how much does everyone spend on coffee and eating out

OP posts:
PerfectPairing · 02/09/2026 05:08

Coffee. I don’t drink it but between my partner and 2 kids we probably spend £100 per month.

Eating out. Usually between £600 - £800 per month.

menopausequeen · 02/09/2026 05:17

Probably about £300 a month on coffees and eating out, maybe more and same for my husband. We often have a long walk with the dog and then brunch out on weekends as well as dinner out.

Littlegreywolfcub · 02/09/2026 05:22

Between me and Dh around £60 s month on coffees and the odd piece of cake or bacon bap/

We might well share a piece of cake too. Meals out are more rare and happen once every 2 or 3 months. [if that]

Upyermonkey · 02/09/2026 05:27

Nothing at all on coffee; can make it in work and wouldn’t buy it when out and about unless specifically meeting ‘for a coffee’ / social event.
The price is shocking. It’s hype IMO
Only me with a nice flask then??

Nope, me too. I don’t drink instant coffee and I make myself a morning cafetière every day. If we’re going out, I’ll make a flask (Stanley Aerolite) with a proper coffee bag (Taylor’s or M&S). I reckon my flask has paid for itself in about a fortnight, judging by some of the answers on here. I live in a market town famed for its cafes but only one of the probably two dozen makes a decent coffee. Not going to pay four quid for a lukewarm cup of weakly-caffeinated liquid.

WellConfusedandDazed · 02/09/2026 05:46

I hardly ever buy coffee anymore because I find the prices ridiculous now. I live in Europe, €6-7 for a milky coffee —Nope. Eating out is different, we probably do so at least once a week, can vary from €30 at a burger place to €150 for proper restaurant with booze and 2 courses.

Comeonbabylightmyaga · 02/09/2026 05:51

I’ve spent a total of £625 on eating out and coffee this year. Mostly in March while on holiday and June for various family celebrations.

Why are asking?

KitchenBallet · 02/09/2026 05:57

Between coffee and eating out we spend about £1k a month. Shocking really.

GnomeDePlume · 02/09/2026 06:02

Almost nothing. Ground coffee is wasted on me, I prefer instant. Heathen I know. We eat out maybe once per year, if that. DH is too good a cook so prefer to eat at home spending on really good ingredients and wine. Takeaway every couple of months.

IDontHateRainbows · 02/09/2026 06:08

Coffee addict so maybe 4 x a week. Eating out, maybe 2ce a month. Nit including the spud van/ butty place near work which isn't really eating out just convenient food grab. Maybe x 3 a week.

Epoisses · 02/09/2026 06:11

We eat out at least once a week...about £400 a month. Coffees...about £25 a week for both of us.
We can afford it...comfortably retired. We love food....cook from scratch every day and try new recipes weekly.
Lucky to live in a place which has an excellent variety of independent restaurants and we travel a lot .

ThankYouNigel · 02/09/2026 06:21

I drink my own hot drinks at home or take flasks out on day trips with our children. I very occasionally have a hot drink out if I meet a friend, once every 1-2 months.

We cook at home and take our own picnics on day trips. My DH and I go to an adult restaurant for dinner for special occasions. We attend family birthday meals at restaurants. We have a take away or eat out as a 4 very occasionally. We get the odd McDonald’s, eg at services when driving back at an awkward time from somewhere.

IHateEmptyPockets · 02/09/2026 06:22

Zero on coffee. Don't eat out but used to get the occasional fish and chips… until ours closed. So now we only get that when we visit friends who live in a nice village with an award winning chippy. So that could be 2 or 3 times a year. We prefer to eat at home tbh.

Sl33ple55 · 02/09/2026 06:35

Zero- hate Costa and Starbucks , make far better at home using my Bialetti. Have a big coffee before work, no need for any more.

