No, it's still perfectly legal to have a BBQ, and a responsibly sited, attended garden BBQ is perfectly safe. Disposable BBQs have been banned as they are a far higher fire risk.

A bonfire in the garden is also not safe and rather foolish.

That will be because it's still perfectly legal to use BBQs. It's only disposable BBQs (which have a much higjer risk profile) that have been banned from sale.

My neighbour also had a fire in their garden this evening.. Unbelievable. I saw the smoke and looked over the fence. Male neighbour was there, so I said I was worried when I saw the smoke what with all the wildfires. He looked embarrassed. idiot.

One of my brothers mates who grew up in the valleys, set the hillside on fire when he was about 11. Things escalated and it burnt out the electricity substation for his entire village, sensing that he was really in the shit, he paniked and ran away, hiding overnight. So what started as 'just' a wildfire turned into a simulatanous wildfire, large scale power outage and missing child alert!!

In their defence they probably couldn't read the alert like 90% of the the population when it was first sent out!!

In UK law, "extreme negligence" that causes a fire is not treated as simple carelessness; it is prosecuted as arson (if reckless) under the criminal damage Act 1971 or as gross negligence manslaughter if the fire results in a fatality.

Under UK criminal law, arson does not require a deliberate intent to burn down a property; recklessness is sufficient to satisfy the legal threshold.

So already a thing in UK law, and after that alert nobody can claim they didn't think it was a risk. It will be interesting to see what charges they go for as they start to make arrests.

I saw it discussed with regards to the Rhinogs fire, since the person who caused it called it in themselves, whether they could/ should still be arrested.

Come to Wales, neighbours are still out burning rubbish and teenagers out setting fireworks off. They just look at you like you're talking a foreign language when asked why they're doing it. Fires have died down today, but the idiot count is no different to yesterday, still high!!
