To call in sick?

I’m on my first day back at work after 10 days annual leave.

I was walking down the road this morning when I rolled my ankle and fell, I have horrific grazes on my knee and elbow, and my ankle is swelling up hugely and is painful even at rest.

AIBU to turn up, explain what’s happened and go home? When I’m cleaned up I could probably work but I’m in so much pain at the moment I feel sick, I have two fresh grazes that are about to bleed through my clothes and I don’t know whether the adrenaline carried me to the bus or if I can walk.

I find it odd they have sent you home with nothing on your foot/leg. At the minimum you need a fracture boot?? I had a cast for 4 weeks and a boot for a further 2. And an appointment with the fracture clinic after 2 weeks for another x-ray to check it was healing stable.

Apparently not for an avulsion fracture. They’re fairly stable and not risky from what I’ve read

Might be worth asking for a dexa scan if you're peri/menopausal and it fractured just by rolling over on it. DH broke his wrist and it turned out he has osteoporosis (in his case caused my medication). It's common in women especially if you're not on HRT

I’m not menopausal - this is a fairly common type of fracture, it’s specifically from a sprain where a small chip of bone comes off.

Sounds like a grade 1 or 2 sprain

RICE, ibuprofen and time

postpone the hike

Ankle sprains are no joke and speaking from experience, without proper rest, the injury just persists with painful flareups that cause sudden inability to place weight on it - even months after.

Unless there is a backstory, your manager is an empathy-deficient tosser - his comment indicates that purely from a financial perspective, continuing in on your first day back was the logical short-term choice to prove to them you were not winging it.. but don't ruin your ankle sanity working for gobshites in the long-term

Rowgtfc72 · 09/09/2026 18:30

Pleased you went to a and e, sorry to hear its fractured.
Can i ask, was it really obvious it was fractured on the xray?
Dh rolled his ankle at work four weeks ago and is still in lots of pain. His didn't swell and bruise like yours but it went right over( sciatica, numb leg, didn't feel the ankle go).
He's had an x ray and been told there's nothing showing but dh is one of those blokes that ignores pain and is obviously struggling.

Personally if i were you I'd take the rest of the week off to let the initial swelling go down and reassess for Monday. You'll be more sore tomorrow.

My sister had an airboot and my DD did the same and had a cast.

Uppitymuppity · 09/09/2026 18:48

Wow I've not read most of the replies, just the the few and there's lots of heartless arses about! I hope you went home op and tool care of yourself, you only have one body/health. I know from personal experience that a sprained ankle can be just as painful as a broken one and needs elevation, possible killers and ice which would be very difficult to do at work! If it's still swollen I'd get it checked at a&e for a break if you've not already, hope you're feeling better by tomorrow op.

AppleKatie · 09/09/2026 18:56

I had an avulsion fracture about 8 weeks ago. The hospital did give me a boot but said it was ‘optional’ and to weight bear as much as I could for as long as I could- best way to get blood to it for healing apparently.

I wore the boot most of the time for a week and then on and off for another week. Didn’t drive for two weeks (it was right ankle).

I had no follow up either so that bit doesn’t surprise me.

i chatgpt’d myself a physio plan which has actually been really helpful.

day-day I’m ok now 8 weeks on but I still can’t hike for more than an hour at a very slow pace.

Carodebalo · 09/09/2026 19:03

What a day you’ve had! I would really try to rest as much as possible, don’t underestimate it and think it’s ’just’ a small fracture. The day after is usually the worst … if the pain is really bad tomorrow I’d call in sick or say you can work - but only from your sofa. By Friday it’ll hopefully be a bit better and in the weekend you can put your foot up again. I think you’ve handled the whole situation really well OP, I hope you’ll feel better very soon!

ruethewhirl · 09/09/2026 19:05

Reading some of the nastier replies on this thread I bet certain posters are behind a few of the 'You can't go to A&E just because your leg's hanging off OP, bung an Elastoplast on it and get a grip' type posts often seen around MN... 🙄

Well I’ve never been seen that quickly in all my life! I arrived at 2, I’ve been x-rayed and discharged. I’ve got a very small fracture and need to rest for 4 weeks

I bet you're glad you went now!

