AIBU to end things over his constant pointless lies?

Been seeing someone for a few months and I’ve now caught him out on at least 3 stupid lies.

  1. he told me he had a dog, a husky called Bear. He would talk about this dog almost daily “I took Bear to the beach today” “just been watching tv with bear” “bear has vets tonight at 4pm” etc. first time I went to his house there were no signs of a dog at all so I said “where is bear?” He looked confused, then panicked and then said “oh he died unfortunately” so I said “when?? Because late last night you said you were walking him early this morning …”. He said he died last night so I said “and you never mentioned it? Come on …” so he admitted he didn’t have a dog but bear did exist, it’s his sisters dog. This also turned out to be a lie.
  2. He told me he had joined the Conservative Party and was considering running as a councillor. This turned out to be a complete lie.
  3. he told me today that he had gone to see the Monet exhibition in the local art gallery. Yet tonight he was on the phone and I heard him confirm with his boss that he had worked a full day today starting at 9am and finishing at 5. Afterwards I said “thought you were at art gallery today?” So he stumbled on his words and said “oh - no - well yes I was but that was yesterday, I got my days mixed up” he literally called me at 2pm saying he had just left the art gallery!! I was meant to be staying at his house tonight but I’ve come home telling him I can’t be doing with the constant stupid lies. AIBU

Who's the weirdo 1%? For what reason do you think she should continue to date a fantasist and liar?

Yes I've never seen a straight 100% vote yet!

🙄 God forbid. Seriously, something wrong with people, by that, I mean you.

You’re allowed to dump someone for their political beliefs you know 🙄. Not unusual not to want fo date someone who you feel holds fundamentally different views to you.

As a child I had two 'friends' who did this and it made me uncomfortable as I knew they were lying but didn't know how to call them out. One of my dds also had a friend like this - her father was also clearly a fantasist too. Is it a maladaptive way of dealing with trauma, maybe?

To be honest I can't imagine why you would even need to ask MN about this guy!

Yes my DD had a friend like this primary school too. One day she said they were moving house so she would have to change schools as well. My DD was quite upset. I happened to bump in to her dad at school drop off and said, oh I hear you're leaving us!...etc....he looked at me confused and his DD looked mortified lol.
This was just one of countless lies. It's annoying but fascinating at the same time. Presumably it was just attention seeking?? Hopefully she's grown out of it but even as a child my DD didn't do this so perhaps it's something that stays with you in to adulthood...?

CoffeeBotherer · 16/08/2026 06:25

He either has a mental issue (I mean a proper clinical issue) or something in his past that's making him live in a fantasy world, perhaps some trauma that he shies away from confronting.

Unless you're in deep and are willing to stand by while he gets counseling I'd get out of this.

Let him know that you can't have a serious relationship if you can't trust what he's saying and also that he should talk to somebody about this because he'll not be able to hold down a relationship or even a job in the long run.

SunnyRedSnail · 16/08/2026 06:18

@DownTheJohn I'd have dumped him at the first lie about the dog.

Run a mile. Ref flag.

geumsun · 15/08/2026 23:13

I'd love to know the psychology behind compulsive lying like this. Is it insecurity? Trying to sound more interesting than one is?

Regardless, bin him.

Yes, me too, it's fascinating! Why do they do this? It's so odd

Tell him you can’t Bear to be with someone who is at best an eccentric liar and at worst a deluded fantasist, so you are ending it now before you waste any Monet on him.

And then block…

Bravo 🤣🤣🤣! OP, You must include that you are quite conservative in who you share your life with! 😂

HollyhocksandPeons · 16/08/2026 01:47

Be careful - sounds abnormal, so it could be dangerous to call crazy out, so maybe just make up a reason and run, not necessarily exposing the lies?

Trollydollies · 16/08/2026 01:42

I met a guy like this once. The problem was that he interspersed his lies with truthful statements so it was difficult to pin him down.

He said he had 2 degrees. (True)
He told me he was a bus driver (True) and he lived in a 4 bed detached house (True) which he owned.(False, his parents owned it )
He had a daughter who lived with his parents (True/False she was at boarding school)
He said the mother of his child was in a psychiatric unit (False she was in prison)
He said his dad owned a racehorse. (True)
He said he had a cleaner provided by his parents. (True)
He said that next-door's cat was always coming in the house and making a mess (False, they didn't have a cat and neither did he)
He said he picked up his daughter and took her to school on the bus he drove because the bus went past the school (False)

I put a stop to the relationship - such as it was - after a couple of months because my head was spinning.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/08/2026 23:24

Well for me he was dumped at “conservative party” but seriously wow, he sounds quite ill I’d say.

🙄 God forbid. Seriously, something wrong with people, by that, I mean you.

MyLuckyPeachOtter · 16/08/2026 00:46

You would be unreasonable to stay with him!!!

dh280125 · 16/08/2026 00:43

Why isn’t this a post telling us you already broke up???

DeftGoldHedgehog · 16/08/2026 00:30

Very odd indeed. Sounds like he couldn't lie straight in bed.

I'm surprised you even need to ask! Surely you don't want to be in a relationship and never have any idea whether your partner is telling the truth or not.

Happyjoe · 15/08/2026 23:58

I'd have dumped him for number 2, even without all the lies!
Nah, life is far far too short to spend with people like this.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 15/08/2026 23:57

I used to work with someone like this who made up an entire family that had various disasters that meant he often had to leave early and arrive late. Everyone was very understanding until we discovered none of them existed and it was all a complete fantasy! Utter weirdo, and actually got a bit scary when he was found out.

I'd give this one a very wide berth OP, not least because you'll never be able to belive a word he says.

LifesabagofRevels · 15/08/2026 23:46

Run. I had a friend who tuned out to be a compulsive liar. I regret not cutting her off before she did damage to my reputation.

JetFlight · 15/08/2026 23:36

I met someone when I was a teen who did similar. Except in their case, they felt sorry for their neighbour whose dog had died so they let the neighbour borrow theirs. At least this person was a teen trying to make their life seem more interesting. This man? Forget this relationship.

summitfever · 15/08/2026 23:32

Run. A. Way.

Shaynac · 15/08/2026 23:32

They’re pointless but aren’t small. The dog one is truly bizarre - to make up a large dog, give it a name, make up anecdotes about it, and then claim it’s dead. That’s out and out fantasist.

Temporaryname158 · 15/08/2026 23:30

Run for the hills. I didn’t, his lies were just the start before the anger and violence started. He can’t be trusted

sunnyfeet · 15/08/2026 23:30

He sounds really weird
