I found out my wife and my best friend had a physical relationship before we got married, I don't know how to react

I genuinely don't know what to write or how I'm supposed to react to this.

My wife and I are both in our mid 40s. My best friend is also the same age. He has been my best friend since childhood. He's the godfather to our children, and my wife and I are godparents to his children.

For a bit more context, my wife and he are also very close friends. They actually knew each other before I knew either of them, and they've always had a very good friendship

Our families are extremely close. We normally see each other every week for breakfast or a BBQ in one of our gardens. We go on family trips together, celebrate birthdays and holidays together, and our children are all teenagers and are basically like cousins.

My wife and I have a genuinely good marriage. We've been together for decades, we love each other, we're financially comfortable, and as far as I knew there was absolutely nothing wrong between us.

Then on Friday night, my best friend told me he needed to confess something that had happened a very long time ago.

He told me that when we were 18, during a six month breakup between me and my now wife, he and my wife had a sexual relationship for around 2–3 months.

I honestly felt physically sick when he told me.

I didn't know how to react. I cried. He just stood there and kept telling me that it ended years ago, that nothing had happened since, and that I shouldn't be angry with my wife because we weren't together at the time.

I got angry with him and told him I didn't want him to contact me again. Then I went home.

For context, yes, I broke up with my wife when we were 18. I was an idiot teenager and I broke her heart. That's on me. We were apart for about six months, then eventually got back together. We've been solid ever since.

In all those years, I've never had a reason to believe she was cheating on me. Not once.

Yesterday, I told my wife what he'd confessed. At first she said she had kept it from me because she didn't want to lose me. She apologised for hiding it.

She confirmed that they had been together for around three months while we were broken up. She said they eventually stopped because they realised remaining friends was better for them, and then around three months later, she and I got back together.

But then she also told me that technically it was none of my business who she slept with while we were broken up. It was her body and she was single. If this had been some random person she slept with during those six months, I probably wouldn't care now.

But it wasn't some random person. It was my best friend. The man who stood beside me as my best man at our wedding. I've trusted for most of my life. I've allowed into my home every week. That man who is godfather to my children.

And they've both known about this for 26 years while I had absolutely no idea. That's the part I can't get past. I keep thinking about every BBQ, every family holiday, every time the four of us have sat together talking, and wondering whether they were both looking at each other and remembering something I didn't know. My wife keeps saying that nothing happened during our relationship and that she has loved me all these years. And honestly, I believe her But something has changed in my head. I can't look at my friend the same way anymore. I can't even look at their friendship the same way.

Part of me wants to completely cut him and his family out of our lives. No more breakfasts, no more BBQs, no more holidays together. I don't want my children caught in the middle, but at the same time I don't know how I'm supposed to carry on having him around as if nothing happened.

And then there's my wife. I know technically she didn't cheat on me. We were broken up.
But she deliberately kept this from me for 26 years, and so did he. I'm struggling with the fact that two of the people I trusted most in the world knew something incredibly significant about my own life that I didn't know. I don't know whether I'm overreacting because it happened so long ago, or whether the fact that it was my best friend and was deliberately kept secret makes this completely different.

But right now I feel hurt, betrayed, embarrassed and honestly a bit stupid and Jealousy so much

Let it go

The "Friends" drama was the first thing I thought of.

@jhkyg You were NOT together and had life played out a different way, maybe you would never have gotten back together.
To let something this silly and minor bother you is just losing the plot.
Be grateful she took you back after you treated her so poorly and "broke her heart".
Be glad it was your best friend she was seeing and not some other dude who might have taken her far-far away and she wouldn't have been available when you came to your senses. You should be thanking your friend.

I feel bad for your wife and friend, not really for you.

Bunny65 · 30/08/2026 22:25

It was a brief fling years ago when you weren’t together. The really disturbing thing is why your friend felt the need to tell you.

Paddingtonsmarmaladesandwich2 · 30/08/2026 22:25

jhkyg · 30/08/2026 10:23

Tell me....what should I do? Chill?

Like nothing happened, nothing was hidden....I can't trust them again!! They lost it

Honestly i don't know what else they have hided...
Or they think it's not important to tell me

I guess we are all reacting to the fact that life is good and you have good relations now that sound very settled - why jeopardise that? It was such a long time ago. You are older and wiser - at the end of the day it fizzled out on its own so there is no great hidden passion lurking.

I wonder if they didnt tell at the time because of your likely reaction - neither of them could know at the time you’d backtrack on your decision and want to go out with your wife again..

