I found out my wife and my best friend had a physical relationship before we got married, I don't know how to react

jhkyg · 30/08/2026 09:15

I genuinely don't know what to write or how I'm supposed to react to this.

My wife and I are both in our mid 40s. My best friend is also the same age. He has been my best friend since childhood. He's the godfather to our children, and my wife and I are godparents to his children.

For a bit more context, my wife and he are also very close friends. They actually knew each other before I knew either of them, and they've always had a very good friendship

Our families are extremely close. We normally see each other every week for breakfast or a BBQ in one of our gardens. We go on family trips together, celebrate birthdays and holidays together, and our children are all teenagers and are basically like cousins.

My wife and I have a genuinely good marriage. We've been together for decades, we love each other, we're financially comfortable, and as far as I knew there was absolutely nothing wrong between us.

Then on Friday night, my best friend told me he needed to confess something that had happened a very long time ago.

He told me that when we were 18, during a six month breakup between me and my now wife, he and my wife had a sexual relationship for around 2–3 months.

I honestly felt physically sick when he told me.

I didn't know how to react. I cried. He just stood there and kept telling me that it ended years ago, that nothing had happened since, and that I shouldn't be angry with my wife because we weren't together at the time.

I got angry with him and told him I didn't want him to contact me again. Then I went home.

For context, yes, I broke up with my wife when we were 18. I was an idiot teenager and I broke her heart. That's on me. We were apart for about six months, then eventually got back together. We've been solid ever since.

In all those years, I've never had a reason to believe she was cheating on me. Not once.

Yesterday, I told my wife what he'd confessed. At first she said she had kept it from me because she didn't want to lose me. She apologised for hiding it.

She confirmed that they had been together for around three months while we were broken up. She said they eventually stopped because they realised remaining friends was better for them, and then around three months later, she and I got back together.

But then she also told me that technically it was none of my business who she slept with while we were broken up. It was her body and she was single. If this had been some random person she slept with during those six months, I probably wouldn't care now.

But it wasn't some random person. It was my best friend. The man who stood beside me as my best man at our wedding. I've trusted for most of my life. I've allowed into my home every week. That man who is godfather to my children.

And they've both known about this for 26 years while I had absolutely no idea. That's the part I can't get past. I keep thinking about every BBQ, every family holiday, every time the four of us have sat together talking, and wondering whether they were both looking at each other and remembering something I didn't know. My wife keeps saying that nothing happened during our relationship and that she has loved me all these years. And honestly, I believe her But something has changed in my head. I can't look at my friend the same way anymore. I can't even look at their friendship the same way.

Part of me wants to completely cut him and his family out of our lives. No more breakfasts, no more BBQs, no more holidays together. I don't want my children caught in the middle, but at the same time I don't know how I'm supposed to carry on having him around as if nothing happened.

And then there's my wife. I know technically she didn't cheat on me. We were broken up.
But she deliberately kept this from me for 26 years, and so did he. I'm struggling with the fact that two of the people I trusted most in the world knew something incredibly significant about my own life that I didn't know. I don't know whether I'm overreacting because it happened so long ago, or whether the fact that it was my best friend and was deliberately kept secret makes this completely different.

But right now I feel hurt, betrayed, embarrassed and honestly a bit stupid and Jealousy so much

There is something going on. This is really, really sustained and has been happening for ages.

It's not against the rules of course, so there isn't really anything we can do about it. But it's definitely not in good faith and I do think it may change the nature of the site overall. Perhaps that's the objective.

It also really grinds my gears all the people constantly complaining about MN reflecting its demographic (such as it is these days, as if a) a mostly female space has a moral duty to be the Old Bailey and perfectly objective in everything b) the extensive manosphere is such a space that we could all learn from.

Absolutely, this ☝️

2O26 · 30/08/2026 19:48

I am so incredibly sorry you are going through this. They should have told you about it 26 years ago. Since they didn’t, your friend really should have kept quiet—there is just no good reason to bring it up and hurt you now. It feels like he only confessed to relieve his own guilt, which is understandable, but selfish. I completely understand why you are so devastated right now; carrying 26 years of lies is a massive betrayal. If you had known the truth back then, you could have processed it, healed, and moved on long ago. Hope you can eventually get passed this.

LeopardStar1 · 30/08/2026 19:48

Newbutoldfather · 30/08/2026 09:24

I think it’s the secrecy, not the sex, that is the issue.

