To feel i didn't do anything wrong??

I have a very good friend or so i thought, for over 30 years.
Recently we arranged a little break together, i booked and paid for an experience for us to do and she booked and paid for accommodation, (slightly unwillingly).
Then I suggested something else I'd like to do, but she was vehement that wasn't going to happen, I was upset and annoyed at her attitude but thought ok, I'll do that another time.
She paid me her half of the experience.
I asked to meet up to discuss our disagreement and moving forward.
She ignored me, and stopped texting me, so I left it a week and tried again thinking I'll be the bigger person.
Another refusal to meet up and it was now getting really close to our break.
So i texted, I assume you've cancelled the accommodation and she didn't answer me.
At that point I decided I wasn't going anyway, so I canceled the experience.

Her next text told me that she hadn't cancelled the accommodation and was going to use it for herself and husband!!
She also wanted me to uncancel the experience so she could do that too.

I am stunned at her actions and a little bamboozled as to what's actually caused her to act this way.

Can anyone see what I might have done to upset her?? She also suggested we meet up in a couple of weeks time!!

You didn’t pay, this is the issue

The other thing involved a celebrity she doesn't like, so I thought ok fair enough, but I was really annoyed at the way she voiced her opinion, it was just a no.... at that point I thought we should meet up and have a chat but she ignore that request, so I decided not to send my half of the accommodation until we'd discussed it as at that point I wasn't sure i wanted to go away with her, she'd been a little awkward recently.
I also wanted to discuss it so she could cancel the accommodation if we decided not to go. And I could cancel the painting, by the time I did i lost half the money!

Well you are the unreasonable one. You sound like someone people need to tip toe around and who makes a big deal of nothing with how you acted, YABU

Heylittlesongbird · 05/09/2026 09:04

You both wanted to go painting so you booked it and she quickly paid you her half.

Then you told her to book accommodation, which she did.

At this point you suggested seeing a celebrity there at the same time. She said no, I don’t like them.

At this point it appears you said we need to meet in person to discuss this and withheld your payment for half the accommodation.

Then you messaged to say let’s just cancel.

And she has decided to salvage something from this by going with her husband.

And you really don’t think you’re the one in the wrong?!

ladyb2gw · 05/09/2026 09:11

Well honestly it sounds to me like you stamped your feet because the friend didn’t want to do the second experience. Maybe she’s working at standing up for herself and what she wants. Be honest with yourself is she normally a people pleaser

Dery · 05/09/2026 09:11

“So you picked the first experience, she sorted the accommodation, then because she said no to you dictating the next bit of the trip you didn’t pay her your share of the accommodation?
Tbh unless you’ve worded that badly you come across appallingly.
You didn’t know if you wanted to go anymore because she didn’t say yes to everything you wanted? That’s very toddler behaviour”

This with bells on.

GreatPinkViper · 05/09/2026 09:11

You still haven't explained why she was reluctant to book the accommodation in the first place. Have you got history with her for not paying your share on time?

Jerrybalanitis · 05/09/2026 09:12

Christ why do we have to faff around with ridiculous words? Experience? Fuck off words, its a painting lesson. I am having an experience now. I am sitting in a mall car park judging this words insanity but I haven't had to pay for it. I despair of the British people, everything has to hace a bloody extra word or phrase. People use potentially as a filler word, I potentially asked him if he liked myself. Seriously. Grow up Britain!

Rpop · 05/09/2026 09:15

Myplantsmyrules · 05/09/2026 04:53

You seemed to escalate things quickly. She didn't want to do the second experience so instead of accepting that, you wanted to arrange a meet up to discuss it, why? To try and change her mind? To berate her?
Why not just accept the no?
Then escalate it further by assuming she had cancelled the accommodation.

I'm imagining from her side she has simply said she doesn't want to do something, then its suddenly a big thing that needs discussing in person. Then you're cancelling the experience and expecting she's cancelled the accommodation, all a lot of drama over someone saying no.

this is how I read it too.

i can imagine if someone suggests meeting a celebrity that I don’t want to meet, I’d have a NO!! reaction. Especially if the whole weekend was a little more their idea. Then if I was asked to meet up to discuss it, it think noooooooooooooo.

