AIBU to make a roast when my daughter asked me not to?

Adult daughter 22 is not a fan of roast dinners. She asked me if I could not do a roast dinner today and make something else which I agreed to. However I had a chicken in freezer that needed using up today but I did make a pasta bake which is something she likes as an alternative. I like to make a family dinner on a Sunday for us all. Daughter was disappointed about the roast but I explained to her I had to use chicken up but I did make something she liked as alternative. She said to me you told me you wouldn’t make a roast and she looked upset. She didn’t go hungry though as she had Cottage Pie after saying there’s nothing to eat. AIBU to of made the roast even though there was pasta dish as alternative or was she being unreasonable here as I feel bad about it.

Cottage pie was from last night. I don’t like using chicken past it’s sell by date. She didn’t fancy the pasta bake.

If so, why bother freezing it. The sell by date is for when it is fresh & uncooked.

Freezing it suspends degradation literally for months.

Cooking in-date meat kills existing bacteria, meaning it will keep for an additional few days.

At 22, your dd can make her own food if she doesn't like what you cook. So you are both unreasonable.

Did you ask her if she wanted a pasta bake?
It's a bit random to cook one if you didn't know if she wanted it.

She’s 22, with 3 meal options, all cooked for her by someone else! OP isn’t a cook in a restaurant making whatever her DD orders.

She’s unreasonable to fuss about her multiple meal options.
She’s very unreasonable to expect that not only she doesn’t eat a roast, no one else does either.

Daughter did not ask for any other dish to be made she said can we not have roast but I made her pasta bake

Sorry but she's an entitled young lady. You are not doing her any favours pandering to her behaviour.

Feel obliged to point out that there are indeed dates by which you are supposed to eat frozen foods. Dates differ for types of food.
Unless you are absolutely certain that food will be used before those dates, items should be marked with the date when placed in the freezer.
Chicken is a food that people can tend to treat with a little more caution re dates.
DD was being unreasonable, unless you have a strong history of just ignoring her requests OP and deliberately doing the opposite.

Indeed, but I don’t know anyone IRL that’s ever paid any attention whatsoever to this part of the blurb on food (‘freeze on day of purchase and eat within 2 months’ etc).

until now.

myrtleWilson · 31/08/2026 07:24

I suspect Turtle (only these posts under that name) is rather regretting the freezer slip up in their original post as it’s serving as a distraction from intended purpose of whipping up a storm about her putative 22yr old daughter.

Greebocat · 31/08/2026 07:25

i think people are being a bit unkind to you, you had your reasons for wanting to use the chicken that day, whether it was in the fridge or the freezer. Your daughter was totally out of order, reasonable to not want a roast completely unreasonable to ask you not to cook one for everyone else and then look upset because you did, especially as you cooked her an alternative.

hididdlyho · 31/08/2026 07:25

At 22 she's old enough to leave the house by herself and buy her own food if the meal you've cooked doesn't suit her. I wouldn't have offered an alternative and suggested she can take a turn cooking for the family next week, then she can choose something she wants to eat.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 31/08/2026 07:27

People are dying she needs to get a grip in the nicest way possible 😂

RosesAndHellebores · 30/08/2026 23:27

Did you buy the bird fresh and freeze it?

Did she have cottage pie or pasta? Did everyone else have roast chicken?

I'm struggling with your posts and what you mean.

Why does it matter? @TURTLE74 can make a roast dinner any time she wants, she doesn't need an excuse and she doesn'tneed her daughter's permission. The daughter got an alternative dish so she didn't go without

BreatheAndFocus · 31/08/2026 07:28

Why are you discussing meal planning with your adult daughter who doesn’t seem able to cook? Presumably you’re not running a restaurant and she’s not paying to order a specific meal? YOU decide what you’re making. If she doesn’t fancy it, tough shit.

She sounds unbearably spoilt, and your agonising about whether you did the wrong thing by making a roast, suggests it’s you who’ve spoilt her and pandered to her. She’s 22 fgs! Stop babying her.

Wait for the drip feed of excuses that will try to make us all feel bad for asking about the chicken.