They should have both told you about it when you got back together. Or kept quiet about it forever.

All the "if a man did this" comments and accusations that male posters are treated differently to women add nothing to the debate apart from demonstrating that the poster is a man and doesn't come on mumsnet much.

What I don't get is that a man did do this, so what are they rabbiting about? If anyone did anything wrong it was him for shagging his best mate's new ex; she was single and didn't have any kind of connection to him that might arguably have made it inappropriate. He did. If anyone did anything dubious it was the man (boy!) so the fact that so many people are telling him to get over it is nothing to do with being lenient to a woman.

Ohnobackagain · 30/08/2026 19:49

While a shock, you broke up with her so she was not cheating @jhkyg

justasking111 · 30/08/2026 19:50

Well if he's going to punish both of them for the rest of their lives for betraying him. It would be better to get divorced.

Bumblingbee101 · 30/08/2026 19:52

I can see how this would have come as a shock. It sounds the classic scenario, she was utterly heartbroken and he was waiting in the wings to comfort her and then some feelings developed. However, she chose to end it and stay friends. You have to remember though you dumped her you cannot say what she does in that time. If they had got together and stayed together you couldn't complain because you chose to not be with her anymore. Even if friendships were strained. Look at the last 20 years have you been happy? If the answer is mainly yes.. if she had told you when you were young maybe you would have got past it or maybe you would have left her again and not had the wonderful life you now have. Your wife is right.. you left her. She must have loved you as she gave YOU another chance. It is a shock but the real question is why now.. why did he say something thats what I would want to know. What's triggered it and does his wife know perhaps? Definitely sleep on it and don't make any rash decisions. Good luck @jhkyg

Chagalaga23 · 30/08/2026 19:53

He is an idiot for telling you now. If he or she had told you soon after, it would have been so much better. Or kept their lips sealed for ever.
But now, you are being an idiot. This is long past history. Why blow up your lovely lives - for you and your whole family - for your jealousy? It doesn't make sense.
Please think again. This is old stuff, let it go

PoliteGreyDreamer · 30/08/2026 19:53

You have had a hard time on here OP. And I think you would have got quite different responses in the Relationships section.

I had a brief relationship with a man when I was 20, which ended when he started banging my housemate, who was one of my best friends at the time. Obviously not as serious as your relationships, but the impact of two people quite close to me at the time conspired together in a way that hurt me is something I will take to the grave.

When I first read your title, it called to mind the fact that when I was about 19 I joined a uni sports team where everyone was in and out of everybody else's pants. There was a very handsome man there who I never got close to/copped off with on a night out. You get the picture. Several years later I met him again, as the childhood friend of my now husband... So thank fuck, right?

I even bought it up with my husband at a later date how pleased I was to have not copped off with one of his best mates BEFORE I HAD EVEN MET HIM. He agreed it would have put the kibosh on us.

YANBU

I don't understand.

26 years ago, when you were all teenagers, you broke a woman's heart because you were stupid, and she fell into the arms of a friend. After a couple of months, they realised neither of them wanted a relationship, and sometimes later she forgave you for hurting her and you got back together. She didn't tell you about the fling because she was scared of losing you. He didn't tell you because it wasn't his place to. Now nearly 3 decades later, he's blurted it out ... And you're behaving in exactly the way both of them thought you would when you were all teenagers.

Seriously?

Nearly 3 decades later and you want to blow it all up? You're not in the least bit curious as to why your best friend suddenly needs to confess. You don't care about that at all. You're the victim here. No need to reflect on what you did when you were 18 because now none of it is your fault, only those two are too blame. And no need to take responsibility for a bunch of other stuff, I suspect, because they've done something much much worse. I mean, what's worse than decades of betrayal?

Keep telling yourself that story. Destroy your marriage and your friendship. You can make that choice. Mess up your kids lives and relationships. Or put your big boy pants on. Explain how shocking and hurtful this is for you. Communicate like an adult. Because dying on the hill of the moral high ground is just stupid in your 40s and will look tragic in your 50s.

This.

Surely what matters is how they’ve behaved towards you in the decades since. And by the sounds of it, that is well.

If they’d told you back then, you wouldn’t have your wife, or your best friend. It is was technically their private business to share or not. No one cheated, they decided they were better as friends, they explored that dynamic before you got back together. Sometimes they’re the best friendships because the sexual side been got out of the way.