Hope it soon mends, OP.

Don't be ridiculous! Absence levels are much higher for women than men. Men certainly wouldn't call in sick because they tripped! They'd be way too embarrassed.

No, they just ring in sick because they threw up in the night or they have a cold. I have to admit, they do go way over the top with the "poorly voice". I had many such "poorly voices" ring in sick when the world cup was on, funny that...

I don’t think so!

it’s gone a very impressive colour tonight 😬

That alone sounds bloody painful.

Did they advise keeping it elevated?

I’ll get a lift if needs be. But I drive automatic

Or you could go on the bus again.

I love it when the Mumsnet work nazis get on here. Eyeball hanging off on a stalk? You can still work. I bet they haven’t got jobs themselves.

Half of them have never worked.

Ewock · 09/09/2026 19:24

I had that i jury a few years back. They gave me a boot which I had to wear constantly for 2 weeks. Then cut it down. I then had physio to rebuild strength.

I don’t fancy trying the hill again, not while using crutches!

Thank you. I think the adrenaline has fully worn off now as I’m aching all over. My arms feel all funny and the knee with the graze is agony.

Hmm as a medical professional I’d suggest if you can’t work from home I’d suggest some time off especially as you will probably be in a lot of pain and your manager doesn’t sound sympathetic

lazyarse123 · 09/09/2026 17:12

Don't know about you but I read and type with my fingers not my feet.

The typing part isn't the issue here, it's getting to and from the office. OP will need to walk to the bus stop and wait there standing. Get on the bus with no guarantee of a seat and possible lurching. Then walk from the bus to her office at the other end. Not all jobs allow working from home at will, or even have the equipment for it e.g. desktops not laptops.

Then there's the interesting question of sitting with her leg up at least part of the time as advised by the doctor. They don't mean 2 inches off the floor, they mean a significant amount and ideally at least as high as whatever you are sitting on. The less you keep your leg up, the greater the swelling and attendant pain. Plus it's unlikely her office has a decent freezer there that she can put ice packs in.

See some of the other posts above regarding the same injury taking much longer than anticipated to heal when it wasn't looked after as suggested, including some where the after effects have lasted for years.

Take a pic of the offending appendage and send it to your boss.🦶🏻

Tell them it's more painful than it looks and you can barely walk - which isn't a lie, is it?

Get a GP appt and a note from them to sign you off for a wk or so.

Ooh it's called an avulsion fracture is it. I had the same thing happen to me, rolled my ankle, swole and hurt like a bitch but I couldn't rest it at all so it hurt for like a year in the end and I had limited mobility. I eventually saw a doctor and he said I'd probably chipped the bone but they wouldn't have done anything for it anyway except rest.

So yeah. Be sure to actually rest it.

JeanSimmons · 09/09/2026 19:33

Of course you shouldn't go to work! Ignore all the assholes saying you need to. What rubbish. Go home and rest up.

LilacBalloons · 09/09/2026 19:36

Hoardasurass · 09/09/2026 08:00

A sprained ankle and skint knee is not a reason to skip work unless you work in a job that involves you being on your feet all day.
If you work in an office you are being absolutely ridiculous, take a couple of ibuprofen and ice your ankle at work and if needed im sure you can get a couple of plasters for your knee from the 1st aid box

What an unbelievably stupid post.

I sprained my ankle a couple of years ago and there is no way I could have gone to work on the day it happened. After the initial adrenaline wore off it was completely non weight bearing, I needed help to get to the loo etc, and it was distractingly painful. I couldn't have concentrated on my job at all.

After a day or two it was considerably better (it happened on a Saturday and I was able to go to work on the Monday) but I could not have worked on the day it happened.

Ilovemyfam · 09/09/2026 19:36

Absolutely agree that you cannot be moving around. Even when you have a desk job you are often not glued to your seat. It is unfair that you have just been on leave but it happened.
