AIBU to think my friend should just accept I am marrying her ex?

I’m 35 and have been with my partner for 4 years. We actually met again completely by chance after many years of not seeing each other, hit it off, were messaging for a week or so and decided to go on a date and he asked to meet up for a coffee and a walk. Before we had even been on our first date, I told my friend that we had hit it off messaging and we’re going for coffee because I wanted to be upfront with her.

He had been her boyfriend at university when they were around 18–20. They were together for about 2 years. They broke up nearly 20 years ago and obviously people change enormously between 18 and 36.

When I told her, after a couple time of meeting him that we are officially seeing each other I specifically asked if she had a problem with it. She said no, so I took that at face value. I wasn’t sneaking around or getting into a relationship with her ex behind her back. I actually even told her before we’d been on the first date.

We’ve now been together for 4 years. We moved in together & he proposed earlier this year and I said yes. We’re very happy, are buying a house together and would like to have children. We have a wedding date set for next June, invitations have gone out and our university friends have been absolutely lovely about it , RSVPs, messages, people booking hotels etc. They’re genuinely excited for us.

When I told this particular friend about the engagement, she said, “Oh, are you going to marry my ex?” I reminded her that we’d been together for 4 years and that I had told her about us from the very beginning. She then said that she’d only said she had no problem with it because she didn’t think we would last.
That has really thrown me.

I completely understand that she might have complicated feelings about it. I’m not trying to tell her how she should feel. But at some point, surely you have to accept that this was a relationship from university when you were 18 years old?

It’s not as though they were together for 15 years, were engaged, had children or had some huge life together. They were university sweethearts for a couple of years, nearly 20 years ago. She has since married, had children and divorced. He and I have now built an actual adult life together over the last four years.

And honestly, I find it particularly difficult because I had exactly the reverse situation myself. One of my friends married someone I had dated at university. I was 18. They got together years later and eventually married and have children. I genuinely didn't have an issue with it. I thought, “We were teenagers at university, life moved on,” and I was happy for them.

So I’m struggling with why I’m apparently supposed to feel guilty now.

I also wonder whether this friendship may simply be worth losing if this is something she can’t move past. Obviously I’d rather not lose a friend, but I don’t think I can spend the rest of my life feeling that I’ve done something wrong by marrying my partner.

All our other university friends seem completely happy for us and are looking forward to the wedding. Nobody else seems to see this as some enormous betrayal.

AIBU to think she needs to let this go? I can understand her feeling upset, but I don’t think she gets a veto over a relationship that started nearly 20 years after theirs ended.

Or am I being completely insensitive about the fact that, regardless of how long ago it was, he will always be “her ex” to her?

Yes you got it lots and lots of desperation.

I’d rather marry someone I love I’ve been proposed and was engaged to someone else but I decided he wasn’t the one I wanted to marry if I was so desperate I think I’d have married him but who knows eh.

Children aren’t something I’m hoping for if it happen it happens we’d like them but also our lives won’t end if we don’t have children.
I’m 36 now by the time I’m ready for children I’ll be 40 we’ll have to see

Perhaps you weren’t desperate then. Does it matter?

All I’m saying is that you really need to let this anger go. You’ve made your choice, be at peace with it.

Cruel would be a good middle name, I agree.

My biological parents were quite creative

In your shoes I’d accept that she wasn’t happy and there was nothing I could do about it.

I may be wrong but I sense desperation in your OP - never married, window closing on having your own children, etc. perhaps that’s what’s behind your apparent anger with the responses on this thread, maybe why you posted it in the first place.

Just let it go. The anger will taint your relationship if you don’t.

Everyone’s acting like I’m this horrible villain or a criminal. Nothing I have done is a crime.

I am entitled to marry whoever the fuck I want I’m also entitled to be in a loving relationship what’s so bad about that. It’s not as though they were married or that he cheated on her and left her with his children. He ended the relationship at 20 years old not a crime. We started seeing each other at 31/32 years old I told her and was honest about my intention in getting to know him and seeing if there’s anything there enough time has passed. I’m now almost 36 just let it go now. Focus on your children and maybe go out and meet other men, she can go find my exes from university I wouldn’t care I would be happy for her.

I think you’re a bit of a wind up merchant OP! You’re loving this thread.

I am because some of the assumptions on me are ridiculous I’d rather go along with it. I’ve explained I’m the one getting bombarded with messages on WhatsApp. It’s crazy but I’m the insane one. I have only responded to one of those messages because it’s just funny at this point and kind of scary she needs to get a grip it was a man she knew for two years at the age of 18 to 20 not a man she was married to for 20 years. What am I supposed to respond to when someone says they’re sad I’m getting married… what the hell why would you be sad someone else is getting married I wasn’t sad when my friends got married I was happy for them.

He’s the one that got away. I was with my ex bf from uni until age 30. Devastated when we split. I’ve been happily married for 30 years but if a friend got together with my ex I would find it really hard (while knowing I was BU)

BuildbyNumbere · 16/08/2026 14:39

Maybe she’s jealous as shes now divorced … she can feel however she wants, not much you can do but concentrate on your relationship.

Then I suggest you miss out on having kids because it won’t end well when two people both want to do a hobby that sucks up so much time and money and one ends up holding the baby. But I don’t believe you cycle either as you sound unhinged. I’m leaving this thread. You are very cruel and distasteful.

Fair enough well I’m 35 the window for biological children has pretty much closed plus like you’ve rightly pointed out I am so cruel it would be a disservice to have children

True let’s hope I don’t become a cyclist widow considering I cycle too. It’s a competition between us to see who becomes the widow. I’ll need all the luck I can get when I’m a widow at least he’ll die doing something he loves and something Ive constantly supported him through. Funny thing is I got him into cycling.

No not at all. I think I’ve even said this within the post but I think after almost 20 years she doesn’t really have a right to veto his relationships. She has not seen him since university, she’s been married, had children, it was a relationship when they were in their late teens at university.

She can't veto his relationship though - she's not got the power to do that. She can dislike it all you like but unless you hand her control there's nothing she can hold over you.

Your friends can likely see there’s drama and immaturity on both sides.

That’s right they’re entitled to their opinions on it too. Drama is actually my first name I like to think I live up to the name

Oh dear. A cyclist. I did wonder why you have spent most of your Sunday ranting and saying awful things. Hope you don’t become a classic cyclist widow. It’s worse than golf. Especially once babies come along. The ex dodged a bullet. You sound very mean and cruel towards your friend. If you were secure in yourself as a person you could see her hurt, understand it without ranting and raving, and give her more time to process her complicated feelings. Good luck with the marriage.

The invite is there if she’d like to come to the wedding. All our friends are so she can choose to or not they all find this drama childish we are adults I haven’t taken him from her.

OP, you seem to have a very poor insight into human relationships and behaviour. When posters try to explain you simply deny and denigrate them along with your friend.

If anyone on the thread comes across as “insane” and “immature” it’s you.

I’d wager the reason for your friend’s multiple WhatsApp paragraphs is the same for the length of this thread: you simply refuse to see life from anyone’s perspective but your own. She may have repeatedly tried to explain it to you as have posters here - and similarly failed.

I have a lot of middle names and they include insane and immature. I’ve already admitted that it’s no secret those are the names my parents gave me. I didn’t choose my name.

Your friend is probably over him, she has moved on with her life. It might be awkward for her to see him for the first time after being dumped.