JLou08 · 05/09/2026 09:19

She said no to an activity and you turned it into a huge deal instead of just accepting that she didn't want to do it. It sounds like you were trying to manipulate the situation by saying you need to meet to discuss your 'disagreement' and not paying your part of the accommodation.

Beingseenisneedy · 05/09/2026 09:22

A straight No to the activity sounds like a fed up response because you already knew she wasn't a fan of this celebrity, so would have been discussed before.

As PP have said, the way you're being vague here suggests you know YABU but want to sway the vote.

If you truly want help, state everything honestly instead of the bity information.

Starlia · 05/09/2026 09:26

It sounds like you may have form for dictating the activities you do on a weekend away and your friend was already pissed with you before she booked the accommodation. Your communication skills sound pretty low level.
I think you need to self-reflect rather than blame everything on her.

BlueFahrenheit · 05/09/2026 09:29

Wake up @Ihateknowingthis

She's not speaking to you because you haven't paid your share of the hotel stay.

Duh.

Pushmepullu · 05/09/2026 09:31

You do realise, OP, that you need to refund her ALL of what she paid you for the painting session that YOU cancelled, not just half the amount you got back? Sometimes relationships run their course and people don’t want to be the one that walks away until they find a reason to. Looks like your friend has found a reason to.

professionalcommentreader · 05/09/2026 09:32

You sound really controlling and petty. Hopefully she sees sense and ditches you.

MyArtfulGreySloth · 05/09/2026 09:44

There must be more to this, her whole reaction is very odd.

AppleButterGutter · 05/09/2026 09:46

OP hasn’t come back to answer questions as she has her hands full of her arse which has been handed to her by most people on this thread.

Probably… but also she was messaging on here until almost 3am and now it’s Saturday morning. She’s probably just asleep. Not convinced she has enough self awareness to admit defeat to be honest

BeHeartyRedZebra · 05/09/2026 09:51

Changed my vote after that massive drip feed YABU. Why even say she slightly unwillingly booked accommodation when you didn’t even transfer her any money for it? I would begrudgingly front it too.

I hope you’re planning on giving her the half back she paid you for the activity.

BlushingBrightly · 05/09/2026 09:54

How did you manage to cancel the accommodation when she'd booked it? That's not how it usually works.

Ladyfromthehill · 05/09/2026 09:59

Did I read correctly- she paid you half the experience, but also paid all of the accomodation-- have you offered before suggesting the second experience paying her some of the accomodation back?
Because it sort of looks she paid for the accomodation (maybe it was more than the experience) for both of you, paid for her share of the experience, and then you started talking about nother experience she would not enjoy.

Obvs unreasonable she expected you to then donate the experience to her.

Viviennemary · 05/09/2026 10:02

You didn't pay your share of the expenses but she paid you her share of what you laid out. That's what it comes down to under all the waffle and not knowing what you could possibly have done wrong as you are so reasonable. Hmmm.

Shessweetbutapsycho · 05/09/2026 10:07

When you said you were “upset and annoyed” what did you actually say to her? I wonder what her account of this interaction was? I’m not saying you did anything wrong, but this is the only part of your story that makes me wonder if perhaps you came across rude/agressive to her? It is strange you mention things had already been a little bit awkward though, it does sound like something else is going on

Starzinsky · 05/09/2026 10:10

I think you were unreasonable to not accept she didn't want to do the second experience and withheld the accommodation. It's coercive and controlling. So not surprised she no longer wanted to holiday with you.

TeenLifeMum · 05/09/2026 10:11

Ihateknowingthis · 05/09/2026 00:08

There wasn't one

I mean the one in your op that she didn’t want to do and that annoyed you as that seems to be the point the relationship broke down.

Hankunamatata · 05/09/2026 10:13

Why didnt you give her your half of the money for the accomadation before she booked or same day?

Inthink unwillingness to book and pay was your clue
