AIBU to say 6:30am isn’t the middle of the night?

Shezz95 · 30/08/2026 06:52

Little backstory:

We have two children (4 and 4 months), I breastfeed so wake up with the baby but he’s a good sleeper and usually wakes up once around 4/5am. At the weekend my husband and I take turns having a lie in and getting up with the kids - in my eyes a lie in should be an hour ish so that we can still spend time together and do the morning dog walk

Yesterday I woke up at 6 to feed the baby and then went downstairs with them both around 6:20. Baby’s routine is having first nap on the dog walk 2 (ish) hours after waking. Husband is still asleep at 8:20 so I’m trying to get dressed and get kids sorted without waking him, but am also a bit annoyed as he will be out from 10am all day, so kids won’t see him

He wakes up and quickly gets dressed to come on the dog walk and then is out at the football from 10:30 - 3:30, he then gets home and says he’s popping to the pub as it’s his friends dads birthday. He comes back at about 6 and we do bedtime together - not really relevant but just that he’s not seen the kids much today and he usually does either football or cricket one day a weekend so we only have one family day

My 4 year old hasn’t been very well, very lethargic and doesn’t want to eat. This morning he comes in at 6:20 saying he’s thirsty and wants milk. Husband says we don’t get drinks in the middle of the night and that he can only have water. 4YO is crying more and more as he wants milk (probably hungry after not eating much). The baby then wakes up happily babbling.

I say it’s probably best to just wake up now as it’s usual wake up time anyway and he’s poorly etc. husband is trying to get him back to sleep - he’s not going to go as it’s 6:30 and he’s just getting more upset, so I go into the room and husband starts shooing me away and saying I give in to every little whim (I don’t, I’m usually the one disciplining/carrying out consequences). I said I’ll just wake up with them then. He calls me a martyr and starts telling me to fuck off and that I’m being fucking ridiculous etc. I feel like he just doesn’t want to wake up early with them even after hardly seeing them yesterday

AIBU to say 6:30am isn’t the middle of the night and our ill child should be allowed to have a glass of milk!?

The OP and her dh have made it up.

Why on earth are people still trying to stir up extra drama?

Everybody gets a bit grumpy on occasion.
There's no indication that he is a bad husband.

The child was not denied a drink.

The OP obviously knows him better than us.

End of thread.

He was denied the drink he wanted, whilst under the weather, is that your parenting style, because you don’t want to get up at a reasonable time?

Poor parenting IMO, but most of us are better than that, as this thread shows.

You can stop with the outrage now.
OP and her dh have kissed and made up.

Storm in a teacup.

your posts are demeaning and rude, this is an example of one!

You’re telling people to stop
replying to you, when you’re replying to them and deciding it’s the end of the thread! Give over, you’re embarrassing yourself!

@Shezz95 im glad you’ve made up, but you know this is not acceptable!

I just cannot fathom why anybody would go to the trouble of seeking out another poster's past posts.
I cannot fathom why anybody would do this.
Why they'd then declare they've no right to comment on anything else because of it.

It's ridiculous to me.

Now are you going to let this go or are we going to have this ridiculous back and forth all day?
I don't want that, do you?

When someone posts something as concerning and denigrating as you… hell yes I’m going to look at the background

and sure enough in your case…

So yes… posts like this are going to attract detractors

Whatever.

You seem obsessed with me, Dredging up my past posts, declaring my views to be unsound for some bizarre reason because of them, various posts which I consider to be personal attacks.

I can send you my picture on a dartboard if you like.

It isn't the middle of the night. It is probably too early for most at the weekend. He should have taken charge of the children as he had his lie in the previous day. I would not tolerate someone telling me to f*ck off.

user293948849167 · 30/08/2026 12:23

Can’t believe some of these responses.

Do people really make their 4 year olds stay in their room until a set time?! 4 year olds having to play independently in their rooms for 2 hours with no food and only water to drink?
People really think it’s ok to make a 4 year old “go back to sleep” at 6.20am when their normal wake up time is 6.30?
This child had been unwell too and probably hungry.

Is this parenting now? Do people realise small children are not robots with an on off switch and a timer?

