To ask if you think the prime minister has a democratic duty to house asylum seekers in middle class areas

By which I mean, would most voters support this as opposed to a change in policy to refuse in greater numbers? I honestly can't tell what "the majority" actually wants. I would prefer fewer having seen how things went in Germany thanks to the Merkel wave but I am willing to believe I'm a backwards old boomer and a majority would be more welcoming.

They (UK governments) tend to say they have no choice due to the echr but this isn't true. There are a lot of operational choices they could make (eg sometimes when people are denied entry at the border they are actually allowed into the country for a few days and instructed to report back to the airport when it's time for the removal flight).

How can Labour claim to be fiscally prudent and say we massively need to increase taxes etc and cut spending in certain areas, yet at the same time massively increase costs to the taxpayer by housing asylum seekers in expensive areas for no clear reason and certainly no remit from the people they are meant to represent. It's strange that they always manage to find billions of pounds when it suits their agenda.

And? It’s not like we are running out of space - we generally have a very low birth rate. But the point is - we actually have low numbers comparably.

What planet are you on? We are an island. There’s a massive housing shortage, and the government’s answer is to ride roughshod over local communities, dismiss genuine concerns as "nimbyism", and let developers pave over whatever green space takes their fancy.

We need land to grow food. Farmers have already taken a battering, and without them, where is our food supposed to come from? Are we just going to import everything?
What is your actual upper limit for net migration, by the way?

There is only so much space, taxpayer funding, and housing to go around. With AI advancing, there will be even fewer jobs in the future. You only have to look on here to see how many parents are stressing about their kids struggling to find work after university.

I heard someone liken it to a pool table recently: you can only keep adding balls for so long before there’s no green felt left.

Strange men from cultures which are misogynist, homophobic, anti democratic and antisemitic.

There has been 4 gay men attacked in Ireland, 3 died, one Alex coughlan two Arab teenagers set up a fake dating account m, meet up kicked him to death on a Sunday afternoon on the roadside.

The other 3, also tricked by a meet up app, 2 were beheaded and the 3rd managed to fight back, he was scarred, when the Middle Eastern man was arrested on social welfare, housing benefits, Yousef Palani, had 375,000.00 euro in his home. He attacked the men over a few days.

Strange isn’t it.

Awful. Also those 8 Afghan refugees (their legal status) charged with rape and trafficking. One of those men was resident in Ireland, too.

Just 0.2% of land in England is recorded as vacant. The 91% recorded as 'undeveloped' is forest, farmland, water etc. So yes unless you want to start clearing trees, jeopardise our water supply or reduce our food self sufficient further we are running out of space. There is no record of developed space that is not currently in use.

You do realise that the British Isles is not just some faceless economic zone that just popped into existence when Tony Blair was elected and is an actual place with an indigenous people who have existed for thousands of years, with a long history and rich culture and that massively increasing the population also means destroying a lot of nature in order to build new homes and infrastructure whilst each extra person massively increases the carbon footprint once they start living a western lifestyle, which seems to completely contradict the claims of the Net-zero crowd that supposedly want to stop climate change. Individuals are not just interchangeable units of GDP birthed to feed the capitalist machine.

They're not idle. It's deliberate. With all that money stashed away, it's obvious they're being funded from outside. I honestly believe the government are allowing this deliberately, in order to terrorise and subjugate us. What comes next, we can only imagine.

yes the net zero nonsense which only seems to apply when it suits (stick to beat us with and to exhort money out of taxpayers)

in my area there seems to be a correlation with litter and flytipping as well and it has definitely increased of late

People in poorer areas don’t want them either. But their concerns have long been dismissed by those in the middle class on the left.

The wealthy areas who vote Green, Labour and Lib Dem may now realise what they have voted for.

That’s probably where the money is coming from.

The main mosque in Dublin had to close down for 9 months due to in-house fighting. A takeover, it has reopened by the new imam.
Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland (ICCI):

The crisis began in April 2025 when a chaotic altercation and alleged attempts to take control of the premises prompted the Dubai-based Al-Maktoum Foundation—which funds and owns the centre—to shut down the mosque indefinitely. This sparked a bitter internal dispute involving High Court legal battles, the dismissal of the long-standing Imam, and investigations into alleged financial irregularities and ties to ideological groups

It's not as simple as 'middle class areas' though is it? What about London for a start - who would even know who is an immigrant and who isn't?

Also, Clacton has virtually no immigrants - legal or illegal - but they vote for Farage. What's that about then?

It's simply not true that Reform voters are the ones most likely to be affected by illegal immigration. Loads of Reform voters who, in their day to day lives - barely clap eyes on any form of immigrant, let alone an illegal one. They just watch GB News and that's enough for them.

I used to live in London. You can usually tell by accent who is an immigrant. It's strikingly different to the city I live in now where most brown faces seem to be recent arrivals - in London you have people off all ethnicities with London accents, very much British, second/third/fourth generation who have integrated.

I disagree that Reform voters are not the ones affected by immigration. I think there's two types - people who are actually racist (i.e. dislike foreign people on principle), including those living in areas with few migrants. And people who do live in areas affected by high migration who have concerns. The city I live in had a noticeable swing toward Reform in local elections in areas with a lot of migrants.

Is it true that the wonderful former 'Conservative' minister Edwina Currie has suggested what the residents of Piddington need to help these young men is a brothel?

Would any of you lovely young ladies of Mumsnet like a lucrative new employment opportunity in an emerging market with plenty of room for regular custom? Don't all sign up at once!

Well, I suppose Edwina, having plumbed the depths with John Major has perhaps a different view on these things

I’m not sure but I do feel for Piddington. It’s a tiny town.

As much as I am livid at the Middle Class for denigrating the Working Class over issues of migration and cultural erasure, some very innocent people are going to have some very horrible things happen to them as a result of these plans, and the state will want nothing to do with them because of what it does to the narrative. Just like the poor girls of places like Rotherham and Telford.

It's so sad.

LuckyHazelFox · 14/08/2026 13:34

Why employment? Volunteering is much more in the spirit of white middle class British ladies.

Well you may be jesting, but some of the things I've heard about some of the volunteers at organisation like 'Care4Calais', you might not be too far off the mark.

Perhaps Edwina herself would volunteer for the job 🤣
