It can feel difficult, and for people who have limited interaction with women in burqa I get it, it can feel odd. No doubt it is a limiting factor to integration in the lives of those women. However, if you ever do interact with them you will find its perfectly possible to talk to them and understand what they’re saying. I prefer to see people faces but I respect their choice not to show them. It’s entirely different to covering one’s face to hide one’s identity and the people who’ve compared them know that.

Our custom is to allow people to practise their religion freely. We allow women to cover their hair or face because of that custom. It would be a requirement for women to cover hair in some countries because they don’t allow freedom of expression. That’s not their custom. I don’t wish to change England for a country that doesn’t tolerate legally acceptable difference, whether that’s preventing or forcing people from observing their own custom.

Because I can tell the difference between a man and a woman. Can’t you?

There have been - and from the images, they’re very obviously men. Burqa is pretty uncommon in England, more women (and still
hardly any) wear niqab and you can very easily see they are women.

If it OK for Muslim women to completely obscure their identity I find it hypocritical to be outraged when other people feel the need do it.

I've made no comment on my feelings about the burqa either way, so don't attribute views to me just because you're more comfortable arguing with those than what I've actually said.
I said I have never met a fighting age man in a burqa. You have tried to persuade me that I wouldn't realise if the women I have encountered in burqa were in fact men. Which is telling me that I can't correctly identify the sex of other people if they are wearing certain clothing and I can't see their face.

Sure it’s more common in places where Muslim women live. It’s still uncommon amongst the 60m people who live here, 95% of whom are not Muslim, and even among those who are.

Muslim women are not hiding their identity by covering their faces. Just as a courier delivering parcels or a person wearing a filtration mask on a building site isn’t hiding his identity. But I’d agree that if several hundred women in burqa, or cycling snoods, or any other kind of face covering were massed and stopped traffic at a port that should be stopped, because in that context it’s intimidating.

Protesting this issue didn’t get any of them arrested, did it? Just like saying Christmas or hanging a St George flag or buying Easter eggs doesn’t get anyone arrested.
