AIBU to feel annoyed after a mum's sarcastic supermarket comment?

Msidontknow · 15/08/2026 17:23

In a local supermarket getting some bits - it's quiet and I'm taking my time. I come around to turn into the other isle and a young toddler age 2-3 is waiting/hanging around making it difficult for me to move. I wait for him to see me to move - I don't say anything or do anything as I'm not in a rush and he was just being a child - the mum sees me waiting, calls him over and says loudly 'he's not a mind reader'. I was taken back and lost my chance to respond which would've sounded something like ' I'm sorry for not rushing your son and waiting patiently for him to see me'.

The thought did cross my mind would she have said this if I was a different ethnicity?

Maybe it's the heat or the rudeness but I'm annoyed at the sarky comment towards me for just trying to be nice.

Why not say ‘excuse me little fella’ or something? I hate when people just stand there. Use your voice!

What the hell has ethinicity got to do with it…

I am of Mediterranean ethnicity and yes there absolutely is. I get the odd remark but nothing like the constant drip, drip, brown or black friends do.

Not understanding that the colour of your skin affects how you are treated in the UK is the epitome of white privilege.

I have brown and black friends and lots of family members too.
None of tthem have experienced the constant 'drip drip' remarks you refer to...maybe because they dont go looking for them.

No one is denying racism exists, but rude people, like the woman in the supermarket, are just that....rude.
And amazingly they come in all colours too.

She probably just felt a bit embarrassed that he’d got in the way. You could just have smiled and said “no problem “

Yes, women should smile in the face of rudeness.

Assuming for a moment that she was white and you are not, no she was just being snippy. I was in a supermarket last week when a family and a trolley blocked an aisle I wanted to walk up. I waited for them to move, they looked at me like I was an idiot. I asked them to move, they asked my why I couldn't walk round them, ignoring the fact that they had moved as was asking them to move.

It got a lot worse than that including being asked nose to nose if I had any children, if was unable to have children, if I was trans and they finally walked off with him calling me a dyke and I offered to introduce him to my 6ft 2 husband waiting outside.

We were all white.

This thread is a shit show of replies, well done to the posters who have a brain and have put nice ones.

I can’t believe some people don’t understand why someone might be feeling vulnerable about their ethnicity in the UK right now.

I say that as a white woman. OP never said the woman was a raging racist, she mentioned her ethnicity might have been a factor.

Show some empathy even if you don’t agree. I hate this forum sometimes.

WTF are you going to on on about? Are certain ethnicities know for their mind reading skills?

You need to swear and be unpleasant?

I think there’s a difference between being black and looking Mediterranean when it comes to facing racism

BackOfTheMum5net · 15/08/2026 19:33

If you had asked her toddler to move, you’d just as likely have learned she’s part of the “Don’t you tell my child what to do!” brigade!

And it’s entirely possible she felt entitled to be rude to you because of race. We’ll never know.

As with many weird encounters in life, it’s more about her than you and best forgetting.

I dont doubt that some black/white/brown people have experienced racist remarks, just as some gay people have experienced homophobic remarks and females misogynistic remarks, but pinning a plain old rude remark on one of the above is simply looking to be the victim.

Some people are not racist, homophobic or exist...just bloody rude.

Completely agree. My comment wasn’t aimed at the poster.

ForPeaceSake · 15/08/2026 19:30

@Msidontknow Something very very similar happened to me. A woman and her family were blocking the aisle but only for a moment so I waited until they moved and as I passed the woman said 'Say excuse me' in a very rude voice. I do find people are sometimes more confident in being rude to me than to my peers who do not look and dress as I do. When I answer them back in the same accent and tone they act shocked. They think they're picking on an easy, docile target.

The woman was rude, but don't let it spoil your weekend.

What a strange thing to say, I’m white and have experienced plenty of racist comments. The OP didn’t mention her ethnicity so she could well be white?

Edited

Don't be disingenuous. Some ethnicities are known for being on the receiving end of micro aggressions like this more often than others.

HollyhocksandPeons · 15/08/2026 19:27

2-3 y.o.perambulating in the isles? Utter savages. Should be firmly fastened either to a parent or to a buggy and not under our feet!

Why on earth would you pander to somebody rude? Just ignore. I hate toddlers being left to wander around supermarkets.

Fucking hell. She was rude. Mumsnet is full of these replies lately which explains why the general public are getting ruder also.

Betazoid. Definitely would have reacted differently to a Betazoid.

Sounds like she was stressed about shopoung w toddler - maybe someone had been particularly impatient with the child previously - and was rude. Im not sure I see how yr ethnicity is relevant, but I'm white so havent had to hear a lifetime of crappy racist comments.

they should put their brat in the trolley then..no need for them to be roaming unattended getting in the way of people...

So you would say what the woman said to another person whilst your toddler was blocking an aisle and the person was patiently waiting, honestly if she said excuse me to the child the mum would probably have an issue with that too!
i honestly think I live in another dimension and no wonder Glasgow is known as being friendly as most people would either be taken aback or get a slap if a stranger spoke to them like that

So you would say what the woman said to another person whilst your toddler was blocking an aisle and the person was patiently waiting,

What are you going on about?

I quoted the OP who said "I was taken back and lost my chance to respond"

Hence me mentioning all the other MNetters who say bugger all due to being 'taken aback' and 'aghast' etc but can't wait to run to Mumsnet.

How they advocate for their own children is beyond me.

Hope that's a bit clearer?

No I don't actually live alone. Family of 4. I'm not stewing on anything. Was just disheartened at the time. But onwards and upwards.

But it seems you were only disheartened because you perceived her to be racist, rather than just a rude or embarrassed Mum?

She didn't face racism though, she faced a woman who allowed her kid to block the aisle and then get shirty about it....big difference.
