Government alert?!?!

Been loads round our way recently, notably at 2am this week.

Poor dog nearly had heart failure!

I was terrified! I do think the emergency alerts have been used before though. I think they were used back when we had a load of floods in 2023.

You don't have much contact with the general public do you. Yes, there are some absolute stupid idiots who walk amongst us. I have just had to get my washing in because there is a strong smell of bonfire, FGS.

Yes, the majority of normal people understand the risk but I think it is a good use of the system because it will reach people, especially youngsters, who don't watch the news or read newspapers.

There is one theory that the fire in Stourbridge may have been started by those celebrating A Level results with BBQs.

The world is full of fuckwits, its full of thoughtless, stupid, selfish tossers who DO need reminding. So a mild jump at a noise on your phone that might stop such tossers causing loss of life and/or property is worth it. If you can't see that then you are on the same intellectual level as the morons who need reminding.

It should be for “immediate risk to life” situations only. Using it for things like “don’t start a fire” just makes people mutter “FFS”, potentially disable the alerts and then possibly miss something really important.

Stupid time for it to go off and why did I get it three times on my phone. Alerts now switched off

Why so scared…!? Where I live we get these a couple pf times a month, nearby car accidents, fires etc. We’ve had the app for years, it’s excellent.

Earlier this afternoon DHs phone wouldn't connect to the internet. Were v rural and need to use it for calls etc. So muggins is sitting there transferring his stuff to the spare phone cos he has v important cricket stuff this weekend and can't possibly be without his WhatsApp group!! The govt thingy went off only on the phone that supposedly couldn't connect to he internet. Mine and his new one got nowt. Oh and he came running cos he thought it was a cricket msg. 😅

The siren needs to go. I was at a live recording of an event with an audience and the majority of the audience had their phones on silent, but it still went off. No option on iPhone to get the alert but no siren, so I’ve turned it off completely, which pretty much defeats the point, no?

Yeah, was driving and listening to a podcast and the abrupt change in subject and time was a bit startling. Does she have to sound quite so horror movie-ish? I think if I'd been driving in silence or maybe even just listening to music it might have startled / distracted me to the extent of it increasing the chance of an accident... As it was I spent a moment thinking it was a poorly-edited segue into an ad and then caught on...

They didn't just beep here. They virtually roared.

We too are farmers plus we generate electricity from methane gas and there’s some campers in the opposite field just feet away in a woodland with an open fire. 🤷‍♀️😳😬 we re scared senseless, phoned the fire brigade to be told nothing they can do. Not interested

There never really used to be alarms like this pre Covid, unless it was for a nuclear weapon. Most of us haven’t heard this alert since the test. I think you can understand from this why people are startled.

I don't understand why they have sent this precisely when the heatwave is ending. If it was worth sending the alert, they should have sent it a few days ago. Temperatures are going back to normal in the next few days. Tomorrow's forecast is much lower (London at least)
