facts from Labour - on sex crimes by immigrants / asylum seekers, we could prove that. But they are blocking us receiving that information. It's a puzzle.

Of course. But Labour would never do that. I think Kemi offered to work with Labour but they declined.

I think Tony Blair is the only one I've had faith in - and optimism for. Didn't turn out well.

If we can get rid of Labour, and also get rid of Reform (who are fading away anyway), I have some hope for Kemi B.

YABU. I had zero confidence in our 14-year procession of Tory Prime Ministers. Not because four of them were “unelected”, but because their asset-stripping and suspect deals with their mates left our public services in an abysmal state that will take decades to fix (and that’s being optimistic).

I won’t be signing your petition. If you find yourself in a bad situation, the first rule is - don’t do anything hasty that will make it worse.

Dilemma999 · 09/09/2026 15:39

No, really glad to get rid of the Tories who pillaged the country lining the pockets of their rich mates only. Will take my chances with Labour thanks.

In that case why did Labour get rid of Starmer and install a chancer like Burnham?

Do you not mind women and girls being more at risk from sexual crime every day the UK brings in more undocumented unknown males from misogynistic cultures? Are you happy to 'take chances' on that?

Despite 14 years of Tory government? Boris Johnson? The revolving door of Tory Prime Ministers who were also “unelected” by your definition? Amazing how quickly the hypocrisy kicks in...
