Like I must be exuding some pro social pheromones as a result

I am certain it's not because my behaviour or confidence have changed

Scrolls back up to change my vote 😳
I thought this was supposed to be a light-hearted, sarcastic thread about our changing hormones, but then I realised it was probably rage bait a back handed way to attack women. Either that or an astonishing lack of self awareness.

And I speak as someone who managed pmdd for most of my adult life. You can choose your behaviours, always.

You can choose your behaviours, always.

I don't agree. Some times your emotional state comes out in ways you can't hide.

If I'm in a bad mood, I develop what DD coined "the tone". I can have woken up in a bad mood about something completely inconsequential, know it's something inconsequential and that it's completely stupid, and be actively trying to not be in a bad mood about it, and yet "the tone" still gives me away and I get a "Whats wrong" from either DP or DD the moment I open my mouth to say "Shall I make a cup of tea". It's the first thing I've said that day, I've literally only just walked into the same room as them, and they've picked up on it within a sentance.

It's the same with DP. I can walk into the house after work and know she woke up with a migraine that morning, even though its been gone since lunchtime. Theres a little frown that she gets on migraine days, that doesn't disappear until the next day.

We give off a million little unconscious cues all the time that betray our emotional state. The people who know us best are best able to read them, no matter how hard we try to hide them.

Maybe you should increase the dose 👀

It was light hearted but I am not going to just yeah yeah yeah suggestions that I can't control myself and can't understand my own behaviour. I know the average iq is only 100 but surely most women here are intelligent enough to manage themselves.

It is not in fact feminist to insist that female midlife is unavoidably about helpless languishing in immature and selfish tantrums

I do know what total despair feels like but it has never been my family's duty to just put up with "her moods".

I’m dying for something to help me with the abject misery that is perimenopause. I have just requested a doctors appointment and got one for 6th October 😭 😭 😭

MummyWillow1 · 28/08/2026 16:11

People give back what you give them. I’ve been around call centres for years and the people who are genuinely lovely rarely get the ‘I want to speak to a manager’ calls. The sour faced misery always gets the ranty shouter.

HRT has made you more tolerant and nice.

Vallies · 28/08/2026 16:12

Either you are being nicer to them or you are doing less overthinking and not noticing every little slight.

HRT improves the mood. You’re probably easier to relate to.

I had no bother at all with hassle-free menopause (at 58), never mind any ‘perimenopause’ runup to it. Periods too were pretty damn easy all my fertile life.
But. But. At a creaky and sub-optimal 70, I do wonder is it too late to give HRT a go.
Cannot deny that once menstruation ended, the drop in hormones seems to have been a real catastrophe for my poor bod. Havent been truly right since then. (Feel more like 90, physically, and a bit of mental rejuvenation would be welcome)
Anyone near my age been a late adopter?

OP: it sounds like your happy hormones have reasserted themselves! Brava 💐

@Millytante theres lots of evidence now that starting HRT at any later age can bring a wealth of benefits - especially genitourinary but loads of others too - bones, digestion, mood - find yourself a menopause specialist GP and give it a go!

Aw, I think it’s so lovely and considerate of your hormones to have consulted with your IQ before deciding how to proceed with the process of perimenopause. Human biology will be delighted to learn it has been defeated by your superior intellect 😂

CurdinHenry · 28/08/2026 08:24

Of course it's a choice. You can choose to be pro social or anti social. This new subculture of revelling in the latter is really off-putting.

You clearly were a bit of an arsehole without realising, which is much worse than those of us who are self aware and try to be nice regardless :)

itsgettingweird · 28/08/2026 08:41

It’ll be a change people are seeing outwardly that you may not realise is there.

Im peri (no uterus so have no idea what stage of menopause I’m in but I had hysterectomy 5 years ago)

Everyone still thinks I’m lovely and kind and will do anything for anyone.

