AIBU to think my friend should just accept I am marrying her ex?

I’m 35 and have been with my partner for 4 years. We actually met again completely by chance after many years of not seeing each other, hit it off, were messaging for a week or so and decided to go on a date and he asked to meet up for a coffee and a walk. Before we had even been on our first date, I told my friend that we had hit it off messaging and we’re going for coffee because I wanted to be upfront with her.

He had been her boyfriend at university when they were around 18–20. They were together for about 2 years. They broke up nearly 20 years ago and obviously people change enormously between 18 and 36.

When I told her, after a couple time of meeting him that we are officially seeing each other I specifically asked if she had a problem with it. She said no, so I took that at face value. I wasn’t sneaking around or getting into a relationship with her ex behind her back. I actually even told her before we’d been on the first date.

We’ve now been together for 4 years. We moved in together & he proposed earlier this year and I said yes. We’re very happy, are buying a house together and would like to have children. We have a wedding date set for next June, invitations have gone out and our university friends have been absolutely lovely about it , RSVPs, messages, people booking hotels etc. They’re genuinely excited for us.

When I told this particular friend about the engagement, she said, “Oh, are you going to marry my ex?” I reminded her that we’d been together for 4 years and that I had told her about us from the very beginning. She then said that she’d only said she had no problem with it because she didn’t think we would last.
That has really thrown me.

I completely understand that she might have complicated feelings about it. I’m not trying to tell her how she should feel. But at some point, surely you have to accept that this was a relationship from university when you were 18 years old?

It’s not as though they were together for 15 years, were engaged, had children or had some huge life together. They were university sweethearts for a couple of years, nearly 20 years ago. She has since married, had children and divorced. He and I have now built an actual adult life together over the last four years.

And honestly, I find it particularly difficult because I had exactly the reverse situation myself. One of my friends married someone I had dated at university. I was 18. They got together years later and eventually married and have children. I genuinely didn't have an issue with it. I thought, “We were teenagers at university, life moved on,” and I was happy for them.

So I’m struggling with why I’m apparently supposed to feel guilty now.

I also wonder whether this friendship may simply be worth losing if this is something she can’t move past. Obviously I’d rather not lose a friend, but I don’t think I can spend the rest of my life feeling that I’ve done something wrong by marrying my partner.

All our other university friends seem completely happy for us and are looking forward to the wedding. Nobody else seems to see this as some enormous betrayal.

AIBU to think she needs to let this go? I can understand her feeling upset, but I don’t think she gets a veto over a relationship that started nearly 20 years after theirs ended.

Or am I being completely insensitive about the fact that, regardless of how long ago it was, he will always be “her ex” to her?

OP, you seem to have a very poor insight into human relationships and behaviour. When posters try to explain you simply deny and denigrate them along with your friend.

If anyone on the thread comes across as “insane” and “immature” it’s you.

I’d wager the reason for your friend’s multiple WhatsApp paragraphs is the same for the length of this thread: you simply refuse to see life from anyone’s perspective but your own. She may have repeatedly tried to explain it to you as have posters here - and similarly failed.

Ok having actually read all of your posts now op yes I think you are someone who is quite mean!! And it doesn’t sound like you think much of your ‘friend’.. she doesn’t need a friend like you in her life tbh is my thought!

True she doesn’t need to be my friend my isn’t going to end without her no one is forcing her to be my friend.

She could utilise this energy to focus on her own children maybe rekindle with their father….as in the man she was once married to and had children with he’s remarried now yet I don’t think he’s been bombarded with messages but now she suddenly cares about someone she last knew at 20 yrs old who she hasn’t kept in touch with since then it’s not as though they remained friends or anything he got on with his life so did she.

Your friend is probably over him, she has moved on with her life. It might be awkward for her to see him for the first time after being dumped.

This one line alone makes me think you aren’t quite as reasonable as you come across during the rest of the post “He and I have now built an actual adult life together over the last four years”
there’s something you’re not saying with that line; which I think might be quite mean..

however - you are correct that you can marry whom you like.. you don’t say how they ended.. if I was her I would feel a bit uncomfortable about it probably. You make a lot of effort to minimise their relationship in your post- uni sweethearts etc. I wonder if it was more than that for her…

Not minimising their relationship I’m just saying they weren’t in a 20 year marriage with children she has since been married divorced and had children I’m not sure why she cares about someone she last saw at 20 years old. I gave her a chance to tell me how she felt I was honest with her from the jump almost 5 years ago now she’s saying she didn’t think it would last etc. get a grip it’s tow consenting adults what were we meant to do just go for coffee then never meet again albeit we both had a good time and wanted to get to know one another and see where things would go.

