Government alert?!?!

Not the first time we've had them in our area, also had them for the floods. I remember turning the alert off on my old phone as youngest was a baby at the time and my Autistic child wouldn't have coped with the noise but heard them as DP and oldest DD had theirs switched on.

Forgot to switch it off on my new phone but luckily we were in the garden this time and it didn't seem as loud/startling. We are surrounded by 2 mountains on fire and had to close our windows last night as smoke so bad. Wind is blowing the opposite direction today so not as bad but the fires are awful here in south Wales. It didn't help as other people have said that it came up in Welsh first and second time and it's not really a Welsh speaking area and there was at least 5 minutes until they sent the alert in English on the 3rd alert.

I thought it was very poorly done in Wales, the alert went out in Welsh first with a long wait before the English language version arrived.

I wholly believe in encouraging the Welsh language to grow, however emergency alerts is not the moment to die on that hill when the overwhelming majority of the Welsh population (currently) cannot read Welsh well enough to understand what is being said.

It should have been bilingual in the first place.

We were recently in Canada and received an emergency alert saying a child had been kidnapped from a nearby town and giving a description of the perpetrator. So would never turn them off because that’s the kind of thing I do want to be alerted to immediately.

It’s more about being put into fight or flight mode unnecessarily. Though if this is the best way to get the message across not to cause fires, I support it.

Half the people whining say they switched off the alerts years ago. 🤣. Clearly desperate to know what it said so they decided to read this thread.

We're in a pub somewhere with a very poor phone signal. 2 alarms went off and everyone was asking what it said - it's quite unsettling to hear the alarm but not know what it's for. I needed to know if I should hide under my table or not 😂

Alarms are still going off intermittently here as they pick up signal.

It's trying to prevent further danger, houses have been destroyed, people, including a child are in hospital. It could happen anywhere if people aren't careful and so is warning proactively against danger. The gov will know some of the causes of these fires and so it makes sense to warn people to prevent further fires.
I'd much rather have a warning text than watch more houses burn. Look at fires abroad, it could get much worse given the ground is tinder at the moment.

Then read it and was glad everyone has been told to back off the BBQ's because the fire service are run ragged - they're not free to come running right now if you accidentally set fire to your fence whilst cremating a sausage!

We live in Wales and don’t speak Welsh. It took at least another 5-8 mins for the English version to arrive. Unless the Welsh government is running a covert op to eliminate English speakers in a genuine emergency it would be sensible to put out the English one first. We couldn’t even copy the text from the notification for google translate.

I don’t think people should disable emergency alarms, but I am very sensitive to hearing them. The moment I hear one, my brain tells me nuclear armageddon before anything else. Doesn’t help that there is a lot of tension worldwide.

The embarrassing posts are from those trying to be so cool they've turned theirs off. I'm not scared or shaking, I wasn't planning to have a barbecue in a field snyway but its not just about me.

I thought it was the woods up in flames or my house alarm battery on the blink.
