That's nonsense. I ignored most covid advice re: one way walking systems, useless masks, only going out once a day because it was all performative rubbish, didn't report neighbours with visitors etc etc However, it's obvious that lighting a bbq in a drought is a really stupid idea - if you're in an area where it hasn't rained for almost 60 days like we are.

After seeing what happened in Stourbridge this week I'd definitely be reporting anyone lighting one simply because I dont want to risk our house burning down.

My nexus door neighbours but one do this! White billowing smoke and the stink of whatever the fuel is. We have narrow gardens so it goes everywhere. They do it all year round and to be fair, it only lasts a couple of hours. I was planning to sit and read in the garden this afternoon but couldn’t.

It’s not actually to do with the type of bbq though, it’s the way in which they’re used. Disposable bbqs are often used directly on grass, and are either left behind or thrown away while still burning/smouldering.
Whereas normal bbqs are raised, tend to be used on patios and are more likely to be properly extinguished.
Ours is a gas BBQ, on a huge patio. The chances of a spark igniting anything around us is as close to 0
as you can get.
Irrelevant anyway, we can’t use it as it’s raining.

Disposable bbqs are often put directly on the ground, then not put out properly befire disposal

Proper bbqs are often raised

It's less likely to be the cause of the fire, because people often use disposable straight on grass, leave it behind still hit, dispose of in bins still hot, aren't near water etc

Then "BARBECUES ARE BANNED" are the same people who were squawking that you were only allowed out for 30 minutes during lockdown....

They just make up rules and shout

Pretty sure they can still cause a fire. The fire doesn't know whether the BBQ is going to be thrown away after use, does it?

I’m pretty sure it’s disposal bbqs have been banned, not all bbqs? Having said that, I wouldn’t light one in our garden at all right now as it’s tiny and we back onto a very dry, parched field and trees to match. A scary amount of the country around by us is either currently on fire or has been on fire in recent days.

FWIW OP, I dried stuff inside on Friday due to there being smoke in the air from a fire 10 miles away and it dried within about 5 hours.

Trouble is there are a lot of stupid people out there!

Non disposable bbqs are still ok though obviously use with caution.

Is your issue the lack of available bedding for you dd, or that you’re in fear of fire?

Bbqs are safe if you arent stupid.
Lighter fuel on a bbq is stupid at any time.

Can't help with the BBQ or the current wet sheets. But when one of mine went through a bedwetting stage for several years I bought some rubber-backed washable pads from Boots, they were aimed at adults. If you can still get them, they're brilliant. Much better than puppy pads, better than waterproof sheets. Held a whole wee (even for 7 year old) and I could just swap one out for a dry one in seconds. And because they're relatively small, you can buy half a dozen and still fit them in your cupboard, so even if three or four are in the wash you still have a couple to get you through the night. Even went in the tumble dryer. And easy to dry over a radiator/clothes horse indoors if necessary unlike sheets. I highly recommend them, if you can find some. They were definitely worth the money.

I wonder if we're neighbours. The people at the back of us have lit a BBQ and me and DH have been idly pondering for the past 30 minutes if it sets anything on fire would they be liable to pay.

Bloody ridiculous behaviour and completely unnecessary given the alert and how dry everything is.

People a few doors down had one all I could do was try and keep an eye and fill up some water cans and buckets to douse my property and have my hose at the ready. It's so stressful .