But your whole thread is literally asking people if you are being unreasonable… that’s the point of AIBU. But you refuse to give details and come back with frankly batshit responses to people. Utterly weird behaviour which only reinforces my belief that you are not handling the friend situation sanely either.

Your being defensive but you literally said he didn't remember someone he was in a 2 year relationship with. Even if it was on and off - he would remember. People are just saying it's implausible that he forgot. People aren't saying they should rekindle their relationship.

True very implausible I agree I’ll scold him when he gets back from cycling this afternoon

Rightly so because this is a jury and I’m required to post every detail verbatim. It is my post not forcing people to interact last time I checked.

I agree with this. Two years at aged 18-20 , you f* like rabbits and he supposedly can't recall it at all. As if.

True I’ll offer to rekindle then so they can fuck like rabbits one last time for the road. Maybe she’ll stop being so sad then

He remembers, hes just not admitting to it.

Far easier for him to just brush it off, and shut down any further discussion or questions.

I didnt say he still loves her, or wants to rekindle their relationship.

I said he remembers. Which he does.

But you seem to have caused yourself a lot of stress with this situation. Maybe thats why its not a good idea to date your friends exes.

You’re right

Agree 100%. You’re so right how silly could I be engaged to man who loves a woman he last saw at 20 yrs old. I hope they rekindle and he can have step children he’s great around children so he’ll be wonderful.

Why are people getting so angry over someone they do not know. I find some of the responses funny now it’s the internet not a jury I’m not a criminal relax. There’s far worse things people can do.

You are able to completely ignore the post. I’m having fun responding now because some of these are just ridiculous. If you are still obsessing over a man you last saw at 20 yrs old then go get him and rekindle your romance no one’s saying you cannot do that. She can do that if she’d like to I will offer to facilitate it and we can see how that goes ahaha.

I'm surprised you even have friends, tbh.

Vindictive, judgemental, callous, dismissive, sarcastic, bitter, completely lacking in empathy and veering off into utterly ridiculous statements.

Get a fucking grip.

Is your memory genuinely that shit that you wouldn’t remember dating someone for 2 years?! I remember every person I went on more than a few dates with.

Maybe you should both go and see someone.

I think dragging a neurodevelopmental condition into it adds nothing except a bit of ableism

There seems to be the assumption that a 20 year old isn’t a boy he’s not a child but the brain isn’t fully developed.

20 year olds are still adolescent research at Cambridge uni even shows that your brain isn’t developed so yes he is essentially a boy at 20. At that age your brain is still in the developmental phase. I am not just saying that for the sake it neuroscientists have said that your brain at 20 is still actively changing and developing constantly.

He did not murder anyone he simply decided he didn’t want to be in a relationship that is not a crime. I also think it’s okay to give grace to 20 year olds for their decisions in this case he hasn’t done anything wrong it’s a bit dramatic.

But I am not a neuroscientist I can only go by the research and evidence. I also have first hand experience being in my mid 30s and having a half brother who is 20 years old.

I think you have got a bit wound up about all of this. A 20 year old may still be doing stupid stuff and still being maturing but they are definitely a young man not a boy.

I expect your friend is feeling gutted because the friendship group won't feel the same anymore as you and her clearly aren't going to want to stay in touch after this, and probably she will be the one left out. It's also completely irrelevant to your friend's feelings that you were happy for a friend to marry your ex, she isn't you and it is bothering her.

You're not going to drop the relationship though, so the only question is how do you handle it from now on.

Sorry for my grammar I am dyslexic

You are right but also I think the timing isn’t great. I don’t demand anything but I do think that someone I consider a friend should be able to speak to me if something bothers them. I don’t think telling me that you miss a man who don’t know anymore once we are engaged is rational. Especially when you’ve been married and have children.

Bloody hell all this post need to be complete is an autism diagnosis.

so true @Delphiniumandlupins the op keeps saying she hoped the relationship would fail but that’s absolutely not the same as thinking it wouldn’t last when they first got together. My guess is the OP is deliberately exaggerating everything the friend has said - she’s certainly very quiet on details despite many many posts.

Rightly so because this is a jury and I’m required to post every detail verbatim. It is my post not forcing people to interact last time I checked.