Take some time to lick your ego wounds and see how you feel.

OP hasn’t been back for a good long time now…

Since this morning? Maybe he has a life? Or some lengthy discussions are being had?
Whatever - 12 hours is not a good long time!

TomatoGlut · 30/08/2026 20:03

jhkyg · 30/08/2026 10:59

I never cheated on her. She said something offensive after my team lost the football final against her team (her house). I understand that her team had won and she was celebrating, but what she said crossed a line for me, so I broke up with her. And yes, my best friend was on the same team as her.

A few weeks later, I felt stupid about the whole thing and apologized to her. During that time, I was constantly telling my best friend that I still loved her and wanted her back. He would say things to me and give me advice, but now I've found out that, all that time, he was sleeping with her.

So yeah, what’s happening now isn’t simple. What happened back then is also an important part of the whole situation.

You broke up over a comment about football?

Jumped the shark there mate.

ThatCyanCat · 30/08/2026 20:07

The male posters on here (some of them are "mate"-ing each other, perhaps they know each other already) are keen to focus this all on the woman, her supposed wrongdoing and the women on here telling OP it isn't that big a deal.

But if there's a villain here, it's the male best friend who shagged his friend's new ex (she had no commitments or obligations) and then, nearly 30 years later when life was fine for everyone, decided to fuck shit up.

We have the dudebros on here very keen to point fingers at the wife and the women on here, but, for some reason, not at the only person who arguably did something wrong - a man.

ItsOkItsDarkChocolate · 30/08/2026 20:09

Ok, so, you pouring your heart out to him while they’re sleeping with each other, but not openly in a relationship, does not look good.

It was still years ago…. And they clearly valued in their lives.

I would not like the fact that he told you, not your wife. Why now?

All of that said, in a few days when the shock dies down, you will know how you want to play this. Hopefully things can return to as they were before. I’d want to be very sure nothing had happened since though..,

100% agree! Your best friend was still your best friend after they broke up. Your girlfriend was now your ex-girlfriend, so yes, she was free to hook up with whomever she wanted.

Stuckoncrossroads · 30/08/2026 20:17

Get over yourself op … seriously!
You are blessed with this solid loving marriage, close friendship, etc … things that are most precious and what really matters in life …but contemplating blowing what you got because your big fragile ego can’t get over itself ( over something that happened decades ago, and wasn’t even cheating, or your business technically, your wife is right)… i understand it must have been a shock, but it is perfectly their prerogative and judgement whether or not to disclose it, you don’t own their body or mind, and considering your meltdown, I can see why they chose not to tell you, out of consideration and love most probably. I would’ve regretted telling you if I were him.
Grow up, get over yourself, honestly. Be thankful to your friend for honesty/courage, it must have been a difficult decision to tell you , and be grateful and appreciative for the wonderful life, wife, family and friends you have.

I would strongly recommend you see a therapist, you’d most likely benefit from few sessions to process, and understand your
valid feelings and get over them like a grown up, without causing damage around you .

Wishing you all the best.

Mcoco · 30/08/2026 20:18

He really was not a friend at all especially as you were telling him you still had feelings for her. I guess with time your friend wants to come clean maybe the guilt is just getting too much. Who knows! Hopefully you can move past this OP. Best of luck

Baldrapunzel · 30/08/2026 20:20

Tbh I think you're being a drama llama over this - if you're prepared to blow up your marriage and family over a teenage fling lasting a few weeks after YOU broke up with your girlfriend you're an idiot. Stop wallowing.

They were all young and stupid. Their brains weren't even fully formed yet. It's absurd to get so bent out of shape about this all now.

100% agree! Your best friend was still your best friend after they broke up. Your girlfriend was now your ex-girlfriend, so yes, she was free to hook up with whomever she wanted.

Perhaps they didn't think this one through, as it didn't occur to them that, where there's potentially problematic shagging, a woman and female posters might ever not be the villains of the story.

Might we expect it to be some historic lesbian shagging in the sequel so there can't possibly be a man doing the dirty plot point work? It might get them too hot and bothered to post, which would be a plus I guess.

Pelotonia · 30/08/2026 20:30

You are being an absolute drama queen. I’m sure you were shocked, but your overreaction is endangering your whole marriage. Get a grip before it’s too late.