MagneticSquirrel · 31/08/2026 07:30

YANBU at 22 she should be cooking at home as well, and definitely doesn’t get to dictate what the cook of the day prepares for the household. If you’d given her the choice and said roast or X, then made a roast then YABU. However if she just said yesterday please don’t make a roast today then my response would be ok, what are you cooking instead.

(However using up frozen chicken is necessary - the use by date only applies to chilled food - it lasts for months in the freezer)

Genevieva · 31/08/2026 07:33

She had a choice of three meals! She was a lucky girl - you aren’t a restaurant. Did you ask why she wanted to deprive others of a Sunday roast?

OrneryWorld · 31/08/2026 07:34

No wonder DD got upset about the roast. If it's a mumsnet chicken she'd be eating the leftovers for a week.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 31/08/2026 07:36

Strawberrydelight78 · 31/08/2026 00:46

It’s frozen so can be stored in the freezer for at least a year after the best before date. How can you not know that?😂😂😂

A year you say!?! 😬 (sidles off to hang head in circa 2014-ish freezer shame 😳) 😂

TURTLE74 · 30/08/2026 23:27

Cottage pie was from last night. I don’t like using chicken past it’s sell by date. She didn’t fancy the pasta bake.

Why bother freezing it then? Has she got her neuroses from you? 😂

MrsPapillon · 31/08/2026 07:41

I have a 22 year old DD. Here’s how that conversation would go in our house.

DD: I don’t like roast dinners.
Me: Well everyone else does so that’s what I’m making. You can have some, or you can make yourself something else if that’s what you’d prefer.

No making other meals, no justifications over frozen chickens. She’s an adult woman.

ScottBakula · 31/08/2026 07:46

Leaving aside the whole chicken > frezzer > date issue because that's as mad as a box of ( unfrozen) frogs .

Your dd asked you not to cook a roast , you said you wouldn't but you did anyway so solely for this point yabu.

You cooked her a pasta bake instead so, solely for this point she is bu.

There was leftover cottage pie that she ate had this ( or any of its components) been frozen at any point ?
So solely for this point she is bu

So on balance she ibu.

Now come back @TURTLE74 and please explain what you think frezzers are for.

Lemonade2011 · 31/08/2026 07:48

If my 21/25 year olds don’t like ‘what’s for dinner’ they make something for themselves. As they are adults. If that was my daughter it would’ve been oh well sort yourself out then, at 22! If I liked a roast I’d make one far too much pandering and faffing over nothing. Why was she upset about a roast she didn’t want?

Who the heck has the time or inclination to be negotiating what they cook for an adults dinner, she can cook for herself. Mine eat what I make no moaning if they don’t like/want they make their own, my younger sons eat what I make. Can’t please everyone but I would not accept them being rude?!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 31/08/2026 07:49

Maybe it is the smell of the roast dinner or all the faff that goes with it that puts her off eating it. She had dinner, she’ll survive.,

crazymommaclub · 31/08/2026 07:49

I think given she is an adult she’s veing very unreasonable. Did you end up making 3 dinners in the end to please her (roast, pasta and cottage pie)? You should cook whatever you want and it is her choice whether to eat it or make her own food. You’re not eu ning a restaurant!

SandyLanes · 31/08/2026 07:54

TURTLE74 · 30/08/2026 23:27

Cottage pie was from last night. I don’t like using chicken past it’s sell by date. She didn’t fancy the pasta bake.

Why did you bother freezing the chicken if you were always going to eat it before its best before date? That makes no sense and completely defeats the point of freezing fish and meat!

sashh · 31/08/2026 07:56

I have questions OP

Was DD upset that you made a roast or was she upset that she asked you to do something, you agreed to it, then didn't?

Do you have a history with her of she asks for something, you agree to it and then don't carry through?

How many people were you cooking for? If it was just you and DD

Why didn't you use the chicken to make something that is not a roast?

Also the date on the chicken, what is that all about?

BeardofHagrid · 31/08/2026 07:58

Tell her to think about the orphans in Gaza. Honestly I’ve never heard something so entitled and petty in all my life.
