To feel i didn't do anything wrong??

I have a very good friend or so i thought, for over 30 years.
Recently we arranged a little break together, i booked and paid for an experience for us to do and she booked and paid for accommodation, (slightly unwillingly).
Then I suggested something else I'd like to do, but she was vehement that wasn't going to happen, I was upset and annoyed at her attitude but thought ok, I'll do that another time.
She paid me her half of the experience.
I asked to meet up to discuss our disagreement and moving forward.
She ignored me, and stopped texting me, so I left it a week and tried again thinking I'll be the bigger person.
Another refusal to meet up and it was now getting really close to our break.
So i texted, I assume you've cancelled the accommodation and she didn't answer me.
At that point I decided I wasn't going anyway, so I canceled the experience.

Her next text told me that she hadn't cancelled the accommodation and was going to use it for herself and husband!!
She also wanted me to uncancel the experience so she could do that too.

I am stunned at her actions and a little bamboozled as to what's actually caused her to act this way.

Can anyone see what I might have done to upset her?? She also suggested we meet up in a couple of weeks time!!

The other thing involved a celebrity she doesn't like, so I thought ok fair enough, but I was really annoyed at the way she voiced her opinion, it was just a no.... at that point I thought we should meet up and have a chat but she ignore that request, so I decided not to send my half of the accommodation until we'd discussed it as at that point I wasn't sure i wanted to go away with her, she'd been a little awkward recently.
I also wanted to discuss it so she could cancel the accommodation if we decided not to go. And I could cancel the painting, by the time I did i lost half the money!

" but I was really annoyed at the way she voiced her opinion, it was just a no.... "

She said no but you didnt hear it i would say she finds it hard to say no to you as you dont hear her and shes had enough , you dont need to meet up to discuss her no, her no is her no, its not your right to talk her round

Pessismistic · 05/09/2026 17:25

Hi op I would say you tried to sort out the issue but she acted like a child I wouldn’t have cancelled the experience seeing as she did pay you her half. Only you can decide if the friendship is worth saving but don’t go away together anymore because you’re not compatible if she wants to control everything it’s not exactly a break for both of you. Compromise is necessary.

Um sometimes people start to go a bit weird when they get older and ppl you thought were good friends begin to act in odd ways. If you patch it ip, all well and good, but if she continues to react strangely from time to time then maybe she's starting to have odd behaviour. I had a 30+ year friendship where the woman auddenly started to withdraw and make no effort out of the blue. And I hadnt done anything wrong at all. Ppl can be weird.

FreyaW · 05/09/2026 17:51

Yeah. You didn't pay your half for accommodation.

Seajaye · 06/09/2026 07:16

I find the post muddled. You say you go away together every year yet don't seem to sort out the costs the type of break/activities in advance. I would think this is what's bothering her.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 06/09/2026 08:15

I find it strange - or perhaps an ‘only on Mumsnet’ thing - that somehow, for some posters, this must be due to a controlling spouse 🤷‍♀️

Packofsix · 06/09/2026 08:47

So basically you had a hissy fit because she didn’t want to do something that you wanted to do. And she (rightly) is very peeved about that. Friends don’t always like to do the same things and that is ok. There are things a friend of mine likes to do (clubbing) that I won’t do in a million years and she knows when to stop pushing or we will fall out

So she said ‘no’ which is a whole word. And you knew she doesn’t like the person. And yet you continued to push. Then had a strop and didn’t pay her your half of the accommodation. I wouldn’t go away with you either

A bit weird because she didn’t want to go and discuss why she didn’t want to do a second activity with the OP related to a celebrity she didn’t like?

It's not "odd" or "weird" to not want to do a certain activity with a friend.

What on earth are you going on about?

The only person acting weirdly here is the OP who hasn't paid for her half of the accommodation

LittleBearPad · 06/09/2026 10:01

You seem to have been the one one to have a strop OP.

You didn’t pay your share, you unilaterally cancelled the painting. I don’t blame her for going with her husband.

Stircrayz · 06/09/2026 10:14

Ihateknowingthis · 05/09/2026 11:56

  1. Because she likes to be in charge.
  1. I was thinking that we should meet up to discuss out relationship, not the fact that she said no to the second activity. I thought if we met up and decided not to go she could cancel the accommodation straight away. If we had met up and sorted our issues I would have paid straight away, I always pay my half.

