If you had to be dropped into any country with no money, which country and what would you do to get by?

Ireland.
I had a friend from Donegal who decided to become a vagabond and travel around for the summer as a social experiment for his thesis. This was in the 1980s.
In every village he walked or hitched through he first went to the priest’s house and got a meal or some money from the poor box.
Then he’d go to the pub, strike up a conversation and often get invited back for a night on the sofa, a shower and breakfast the next day.
It was warm enough to sleep rough and he arrived in Dublin exhausted and emaciated 3 months later without spending a penny of his own money.

I’m sure it helped that he was well spoken and respectful but it says a lot about the tolerance and generosity of people in Ireland at the time.
Probably still possible today.

It would probably be either France, Italy or Greece, as I know those countries and speak fluent Italian and some French.

Best thing to do would be to find an intentional community looking for volunteers, so you're effectively swapping work for board. Or WWOOFing.

Matala, in Crete. They don't let people live in the caves any more, but you might be able to pick up some orange picking work in Dec/Jan. Which is exactly what I did ooh....35 years ago. (I didn't stay in Matala though).

In that case France isn’t bad. Good state safety net if you already have residency teach English as a foreign language, be a fruit picker learn a language, You could go to most places in the world as an au pair. Sweden or Denmark or Norway as its not so flipping hot,

Greek island. Never been there but Joni Mitchell wrote some great songs living in a cave on the beach.

Saint Marie from Death in Paradise. I’d get a job in the bar or on the boats, swim in the beautiful sea, and make niknaks to sell to tourists.

Actually no. George Mahood wrote a book on his experience of starting at lands end with just a pare of shorts...him and his mate...the goodwill of the British people got him to John o groats. So the UK is an option

Me the us, they love the Brits, especially if you can do various accents around the country. When I was 20 (not legally meant to drink but never had an issue) I got chatting to two rich Americans and their wives, the bought all my drinks and my food in an expensive restaurant and loved it that I had an accent they didn't know.. West Country...but could do Scouse, Scottish, cockney, Welsh and generic northern.

What I would do is be like Jack reacher and explore the towns off the beaten track.

Austria because it’s beautiful and I speak the language, not sure what I would do!!!

Greece... more specifically: Crete, initially rely on their incredible hospitality to get on my feet, then find work in a hotel for the summer and learn olive tree farming out of tourist season, and yes- I would learn the language (already learning)

Otherwise, it'll be Germany or Switzerland as my German and French is passable.

I did it. Tourist resort. Sleep where you can ( good climate helps this) and walk around asking for waitressing/ bar / chambermaid work.
I didn't have no money at all though, but very little, and not enough for hotels or to get home again.
Found live-in work on the 2nd day.
Oh the confidence of youth!!!

I have done it. Came just with a plane ticket my aupair family bought me, moved from aupair to aupair, met a man and moved in with him. It has been 20 years now

Or go to England and force mince ,tatties ,mealy pudding on folk.

Poland.. i could live with family and happily eat fruit from the orchard they have. (Born and bred scottish with polish, German, Irish family. Spent my childhood summers in Poland and absolutely loved it there, sadly the last trip i had there at 20 I was very ill, rushed to hospital 2 days after i arrived home with a pulmonary embolism and told i couldn't fly again unless I took blood thinking injections 6 months before and 6 months after 🥹. They are bloody horrible so I haven't been back since 💔.

Erm, probably rural New Zealand, because I can milk cows and would earn money that way!

I'd prefer France, though. I've always wanted to learn fluent French. The only issue is that I'm intolerant to cheese, and I don't like wine... and if learning Welsh is anything to go by, I might not be good at picking up French, either!

This happened to my cat. Well, metaphorically.
He escaped his carrier in a place that wasn't his home.
He survived by becoming street and picking up a different caccent for a few weeks. He stole food and slept a lot. It changed him.

I thought the Franglais would tip you off about my not being serious.

Across the border in Donegal, walk to the nearest road, get the thumb out and go home.
