The classic where I'm from is a beef patty with a bun, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, tomato sauce, a fried egg, and a slice of tinned beetroot.

Mil served us naked hamburger patties without buns or anything but garden salad and crisps first time I ate dinner there. (She tried to make a child friendly meal for my 7 yr old.)

Potatoes have gone up in price recently. They used to be cheaper than pasta or rice but not so much anymore. Maybe that explains the shift a bit? I like and eat potatoes but my "quick and cheap" meal is pasta pesto as it's cheapest.

Romanians like to put tomato ketchup on their pizza. Maybe they eat their burgers in a strange way as well?!

I was super confused when I first ordered a hamburger in Japan and it came with rice and a sauce - no bun, no salad etc. Over the years I've really come to like them that way and it makes me a bit sad how common American style burgers are in Japan now. Anyway, I often have hamburgers with no bun and maybe some veggies on the side but that's because I try to keep carbs to a minimum for my weight.

I still serve it without a bun and with homemade chips and peas for a midweek dinner. Honestly seems more healthy that with white ultra-processed bread.

I think we eat in quite an old fashioned way from comments here. When and why did everyone change from potatoes and steamed veg plus something else as the basis for most meals? We have probably at least four meals a week like this. There's a rhythm and not having to think about it and you know that fibre and vitamins are being eaten and crap minimised. Plus the slight tedium of it means that you are less likely to overeat.

I guess I assumed everyone else just plods on with what they know for the everyday. I can't imagine having the brain capacity to change it.

My favorite burger is at a local place. The burger, ketchup, Dijon mustard, lettuce, tomato, grilled pineapple, sliced jalapeños, bacon, and provolone cheese. Comes with house made crisps or chips. Heavenly.

Make that a veggie burger and I think it's my favourite option so far. Proper comfort food.

I made burgers without a bun as I didn't have it and the outrage from my son. So I'm guessing NOT the Netherlands