When mine were little if they got up 10 minutes earlier than normal and wanted some milk of course I (or DH) would have just got up with them and started the day. Especially if they had not been well.
Sometimes we had snuggles in our bed if they got up super early but I’d have never forced them to stay in their room alone at 6.20am!

singthing · 30/08/2026 12:23

Shezz95 · 30/08/2026 07:14

He’s usually very hands on - does bed time, will take the kids to the park etc so I can have some time

4YO usually wakes up around 6/6:30 so there was no way he was going to go back to sleep and the baby was awake anyway

i realise the backstory was quite irrelevant really, think I was just annoyed he’d had the whole day to himself yesterday and was still hesitant with waking up with them

I know this is a long thread and I've only read your replies, but this one... my god.

Taking kids to the park and putting them in bed sometimes, listed in the context of being a favour to you, is not "hands on", let alone "very".

It is not even bare minimum. He is their father. He should be doing normal parenting without being asked, without doing it as a sop to you, without being asked.

It feels like you have been so conditioned to accept crumbs from this mediocre excuse that anything beyond that feels like a bounty from heaven. Please take a very hard, clear-eyed look at your situation, as it does not look remotely fair or equal from outside.

Well it seems all is well now.
I'm not telling anybody not to post at all, though, I can't stop them anyway!, just observing that because it's all OK now with the OP and her dh it's just people arguing amongst themselves.

No one is arguing with anyone besides everyone arguing with you

IsItOverYetPlease · 30/08/2026 12:16

Who are you talking about? Who's arguing?

OP has very clearly said it is not 'all well now'. She feels resentful and it's clear to her it's building up.

Why do you keep repeating the same stuff? It sounds like you're trying to control the narrative of the thread. Or is it that you just want the last word?

It's really weird.

LateSeptembersunshine · 30/08/2026 12:14

Another voice here saying it’s absolutely bonkers and cruel all these parents saying their children wouldn’t be allowed milk at 6.30am/not allowed out of their bedrooms etc.

Sounds more like a prison than a family home.

6.30am is a perfectly reasonable time for a 4 year old to wake up and milk is a perfectly normal morning drink. Especially as the child had been feeling poorly, poor kid was probably really craving some milk and there’s the dad trying to force him to go back to sleep.

I just could not be with a man like this.

Morethanalover · 30/08/2026 12:11

IsItOverYetPlease · 30/08/2026 11:51

The only person who seems to be trying to argue is you though. Most people on this thread have offered their experiences and hopefully given OP some food for thought about their financial structure, and whether this is an isolated incident or not. OP may not have read them yet, she may never read them, but you seem to be repeatedly telling people to stop posting which is odd given you repeatedly reply to people.

Pinkchickenwine · 30/08/2026 11:59

I can’t think of anything more normal than a four year old having a glass of milk at 6.30am! Just what does he expect from a four year old.

Just wanted to jump on and say thank you all for your responses - I’m heading off to do some shopping and leaving him with the boys and some expressed milk to figure it out

i think all in all he’s a good dad and partner but there are definitely some things I need to address. All these little things are adding up and resentment is building - I need to talk to him and nip it in the bud

again thank you all, I’m in a much better headspace now

I find having small children can be like ice in cracks. It might be some just adjusting to life as it is now or it may be deeper then that, you'll find out when you start properly talking about it together.

Good luck xx

Yes. I understand that but for a lot of people saying 'fuck off' is the equivalent of saying go away.

I guess the acceptable tone would be saying it in a sort of exasperated than aggressive tone.

Some people do swear in front of their children. I don't like it but they do. I'm not going to write them off as bad parents because of it, though I disapprove.

I don't think he's pretending he doesn't have a family at all.

He sounds as if he's a good father in other respects.

The OP and the dh seem to have made it up.
Just sounds like a minor spat to me.

I guess she (OP) won't be back.

No it isn’t
maybe in your world it is
and it was in front of young children 🙄

Not ridiculous at all. Many, many of us don't want the sort of relationship where it's acceptable to tell each other to fuck off. He wasn't saying it in jest so what tone would make it acceptable? The answer is no tone whatsoever and particularly not in front of a 4 year old.
And this hard done by individual had already had his lie in the day before. Not only that, he had also spent the rest of the day trying to pretend he didn't have a family.
