So angry what is wrong with some parents

My dd14 was supposed to be sleeping at a friend's tonight. They have had an argument and she said let's just leave it and go to sleep her friend told her she had to leave so she's walked home and just come in the door at gone 10pm. I can't believe the mum didn't step in and do anything or let me know and I would've got her. I've said to dd why didn't you call me but she just shrugged and said she was fine walking and didn't want to stand outside waiting for me. Its about a 10 minute walk. I don't let her out on her own at this time of night. As a parent i would have stepped in and can't believe this other mum did nothing.

Did you mean to type 4 not 14 ?

2O26 · 19/08/2026 01:37

Either the Mom drives your DD home or the Mom and her DD walks your DD home (since it was only a 10 minute walk). That would have been the polite thing to do.

Indenialagain · 19/08/2026 01:31

The lengths people will go to these days to avoid actually disciplining their children. If your DD knows she is not allowed out by herself at that time of night, then she is the one who has broken your rules. So don’t deflect onto the other mother, just parent your child better.

trotterstrot · 19/08/2026 01:13

Amazing what some fathers are let off for. So much justifiable anger here but directed at the mum.

SquirrelGG · 19/08/2026 01:08

She's home, she's safe. It's over, move on.

Are you ok? The kids had an argument not the parents.

Well the kids need to grow up then!

Is all it takes for some of the worst things to happen. Unless you've never been aware of tragic cases that involved similar circumstances.

Unfortunately tragic cases happen in broad daylight too.

I don’t think we do our teens any favours at all by being over-protective and treating them like much younger children.

She’s a 14 year old child walking home at 10pm in the dark?

She’s 14 not seven! It would be perfectly fine in some areas and not in others. Ten minutes down the road from your friend’s house doesn’t sound particularly treacherous to me.

My dd used to come home from sports practice by herself at this time of night on a regular basis when she was fifteen.

The other mum should have given you a quick text but it was up to your dd to ring you at her age Op, so I think you are over-reacting a bit, sorry. You could have met your dd half way if she had called you to say she was setting off.

Who has an argument when their child has a mate sleeping over?? Well these idiots obviously. Grow up you utter fannies.

DownLoww · 19/08/2026 00:21

Im more shocked someone would allow their child to sleep over a friends house that they don’t know the parent of and dont have any of their contact details

For 10 mins?

The mum apparently walked in bedroom when friend was shouting at dd to get out and dd was crying and just shouted whats going on and when friend said she wanted dd to leave mum just tutted huffed and walked out. So I assume she heard it all neither girl is calm or quiet.

The mum sounds useless. I wouldn’t let your dd stay there again. Appalling to let a child walk home at 10pm alone in the dark.

Equally, your dd needs to take responsibility for her own safety. She should have called you immediately as she became aware she was leaving.

MCF86 · 19/08/2026 00:18

I assume the parent wouldn't have expected her to walk home if she wasn't allowed to.

What do you expect your Facebook message to achieve?

LBFseBrom · 19/08/2026 00:11

I expect she went quickly and the other girl's mum didn't know until she was gone. Maybe still doesn't know!

The important thing is you daughter is OK.

A ten minute walk before 10pm is not unreasonable for a fourteen year old, they all do it. I would only worry if she was walking along lonely, isolated roads with not much light.

I hope the girls make up, these things happen.

mamajong · 19/08/2026 00:09

Sorry but this is a 14 year old, old enough to know your rules and boundaries and that she should have called you, its her you should be annoyed with. If it was a younger child yanbu but at 14 she is able to follow your rules. Personally i wouldnt have an issue with mine walking 10mins home at 10pm but a) they would know to message thats what they were doing and b) thats based on where i live and my knowledge of the route home.

NorthernPaws · 19/08/2026 00:05

Just to balance out the many saying 10 pm isn’t late… I wouldn’t want my daughter that age out at that time walking alone, even for 10 mins.
I’m in a city though. Maybe you others are in a village? Though I can imagine pros and cons for both.

takealettermsjones · 18/08/2026 23:59

I think there's a disconnect here.

You allowed your daughter to sleep over at someone else's house without knowing the adults' contact details - thus believing your daughter could be left to manage her own affairs.

Then when it went wrong, you blamed the adult in the house - thus believing your daughter should not have been left to manage her own affairs.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/08/2026 23:53

The other mum should have phoned you to advise of the incident and that your dd would be coming home.

Ohnobackagain · 18/08/2026 23:51

@fumingrightnow1 the other parent may not know your daughter is not allowed to walk home alone, or she may have assumed she is, if she allows her own DD to be out alone. I understand why you’re upset though.

And?? My DD used to do a 10 min walk from ATC at 14. They finished at 10

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 18/08/2026 23:48

Gosh, must have been a pretty bad argument.

I am with you, OP, I would have made sure she got home safely. I wouldn't like my DD out that late alone at that age. I might let my DS.. possibly.. if he had his bike with him, but not a young girl on foot.

I would have called you or taken her home myself. I wouldn't have made up a bed elsewhere as that would be extremely awkward.

I hope your DD is OK and there's no more problems. Girls of this age can take hings too far Nd be very cruel and it's so constant these days with phones and social media :(

I wouldn't be letting her stay there again, if they do make up.

Jardenalia · 18/08/2026 23:41

You know the phrase ‘Hell is other people?’ When my DC were teens it was ‘Hell is my DC’s friends’ parents’. So many inadequate adults out there. I’m glad your DD is safe OP.

Idontknownowwhat · 18/08/2026 23:40

Nobody is covered in glory here are they!
DDs mate chucking her out just before 10pm.
The mum.
DD for not calling you to say "mum im coming home" messaging, or anything.

Even if the girls make up, please dont let your DD stay there again. I can't imagine ever thinking a teenager could leave my house in the dark alone. It have taken them home because if they were due to be at my house theyre my responsibility. Id be annoyed too

Ladybyrd · 18/08/2026 23:39

Its not that late

What?!!
