To find the temperature today unbearable?

In sw London. It’s meant to be cooler but it just feels so humid outside and my house is retaining the heat from the last few days no matter what we do. Fed up of feeling sweaty and lethargic all day.

Still disgustingly humid in our house today. Thanks for the reminders on the dehumidifier. I’ve switched ours on downstairs. We’ve gone out for the afternoon and it doesn’t feel too bad outside

London was horrendous today. Supposed to be cooler than yesterday but it felt even more sticky and unpleasant than ever. Low 20s forecast from middle of next week - may even get down to 21 by Friday! That would be fabulous 😍

21 is a decent day Ne Scotland
Those mid 30s temps must be literally hell on earth.
Sympathies 🥵

When we first moved to Australia, we had no air con or insulation. I found the first summer hard when it was hitting 40 plus each day and not dropping below 33 at night. Then a neighbour told me to dampen all the sheets at bedtime and to wash and wring out our PJs before putting them on wet. Open the windows and let the air evaporate the water from the fabric all night. Worked like a charm.

If it helps at all, you very quickly acclimatise to the heat if you experience it regularly, which it sounds as though the UK will if climate change gets even worse. We are an adaptable species or we would never have lasted this long. Another good tip is to take a couple of those wine bottle coolers - the ones you freeze then put on a bottle of white to chill it quickly - and wear them on your wrists. Cooling that pulse point cools your entire body very quickly.

And a PP is correct that a dehumidifier is better than air con if you can only have one of them. It warms the air by several degrees in winter and cools it by a similar amount in the summer.

The thing is too that dehumidifiers are available but air conditioning is sold out everywhere!

I actually got the idea trying to keep a pair of gerbils comfortable! They are from the arid desert not the tropics and are miserable over 50% humidity. As am I.

Ilovemyshed · 16/08/2026 09:35

Its dreadful, although we are lucky to live in the country and the house stays fairly OK due to lots of insulation and shading.
At night I go round and open windows and doors front and back and sides and it soon pushes the hot air out.

Roll on autumn.

Think we all need to get a grip. Yes it’s hot but in a month everyone will be moaning about fog then frost. Why can’t you all just go with it enjoy it while we’ve got it switch on those fans open those windows. It’ll soon be winter then you’ll all be moaning it’s cold.

Nonsense. It’s not just hot, it’s unbearable, hard to sleep and impossible to concentrate. House is almost inhabitable from 2-6pm - either I go in to work (a/c bit not that effective- I work for family business so I’m flexible w hours) or have to sit in shade in the garden.
So glad it’s cooling down.
Was in central London yesterday which was at least a couple of degrees hotter than the suburbs too.

Lentilcakes · 16/08/2026 09:11

Last few days have been awful. Was still hot last night. Bedroom this morning was 22c despite window open all night and curtains open too. Def staked time for it to cool off. Our house was built in 2014 to retain heat ffs! It’s lovely in winter, but summer is a write-off.

Americanstyle · 16/08/2026 09:10

I have struggled with motivation throughout the whole of this summer, just no energy or motivation to do anything in this heat and sick and tired of feeling exhausted and sweaty! I stupidly started some much needed painting yesterday and managed an hour before I packed it in and then regretted even starting it as it took so long to tidy up!

Thank god it’s cooler today and praying that it doesn’t come back too soon, but I have heard whisperings of heatwaves in September 😬

I used to absolutely love summer. Until this year. I'm also in London and it is absolutely unbearable. Headaches, can't cook, can't eat, just fed up of the humidity and constant lethargic feeling.

I will never ever complain about the cold or rain ever again. I will truly enjoy the colder wetter months. So there's a silver lining.

I could have written that myself! Completely agree with every word. I have also vowed never to complain about the cold or rain again after this horrible, relentless, energy-sapping summer. I have done NOTHING since the end of May and it feels like forever.

17 degrees where I am in Cumbria. I’d love some heat.

17 degrees is fine. Be careful what you wish for.

SecretLocker · 16/08/2026 08:55

My shrubs and plants outside are dying or burnt due to the hosepipe ban and no rain.
My houseplants are light-deprived and miserable as we're keeping all the blackout blinds down throughout the house until late in the evening when the sun sets.

It's all very well saying why can't we just go with it and enjoy it while we've got it if it's making you feel ill! Plenty of people (myself included) have medical conditions or need to take medication that makes them far more sensitive to extreme heat. It never ceases to amaze me how unfeeling some people are towards others inability to handle hot weather.

Exactly.
I’m really struggling with breathing after lung surgery, I’m starting to wonder if I have a chest infection looming.
For May, many people this weather is hideous and possibly life-threatening.

Have any of you in the south had a weekend away in the north to escape?

I'm in Cumbria and we've had a fairly normal summer. It's been a bit drier and warmer than usual but nothing like the south and midlands. I've regularly been wearing jeans and jumpers as well as shorts and t shirts. and this morning it's cool and rainy.

When I had a weekend in London in June I got sick of sweating and having to search for air con.

I do know people who have had escape breaks to colder areas of the UK but work commitments have made this difficult for others. I suspect that seasonal internal migration will become a regular feature

TheJuryIsOut · 16/08/2026 08:42

Come and live in the North East, it's not that warm here 😫

ilovesooty · 16/08/2026 08:40

Friend of mine moved to just outside London from Yorkshire. His wife constantly whined about the Yorkshire weather. She's apparently now whining about the heat down south. My sympathy is limited.

Bring it on !
At least you have control, ie another layer if cold.
It's passed being enjoyable now.

Yesterday in London/SE was awful. I’m hoping today will feel better!

livelovebreathe · 16/08/2026 07:21

Yeah we've been in London over the weekend and there's just no air. I've been walking around with my hand held fan permanently attached to my face 😆

This! I defy anyone who has been as ill as I have to “get a grip”! I’m having to have a blood test to determine why I am uncomfortable when it’s anything over high teens in temperature but I never complain about the cold. My health is generally good until we get to summer and then mentally and physically I’m wiped out with exhaustion. It’s also really badly affecting farmers and wildlife and back home on holiday last week ten fire engines were needed to deal with a field fire not far from where we were staying.

I’d happily spend my life savings at this point

I’m waiting for a small inheritance to come through once all the official stuff takes it’s time and yes, it is going to be spent on proper air conditioning for parts of our house! I haven’t another summer in me I don’t think because I’ve not coped since May. The living room and bedrooms will be priority as the lack of sleep the heat causes makes it even more impossible to function during the most gruelling months of the year.

Nobody who suffers in hot weather will look back wistfully on this. If you live in the south east you are truly lucky to be able to think of enjoy living life at these temperatures. I'm glad some people can.

It's already a lot cooler in Yorkshire. It didn't get above 18 all day and it's 12 now. It's going to be even cooler over the coming week. Thank goodness I'm going away the week after.

I was on holiday in Yorkshire the week before last. It was amazing to be cooler. The grass was GREEN!