Things have been a little strained between us for a while.
We both agreed to the experience and the accommodation.

Payng for the accommodation is definitely not the reason for all this.

And as a pp noticed, I was still awake at 3am and up late and busy reading through all these posts and learning how most of you were berating me for not paying for the accommodation when I know that's not what happened.

So strained relationship and her not wanting to communicate with me, then telling me she is going with her husband with no thought or decency to actually discuss all beforehand.

Im perplexed about the whole situation and hurt....

I think it's weird that you're so sure it's not about the money?

You booked an experience and she paid her half immediately. So you really think it's not about the money? I feel she's sending you a message by paying straight away. You're completely disregarding 90% of the messages here. Are you really looking for advice or just confirmation she's in the wrong?

Shinyandnew1 · 06/09/2026 10:14

Hoardasurass · 05/09/2026 15:21

@Ihateknowingthis have you refunded her half of the activity that she paid you for and you've cancelled yet?

This!

Your communication style on here seems to be exactly how you communicate with her. Poorly, I think you need to unpick this.

Maybe you need to read what I've actually written!
I've never said she paid straight away because she didn't and I didn't ask her to, we usually pay ourselves whatever needs paying, then straighten up after the holiday, that's why I know my not paying straight away is not the issue.

Suszieq · 06/09/2026 11:37

Just give her what you owe her. I can see why there’s resentment here. You had to have a convo with her before you sent the money. YOU had to. The convo didn’t happen and you still haven’t given her the money? Like what on earth

Also who is the celebrity and what is the celeb experience? Dying to know.

Moonnstarz · 06/09/2026 11:46

Maybe her financial circumstances have changed. She had paid for her half of an activity and for all of the accommodation.
You then demand a meeting after she doesn't want to do an activity with a celeb you know she doesn't like. It was fine to ask, but then I don't understand why you couldn't take no for an answer.
Perhaps a meeting should have happened initially where you booked everything today, with one of you doing all the booking and the other instantly transfering money at the time.

rainbowstardrops · 06/09/2026 12:00

If she’s been off with you lately and has now decided to go away with her husband instead, I’d be pretty sure that you’ve been pissing her off in some way.
I’d like to hear her side of this story.

I believe her friend didn't pay for her half of the experience straightaway, but did stump up for all of the accommodation.

OP. Did you express your upset and annoyance??

If you could tell that she was willing to pay for the accommodation, why did you not offer to pay your half there and then??

That doesn’t even make sense, she paid before the holiday, and you deliberately withheld the money you owed. So this does not demonstrate that it’s not about the money

So why did you ‘decide not to pay her’ until she had bowed to your demand that she meet up with you to discuss the situation? If it wasn’t what you normally do then why was withholding the money even a thought in your mind?

I don’t think it’s that you didn’t pay, it’s that your posts made it sound like you were thinking about your attendance being conditional on her agreeing to the activity she didn’t want or, at least, being conciliatory about the fact she didn’t want to do something she didn’t want to do.

If that isn’t what you wanted to discuss it’s unclear why you were suddenly getting cold feet about the holiday. And while your communication to her might have been clearer and less sounding like you thought she had done something wrong, it might not have been. It sounds like you were both in a last straw mindset. Given what you have told us, I can see why suggesting you might want to cancel could have been hers.

Well I think based on the number of replies about the money aspect it would really help if you outlined the sums involved? If it's fifty quid then I agree it's not about the money.

This may well be a "straw that broke" situation for her.
From what I gathered reading your posts and updates, you knew she had laid out for accommodation, but was waiting for her to ask you for your share. I would find that frustrating too. I hate owing people money, so the minute I realise I need to pay my share, I go out of my way to do so. Your friend feeling like you're not an equal contributor to these kind of commitments can be really trying, and she may see you as being a CF.

Plus then you asking for an experience as part of the getaway (maybe asking or assuming her to contribute 50% towards that) that you knew she would have zero interest in, was probably the icing on the cake for her. If this kind of pattern has happened on and off for 30 years, she was probably fed up with it (although she should have really found a way to communicate this). Maybe some reflection about the general give and take in your relationship over the past years is due