On the outside that’s what they see.

inwardly I have DILIGAF vibes and I’m sure they aren’t as well hidden as people are acting like they are 😂

Surely if you have no uterus you're simply menopausal??

Newgirls · 28/08/2026 17:44

I’ve got a couple of mates who I wish would take hrt. They’ve become very negative in the last year or so. Can’t say that out loud tho!

SillyGooseyGander · 28/08/2026 12:28

Completely. Seems 100% confident that she's always maintained a friendly outward demeanor, whilst posting here in a way that shows a decidedly unfriendly lack of empathy 🫠

An almost....perimenopausal grouchiness and lack of tolerance, one might say!

You don't seem to understand what causes menopause so I would suggest checking your self confidence in this whole area tbh.

Are you a robot? Either a robot or someone who has never suffered and truly doesn't get it. It's strange, I'd expect your way of thinking to come from men, not a fellow woman. You remind me of doctors when people who go to the docs for years with heavy, painful periods to be told 'that's being a women' when actually it turns out to be endometriosis.

I can tell you that pushing a year (into menopause) I had no sleep. Night after night. People who have had no sleep do get irritated by numpties around them or even with inanimate things, it's well known fact. It wasn't 'choosing', it alters the brain, medically proven! No more 'choosing' than having any other illness.

I don't think people who haven't experienced extreme sleep deprivation truly understand how debilitating it is. The feeling tearful is the pits. 💐

Dreadful. My only experience of sleep deprivation was with babies. I changed personality and attitude to life. If I experience sleep issues with menopause I will be straight on the HRT.
Im not on HRT yet at nearly 50 because I THINK I’m okay and coping with the changes.
But this thread is making me wonder if I'm actually a deluded super bitch with zero self awareness.

shockmethen · 28/08/2026 22:32

CurdinHenry · 28/08/2026 10:08

I am a self aware and positive person. I always have full awareness that everyone has their own struggles (my husband has a life limiting condition so I have compassion for other people in that I know what constant slight dredging terror feels like) and I have always said hello, smiled, tried hard to make others feel at ease. I think that's my responsibility in this world (and everyone's but I can only control myself). I don't accept "peri makes me feel bad so I can be a cow", that's bad craic.

So I am totally certain it isn't a change in my behaviour. I fear it's actually that humans are biologically ageist and I'm coming across as younger artificially.

Was interested to know if anyone else had felt the same.

But even if it did make you ‘artificially younger’ it wouldn’t be too enough of an extent to make anybody else instinctively or subconsciously treat you differently

It’s not like it would’ve suddenly made you 15 or 20 years younger biologically to them

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 28/08/2026 23:49

This made me smile,
Many years ago, when I was in my early 40s, I had to have a radical hysterectomy for health reasons.
Consequently, I was put on HRT as I’d had my ovaries removed, or otherwise I would’ve gone straight into automatic menopause.
My son was at university at the time, and when he came home for the summer break, apparently he has told me since, when he went back to university in the autumn, he told all his friends that they ought to try to get their mothers to have hysterectomies as I was a completely different person, and much much nicer!
30 years later and I am still on HRT. Best thing that ever happened to me.

how come everyone's being so damn charming to me then?!?!?

They are all tiptoeing round you on eggshells trying to avoid provoking you, if your responses here are anything to go by.

When are you next due a check up? Can you bring it forward?

Alwayschillyatnight · 29/08/2026 00:08

Disturbia81 · 28/08/2026 09:08

Agreed. Honestly can’t stand this peri obsession and everything must be peri and woe is me.. we live our lives going through hormonal stuff.

A year ago I was suicidal. Had been for a year and getting lower and lower for a couple before that. Antidepressants did nothing, because it was hormones.

After 10 months on HRT im happier than I have been in years. I honestly didnt realise how low I was getting.

Its not woe is me. For some of us it's fucking life threatening.

And im not angry at you. Im angry at how long I suffered and how much I lost before anybody gave me the thing that actually helped.
