AIBU to think many people of the UK lack confidence in the current government?

AIBU to think that the majority of people in the UK don't have any confidence in the current government, with an unelected Prime Minister at its' helm?

Would people be willing to vote on a petition to have a parliamentary debate on this matter, to encourage this government to have a snap General Election? This would give the people - the tax payers - as say in who is running the country. Democracy in action, if you will.

AIBU - people are happy with Labour and the unelected PM

YANBU - people have a democratic right to vote for who they want to run the country and right now, the majority don't have confidence in the current government.

Most British people probably lack full confidence in any government. Moaning abiout the government probably comes second to moaning about the weather in the list of perennial favourite British sports. And I think that's rather healthy!

But the complaint that the PM is 'unelected' misses the point. All PMs are unelected, except as MP. We don't have direct election of PMs.

I think at the moment, many people are probably a bit more confident in Burnham than they were in Starmer. But it's not part of the British character to worship a political leader.

Numbers haven't reduced.
'The latest data shows that around 38,000 people were detected arriving in the UK via unauthorised routes in the year ending June 2026. This is around three times the number detected in 2018.'
' Data for early September 2026 recorded 625 arrivals across 8 boats on September 6, and 143 arrivals across 2 boats on September 7. '

It could be this

Small Boat Crossings:In 2022, around 12,700 Albanian nationals arrived in the UK via small boats, making up 27% of all crossings that year. By 2023, the UK Home Office reported that Albanian small boat arrivals had fallen by roughly 90%.1, 2]

Also the Rwanda Plan, That Starmer scrapped.

First of all, how about you address this false claim?
Number of arrivals (as in people) has not decreased. In fact it's at the highest point since 2018

No it's not a 'false claim' - it's in my post further up thread. The data is from the government.

Do you know why there was a very significant drop in 2023? And then a significant rise in 2024?

What? Not sure where you got that gem from.

Read your own thread and you will see I have admitted to expressing myself inadequately, providing a fuller explanation.

Over the years (but without the July and August figures).

The last twelve months' arrivals are significantly lower than previous years

@CoventryCity is labouring under the delusion that reading a leaflet will halt rape. It won't. Changing behaviour is difficult and requires a range of interventions before things start to change.

What? Not sure where you got that gem from.

I'm guessing you vote Tory and you didn't mind them being completely incompetent and corrupt.
I bet you didn't complain when May, Johnson and Truss became PM without an GE.

I've never voted Conservative in my life. I will next time.

Stop getting your news from SM. Fact check EVERYTHING and let’s just see shall we. Yet another election is the last thing we need and the Russia would love it. We need a stable period now.

I don't, stop projecting.. Are you saying these are lies? Please clarify.

I agree. So Labour saying boats have decreased, as they do sometimes, is pointless. Thank you for agreeing with me. And see the stats I posted above. Number of arrivals (as in people) has not decreased. In fact it's at the highest point since 2018. Stats above. (FFS)

Migration watch statistics.

Apx 29,000 people arrived on boats between January and August 2025

Apx 16,000 people arrived on boats between January and August in 2026

They are ok, they are trying to do a lot for the general public with very little resources.

Preferable to Putin puppets, rich boy tax elitists and grifters.

Don't mind the Lib Dems either but I couldn't tell you what the greens stand for, are they with the great unwashed stop oil oddballs?

The Greens don't know either. I have asked them when they have canvassed for local elections eg 'How do you resolve the apparent dichotomy of the party's Muslim and trans activist groupings?' 'I have watched the party suspend an able female parliamentary candidate indefinitely before eventually deselecting her for stating her view in 2022 that sex is biological. Where is the space for me in your party, a woman who believes sex is biological.' 'Is the climate crisis still the driving issue for the Greens?' 'When Palestine is the defining issue, what room is there for local democracy?' The canvassers looked stricken and gave no reply.

Changes in culture, education and parenting typically follow law though. Charges in attitudes follow forced changes in behaviour.
As a teen I was subjected to appalling sexism from my boss and customers, including groping. With tighter laws, today this would be less prevalent and most men would at least claim to think it was wrong.
The men who did it aren't all dead yet. They're white British sexual assailants who probably don't sexually assault on the daily anymore. Because of laws. No reason to think that men from abroad who would do it if they could won't moderate when they're told they can't.

That comes back to the effectiveness of a leaflet in telling them.

As for culture, education and laws it’s all an evolving mix and women have done the hard yards to get into power, get votes, lead institutions and so on. Even post on forums. I’ll have all that over other set ups for sure.

You mention laws here and I agree they inform behaviour, so does culture, education and parenting. A leaflet is scant.

When you visit a different country it’s normal to be informed of their laws - such as Brits visiting the UAE.

I work with separated children and have done for over 10 years - working 1-1 and with 15-21 year olds - never felt threatened or disrespected as a female. The only males I have worked with with warning markers for lone visits have been British.

Do I think all male, British young men are a risk from that experience - no. Do I think male asylum seekers never commit offences against women - no

I just don’t see one group as any more of a threat than the other.

This.

The racist hyperbole is designed to divide us and the reason for it is to make the rich and powerful more rich and powerful and to destabilise us so that we are vulnerable as a country.

IdaGlossop · 10/09/2026 13:56

EasternStandard · 10/09/2026 13:41

Mine is that reading the leaflet would make no difference and it’s mocking Labour / anyone who thinks it will.

So our readings are the same. I have expressed myself inadequately when talking about the OP's delusion. That post means 'If anyone thinks rape can be stopped by reading a leaflet, they are wrong. OP is pretending she thinks it can, to mock others. However, few people would think a leaflet could stop rape. Reasonable people would think the leaflet could give readers pause for thought and that a variety of measures are needed to make an impact.'

Fortheloveoffrogs · 10/09/2026 13:54

CoventryCity · 09/09/2026 20:35

Does it not bother you that Labour are

planning not to house asylum seekers near schools and nurseries? Why

suppressing data on sex crimes. Why

feeling the need to hand out leaflets telling asylum seekers not to rape the locals? Why

All of the above - is true.