Hate chain restaurants( I make far better at home), Dishoom and one Rockfish are the exception but don’t have Dishoom near me and the one Rockfish I like is an hour away. Much prefer good independent cafes and restaurants. Work full time and normally busy at weekends so eating out is normally for a treat or special occasions a few times a year and somewhere we really like. I can cook well and prefer to cook well at home- organic veg box etc

Shoxfordian · 02/09/2026 06:35

I usually get a coffee twice a week on my way into work, 4 each, sometimes an extra one at work for another fiver or so - probably 15 ish a week on coffee

I buy my breakfast and lunch on office days, so that can be another 20 or so

My dh and I usually eat out every week, 200 or so, and usually get a takeaway or breakfast delivered for 30 on the weekend

DontKillSteve · 02/09/2026 06:40

DH and I probably spend £200 a week on work lunches and eating out- nothing fancy. Bit depressing really.

BCBird · 02/09/2026 06:43

0 on coffees- don't drink it. Very little on eating out. I don't eat gluten and find the food on offer generally inadequate. It makes me not want to bother.

CordwainerBird · 02/09/2026 06:57

I buy a coffee every day, usually from Pret in the week and somewhere independent on weekends, so between 99p and 3.50ish per day. Sometimes with pastry so an additional £4

Buy lunch about once a week, £10

eating out about once a fortnight, £50pp

it probably adds up to a lot more. Monzo tracks my coffee purchases, maybe I should check!

Urgentbiscuitrequired · 02/09/2026 07:01

Coffee probably once every two months/quater

Takeaway a few times a year

Eating out - a few times a year. If extended family are there and we are in an understanding restaurant.

Have a child with ASD and severe intellectual disability that would smear food on himself and the table/be loud. We tend to just have a pint if we go to a pub and leave it at that but even then that is hard much of the time and not worth the hassle. Only really worth going for a meal if there are a lot of us as one of us is focused on our son all of the time, so it's a pointless exercise if just my family.

Coffee - again a bit tricky on the go with a child like mine.

Takeaway - I only have if I REALLY can't be arsed to cook. The only time a takeaway ha blown my mind is if I've been incredibly drunk, otherwise disappointing and expensive.

wrongsock · 02/09/2026 07:04

I live in a city and I feel like take away coffee and eating out with friends (& family) are a pretty normal part of life. At times when I’ve had less money it’s been really hard to avoid as it’s how my friend group socialise.

Since everything has gotten so expensive I definitely do it less but I’d say I get takeaway coffee or matcha maybe twice a week and eat out on average 1-2 times a week. But 1 of those times is always cheaper place (we like going to local Turkish brunch place where it’s only around £10-12 per meal).

All in all I’d guess typically I spend £400 pcm.

Like others have said, I don’t really buy other things though (alcohol, clothes, make up etc.) so this is where my money goes.

Konstantine8364 · 02/09/2026 07:07

£0 on coffee as I don't have hot drinks. Probably £300/£400 on eating out, usually eat out once a week for £30 to 70ish, occasionally twice. Then a couple of lunches over the month plus a takeaway or two. Good food is so important to me and we have excellent options in south/central Manchester! If I lived in a rural village I'd probably eat out a lot less as I find when I go away hiking etc the options are samey/not great.

Whorulestheroost1 · 02/09/2026 07:08

Is this a survey??

Why don't you tell us about your habits OP?

Bluenotgreen · 02/09/2026 07:09

Coffee out, maybe five times a year.

Lunches maybe £250 a year.

Dinner out £250 a year.

This excludes holiday spending. Never have takeaways.

InvitedWho · 02/09/2026 07:10

I don’t buy daily coffees as I have a machine at home and in the office so I just buy beans.

We do eat out often and have takeaways. DH and I have about 3 date nights each month and that involves dinner and drinks, so 80-100 each time. Weekly takeaway is about £40. We have a family meal out once a month so that’s probably 150. So, about £500 a month.

This has been from our disposable income and after all other financial priorities have been met. That said, our oldest is about to go to university and our eating out budget in one area we can easily reduce as we contribute to towards his living costs.

Meadowfinch · 02/09/2026 07:10

Almost nothing but I've been paying school fees for the last 7 years and couldn't afford it. Now I'm paying halls fees so it will be the same for the next three years.

I cook supper for my friends fairly regularly though, and my food is just as good as some of our local restaurants. And I do good picnics. 😊
