Surely each establishment makes it's own choice depending on the conditions in the kitchen / dining room. Perhaps may people cancel reservations due to the heat.

It's perfectly reasonable . They are still offering food. I assume the kitchen is small , and it would be very unpleasant and possibly unhealthy to cook in it in this heat.
I doubt they would lose any money because people prefer bold food when it's hot anyway.

My daughter works in a gastro pub and she says the hot evenings recently have brought people near to breaking point. She and other staff were actually close to fainting at times, and it becomes dangerous. Not saying a Library cafe is working at this volume..

I appreciate some outlets will have to continue to provide hot food (like my daughter's) but those which can get away without - I don't blame them.
I think it's amazing that Library has a cafe at all - wow! I'd be pleased with just beverages, sandwiches and cakes in the summer.

Several places round here don’t do hot food when it’s really hot. They find too much goes to waste as nobody really wants hot snacks or meals when it’s too hot so it’s not worth the staff roasting to cook stuff that will end up getting binned at the end of the day.

Some will, some won’t. I’m afraid we can’t tell you whether the ones near you will be open or closed.

ive just served lunch at work, several soups ordered, I will be cooking curry for my tea, I prefer hot food for dinner and both curry and chilli comes from countries far hotter than here.

Yes I find it a bit odd too! I lived in southern Spain for 10 years and we ate lots of hot food.

Exactly, especially as the food is often very basic, toasties, soup etc and libraries with cafes tend to be those in town and city centres so are surrounded by loads of cafes, bars etc that serve much more interesting food.

As for 'who wants hot food anyway' I find the MN aversion to hot food very strange. I've just come back from Spain and the majority of the lunch options were hot and just about all the plates brought out were hot food.

They are offering sandwiches and cold food though.Its baking hot and they dont want their staff collapsing in the heat !Have a sandwich and a cold drink FFS!

It sounds very sensible and I'm all for caring about the well-being of your staff.

I'll be honest I can remember occasions on a cold day where I've been out and about and annoyed that I couldn't buy hot food anywhere but never on a hot day.

They are being sensible and caring for their staff! I know someone who works on a kitchen and last heatwave he said it was over 50 degrees in there!!! No one wants to work in that heat!

They have to put staff safety and the duty of care above money...

Plenty of places near us stop doing any food/hot food during the heatwaves because they are unable to keep the kitchen space cool for staff.

Our local National Trust will only be offering cakes today; and they won't be restocking at lunchtime as they won't be using the ovens after 7am. They're also not opening the house.

Several cafés will only offer sandwiches and others are closing entirely.

Well maybe the health of their staff is more important than cooking at a hot oven/hob/fryer.

We don't have the "heatwave " here but I saw some places are going to be 35 degrees. I am sure people can cope with a cold sandwich for a while.

So why are you so offended if it doesn’t impact you?

I would imagine that a cafe inside a public library doesn’t have a high tech infrastructure to deal with all kinds of weather. They could be concerned about their staff having to cook in that level of heat, or food storage. They are not being unreasonable for making operational decisions based on their circumstances. You are, for rage baiting on MN.

Perfectly reasonable. There are safe working conditions and unsafe working conditions. Extreme heat is an unsafe condition.

I work in a kitchen. Being in a kitchen with ovens, deep fat fryers, sterilisers, hot plates, dishwashers, in a heatwave, is utter misery. If it's 35 degrees outside it's much, much hotter in the kitchen.

I think it’s sensible. I’m sure they are worried about losing money, but they are putting their employee’s welfare over profits in this instance. Do you think that’s a bad thing?