I do wonder why they are telling you now??? Can you find that out?

Paddingtonsmarmaladesandwich2 · 30/08/2026 22:30

LoafofSellotape · 30/08/2026 10:28

But you know about it right? The OP doesn't,that's the difference.

on some level I agree - but I really don’t think it’s worth chucking away what sounds like a very nice life/relationships now - and I can’t help wondering if this is a male pride thing???

Either people are much more chilled about this than I (and I suspect, all my friends) are or you aren’t really being honest with yourselves.

How many of you would choose as chief bridesmaid someone who had a short relationship (it wasn’t a hook up, it was months, and based on friendship) with your fiance?

He should have been able to decide that kind of question based on full knowledge.

If she and I had been best friends for years and I wasn't with my boyfriend at the time, it would be wrong to be upset over it.

Geeze, in my hometown, couples dated during high school, broke up and then later I would find out they wed a different guy from the same school and her friend had dated him all through school. And they all were still friends. Oh, the horror!

The only thing that matters is who you marry and who you stay with. The rest is just bullshit fluff.

HardyCrow · 30/08/2026 22:38

VenusThighTrap · 30/08/2026 09:20

You’re overreacting. They were teenagers. You weren’t together. You said you acted like an idiot at the time and broke her heart - she’s obviously forgiven you for that. You need to also leave this in the past.

This. Get over yourself really you’re being a bit too much of a drama queen

Paddingtonsmarmaladesandwich2 · 30/08/2026 22:39

jhkyg · 30/08/2026 10:31

Probably, I would have never gone back to her, not because of ego, but because I wouldn’t have wanted things to be messy.

At the very least, I wouldn’t have had the same friendship with my friend. He wouldn’t have been my best man or my son’s godfather, or anything like that.

I think this is why they didn’t tell you - you would consider it messy - they were 18 and you’d broken up - you did the breaking up!!! And it didn’t need to be messy - you’ve proved that. I’m sorry but I think this is about ego - what is messy now? It was teenage sec that inv wasn’t that great as it didn’t carry on.

what does it matter in the great scheme of things…

like pp said - laugh about that she chose the better guy!!!

il sorry but I just don’t consider some teenage sex so devastating given 26 years have passed. No one has cancer for goodness sake. Your acting like you are still 18 imv

YourAmberExpert · 30/08/2026 22:40

What do you mean one of the kids isn't yours? How do you know? I am confused as to how your writing has changed so much over the course of this thread.
Are you just wanting to vent as you seem very sure that you can't forgive either of them so what is your hope for the future?

Good catch. The writing seems to have gone from legible and coherent to off the wall, with grammar and other "issues". Maybe it's a party and they're bored as they take turns posting?

Paddingtonsmarmaladesandwich2 · 30/08/2026 22:50

MichLBee · 30/08/2026 10:35

I would be so upset in your shoes. They haven't cheated but they have betrayed you by keeping this from you. Had they been honest about it at the beginning, you could have chosen how to handle it then. This isn't about sex. It's about the lies, the secrecy and that ruins most, if not all, trust. It's not so easy to walk away now so they took that choice away from you. Does your best friend's wife know? Apologies if you've already answered that as I haven't read the whole thread. I'd be questioning why he suddenly felt the need to relieve himself of his guilt, all these years later. I'm not sure i could ever get over this and I really feel for you.

I’m sorry but yes it is actually all about the sex - some teenage sex that was had when they weren’t even together and it wasn’t that good as they both called time on it - it fizzled out

and he wants to blow up his whole life and marriage over it - ridiculous

Paddingtonsmarmaladesandwich2 · 30/08/2026 22:56

sugarplumlily · 30/08/2026 10:43

This is all ego. The OP is in shock because he’s used to pulling all the punches. He dumped his girlfriend at age 18 and broke her heart. One of the reasons she probably ended up sleeping with the friend is because when you are 18 and in your first heart broken situation you are far more likely to run into the nearest familiar (you could say ‘safe’) arms to help yourself feel better. I’ve lost count of the amount of my friends who did this sort of stuff between ages 16-21. The OP is pissed because he thinks he had a girl who maybe only has ever had sex with him? And now he’s learning his actions had consequences and he’s not her only lover. The fact she slept with someone who ended up being a long term friend is a red herring. They didn’t know at age 18 that their future teenage kids would be living in each others pockets. How could they have. The didn’t betray you. They protected you. Get over it.

