Aibu to think 6 years sentence is far too lenient for killing your baby.

Am I the only person who thinks sentencing Courtney Gartshaw to just 6 years for killing her 3 month old baby with hairdryer (burned her to death) is a travesty of justice. She will likely be out in 3! She took the baby on a drink and drug fuelled bender, returning home at 3am, before turning the hairdryer on her tiny baby . Her body was so badly damaged the paramedics thought the baby was decomposed. Gartshaw was allowed bail and her lawyers pleaded for her not to be incarcerated because of her mental health. WTF has happened to our justice system.

Completely disagree with everyone floating dystopian ideas like sterilisation and microchips.

It would be more humane to lengthen her sentence until she hits menopause. I am so tired of criminals getting do-overs at the expense of innocents.

Jdot · 15/08/2026 16:01

If she does the full sentence (very rare thing) she will be 34/35. What are the chances she will find someone and get pregnant once she’s released?

Sterilise her or increase her sentence

Unfortunately, she will be allowed to procreate on her relesse, such is the law in this country unfortunately 😞.

If she were to become pregnant she would be monitored during the pregnancy and the baby would almost certainly be removed at birth for adoption or care within her extended family.

Honestly I would be surprised if she makes it that far though, surely she's extremely high risk of suicide. I know prisons have steps in place to try and prevent that but they're not failsafe. She had a history of attempts on her life prior to being a mum, let alone with this.

I've though about this! I think when babies are born, they should be fitted with a contraceptive microchip. When they get to a suitable age and have taken intensive parenting classes and are able to demonstrate that they can care appropriately for another human, the chips removed.
Think it will work?

This sounds like the plot of a dystopian sci fi novel

Minasama · 15/08/2026 15:09

It’s a shame people who treat children like this - for whatever reason and with whatever context - are not required to be sterilised. At the end of the day they are not safe to be around children and the reasons for that don’t matter. The main thing is to prevent them having or coming into contact with any more children.

How would you go about policing who was allowed to get pregnant? And how would you stop pregnancy?

As horrible as it is, if the situation was as the previous poster mentioned and she put the hair dryer on and passed out drunk, the charge and sentence makes more sense. Similar to drunk parents who have killed their child by co sleeping when drunk, or leaving them too close to a radiator. Its such a shame no one who saw her out and drunk that night intervened, it seems so easily avoidable in that regard.

She was out partying with her friends and neighbours, with the baby!!! All these people were there and did fuck all to protect this wee baby who's 'mother" was steaming drunk and trying to score drugs.
I hope they all feel some guilt, forever!!

It still blows my mind that pretty much anyone can have a child, yet to adopt, you have to go through a lengthy process to prove you're capable of providing a safe and suitable home.

You can even face more checks before being allowed to adopt a cat or dog than you do before becoming a parent.

And we continue to see children dying at the hands of the very people who are supposed to love and protect them. It's absolutely horrifying.

How would you go about policing who was allowed to get pregnant? And how would you stop pregnancy?

HangingOver · 15/08/2026 13:04

I'm afraid I've got little sympathy for drug users and think they should be allowed to take as many drugs as they want and with a bit of luck, overdose and die

And how are they paying for all those drugs. Fewer addicts makes society better for everyone, not just the users.

BreatheAndFocus · 15/08/2026 13:03

From the judgement (my bold):

^”The Crown’s expert’s position was that the likely cause of Dahlia Rose’s death was hyperthermia and heatstroke rather than burns.
The defence expert’s position was that Dahlia Rose was likely already dead from another sudden and unexplained cause, before she was subjected to heat from the hairdryer.
The jury clearly and emphatically rejected the defence position. They had no reasonable doubt that it was the heat from the hairdryer which caused Dahlia Rose’s death”^

Terrribletwos · 15/08/2026 13:02

Runningswanker · 15/08/2026 12:47

Sadly the judgment says the baby likely died of hyperthermia, ie from heat, not hypo, from cold. Hyperthermia and heatstroke. So she died from being heated by the hairdryer, but not from the visible injuries, ie the burns.
Absolutely horrible. I feel very sorry for the jury and legal staff who had to sit through this case, and of course Dahlia-Rose.

Yes, sorry, I re read and the report does say hyperthermia. I got confused as earlier reporting had mentioned people commenting that the child "looked freezing"
I am not sure why she wasn't reported being out and about, obviously intoxicated, with a baby? Or maybe she was?

You think healthy and mentally stable people a re e killing their babies?

No one who murdered someone is healthy and mentally stable. Doesn’t mean they don’t go to jail for a long time as a punishment.

Venusunbroken · 15/08/2026 12:48

I also thought this op, I cannot for the life of me understand such a short sentance, and the judge seemed to try to justify it by saying she’d have to live with it the rest of her life. She killed her baby in an utterly brutal and painful manner, wtf is wrong with the judge,

this sentance needs to be looked at again and increased.

Runningswanker · 15/08/2026 12:47

Terrribletwos · 15/08/2026 12:41

The report says that the baby was probably hypothermic before she did this. Either way it's awful.

20 years in prison for the undertaker who didn't bury dead customers. 7 for this freak.go figure.

The sentence should be a full life sentence. She killed tiny baby in the most hideous, hurtful way.
In addition to that, the mental health crisis is completely out of control at the moment after so much underinvestment in public services and we do need to realise that healthy, happy, secure people don’t kill babies and we should want a society where mental health problems are very unusual rather than a regular occurrence. Of course she was unstable to do that. Who would do it otherwise.
She is a monster, and a product of our negligent society.

She wasn't suffering a mental illness. She was extremely drunk.
Not that that makes it any better, but just because someone does something horrific doesn't mean they're mentally ill.

Terrribletwos · 15/08/2026 12:41

Velumental · 14/08/2026 16:39

I'm sure I read that someone had said she was out with baby earlier that day and someone commented on the baby being freezing. I wonder if the baby was hypothermic and in her drug addled state she thought she was warming them up. Horrible case, poor baby.

The report says that the baby was probably hypothermic before she did this. Either way it's awful.

BIossomtoes · 15/08/2026 12:13

There’s a high possibility she was already dead.

I don’t think there’s a high possibility? As Gartshaw hasn’t said what actually happened, it does imply she might know she did something culpable. If people had seen her out with the baby and told her the baby looked very cold, they’d surely have noticed if the baby was already dead?

I think Gartshaw got in, accepted (and saw) that the baby was very cold and, instead of actively warming her up by holding her or getting her medical attention, she put a hairdryer on and pointed it at her - then went to sleep because she was pissed and out of it. The burns on the tiny baby were horrific. She must have screamed in agony, but Gartshaw either didn’t wake or half woke and just went back to sleep.

That’s just my opinion - but I think it’s a higher possibility than the baby already being dead when Gartshaw pointed the hairdryer at her.

There really needs to be a licensing system for people to have children. It's unbelievable that we let just anyone do it, no matter how incapable they are.