Absolutely this!!!! Well said

Paddingtonsmarmaladesandwich2 · 30/08/2026 22:56

jhkyg · 30/08/2026 10:52

Did they protect me, or did they protect themselves?

I never said I thought my wife had only ever had sex with me. My issue is that she kept something significant from me, especially when that person remained such an important part of our lives. So are you saying you support lying or deliberately withholding important things in a marriage?

She didn’t know they were going to be so important!!!

justasmalltownmum · 30/08/2026 23:04

The only issue here is why is telling you now

justasking111 · 30/08/2026 23:18

Why can't people keep their mouths shut these days. Take it to the grave as our parents and grandparents did.

Seajaye · 30/08/2026 23:22

It's obviously a shock but there's been no infidelity during the marriage and she had no way of knowing that you and she would ever get back together. People with broken hearts often do stupid things as part of the process . She and he were mature enough to realise that's all.it was and ended it. Don't t allow the intrusive thoughts to ruin an otherwise good and long marriage. Maybe get some counselling and support to deal with the intrusive thoughts. You may want a bit of.diatance between your friend and yourself for a while, but you don't have to end the friendship unless that's the only way you can it the thoughts out of your head

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 30/08/2026 23:31

ThatCyanCat · 30/08/2026 19:49

What I don't get is that a man did do this, so what are they rabbiting about? If anyone did anything wrong it was him for shagging his best mate's new ex; she was single and didn't have any kind of connection to him that might arguably have made it inappropriate. He did. If anyone did anything dubious it was the man (boy!) so the fact that so many people are telling him to get over it is nothing to do with being lenient to a woman.

I agree, except that his wife and his friend had been close friends before the OP ever came on the scene. It would make sense that those two would lean on each other when OP hurts her so badly. No idea how long OP and his wife's friend had been "best mates" before he dumped her for not rooting for his football team.

Of course, watching how the OP's posts have gone from correctly and well- written to babble to well-written to babble, over and over makes me wonder what OP is doing. I hope OP is staying sober so he doesn't overreact even more.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 30/08/2026 23:39

jhkyg · 30/08/2026 10:24

Whatever, I feel so bad....i can't trust them again

Then, leave the friendship and the marriage behind and go be morose, jealous and woebegone all on your own, instead of acting like a grown-up.

They were friends BEFORE you came into the picture, so YOU can leave and they can still be friends. They did nothing wrong and should not have to pay the price for your insecurities, unjustified anger and jealousy.

I wish your friend had never told you, but maybe he knew how you would react and has seen you aren't as good a husband as you claim so he is protecting the person who was his friend first.

SkyLark79 · 30/08/2026 23:42

Is this a kind of ‘watch the birdie’ confession to throw somebody off something much bigger? It is really odd to suddenly confess this now for no real reason. As others have said, it’s the lies and not the sex itself that must hurt.

AMillionPeopleCheering · 30/08/2026 23:52

My DH of 30 years does not know every daft thing I did at 18. And vice versa.

Sounds like you want to play the victim and make everyone watch your dramatic suffering and heartbreak.
If you have a good marriage and want to keep it, time to give your head wobble. If you want to split up, thats OK.
But all this crap about you can never trust her again is a little bit childish. If she's not earned your trust by now, she never will.

Yankiedoodlebabe · 31/08/2026 00:38

I agree with your wife, it wasn’t and still isn’t any of your business who she had sexual relations with while you were broken up. Unless you asked her directly and she lied, but that’s not what happened. You were kids then, who cares.

But like many other posters have pointed out, why did this supposed best friend feel the need to say something about it all these years later? That might be worth investigating.

Pallisers · 31/08/2026 00:44

My DH of 30 years does not know every daft thing I did at 18. And vice versa.

You don't think having sex with the man who is his best man and the godfather of your children might feel a little different to your dh than "every daft thing"?

Ditto!

Sam9769 · 31/08/2026 00:51

Come on OP! Tell us please!
We ALL want to know why did he tell you now?
What's behind it?

DearDenimEagle · 31/08/2026 00:59

Male or female in this situation..you had broken up with her. She didn’t know you’d come back so she was a free agent . She was entitled to move on. It didn’t last. Rebound stuff..it happens when someone is heartbroken, as you say she was. Rejection hurts. To feel wanted again is soothing and healing.
You are being selfish. It ran a short course and that it happened was down to your rejection of her.

get over it. or not . It doesn’t matter it was your friend. He helped her through a painful time . If you let it change anything now, you’re as much of a fool as you were the first time you broke her heart.

What’s odd is why friend felt he had to say something now.
