To think pensions need huge reform?

With all of the recent chat over changing politicians and big ideas that don’t go anywhere, I can’t be the only one who thinks that someone needs to bite the bullet with pensions?

It’s something ridiculous like 50% of the welfare budget annually, and this is never going to go away.

IMO the government need to hike up retirement age and scrap the triple lock. There can be provisions made to go along with this to phase this in for those in genuine need (e.g. for the next 10 years those with no private pensions can get a top up to cover the transition period).

I’d rather know “look you can’t retire until 75” now than this constant “it’s 67…. now wait it’s 68…..” that never ends.

It seems that all governments are scared to do such a big change as it will piss off older people (who are the primary voting demographic) but something needs to change as this is just completely unsustainable long term.

We’re better off making these changes to ensure the state pension can continue sustainably in the long term future rather than having this attitude of “as long as I’m alright I don’t care”

We need a gov with long term planning goals and not just short term firefighting. AIBU?

Newsflash: we have an aging population, stagnant wages and a very high inflation rate.

The first point is difficult to fix, but point 2 and 3 can be helped with some major political decisions...

We've been told for 25 years that immigrants were going to pay pensions.

More over 70s are paying tax than under 30s. Pensioners are paying for immigrants. My advice is to emigrate.

Well we did rather kick a lot of immigrants out.

As an aside, I think Starmer and Reeves blew the removal of the winter fuel allowance. First by not planning it properly and second by backing off, just as the storm about it was dying down.

Here we go again - 'all boomers are rich, they live in huge houses, they are selfish etc'.
News for you - a lot of us aren't rich, live in small houses bought with hard earned money and help our children as much as we can.
I am so tired of all this ageist rubbish.

And I'm so tired of hearing boomers bitchin' and whining about how hard done by they are. Yet here we are.

ownedbymydogs · 12/08/2026 17:56

I agree! And why bother with pensions at all? Let’s just bring in that assisted dying law!

That’d teach those fucking pensioners who bought their house in ‘73 for half a shilling!

I wonder if you could monetise assisted dying ? Charge more for a speedier despatch ? Brings a whole new meaning to "Gone in 60 seconds"

Minasama · 12/08/2026 17:59

The reform that needs to be made is a mandatory 10 percent or more (whatever the cost would be) of wages to be deducted as pension insurance and paid into a state pension fund which is then invested on al our behalf - as happens in Germany and I believe some Scandi countries. Then you get out an amount commensurate with what you put in…

YABU to obsess over reducing public spending. The UK already spends a lot less per GDP on this than most other European countries. This race to the bottom in the U.K. is incredibly grim. Allow older people to retire and live in peace. Consider that billionaires wealth is spiralling and they’re paying zero tax. The rich are getting astronomically richer at our expense, quite literally.

Yet in China, a country with a much lower per capita income, most women retire at 55! Only managers retire at 60. So it's a question of political will. If you think people who have worked in exhausting manual jobs deserve to retire at 55 you'll plan for it. If you care less, you'll keep raising the retirement age until they have pretty well no retirement at all.

Who said anything about the NHS ? That's another benefit we can easily dump.

I mean all it's doing is keeping old people alive.

Barely.

@Vinvertebratedoctors younger than your DH won’t get that sort of pension though because the schemes are less generous.

He has a small number of low paid years in the “old” scheme, but the vast majority in the new one that is supposedly crap, but still a fucktonne better than any other scheme of offer. Nothing screams “cry me a river” like NHS staff moaning about their pensions.

He’s also got retirement money stashed in his service company for private work, that we don’t currently access in order to avoid paying higher rate tax. We plan to spiff that on luxury holidays during retirement, but yeah apart from all doctors are dead underpaid. 🙄

What does taxing wealth mean?

The mobile global 1%? not going to happen without international initiative.

The wealthy can fuck wherever they like.

They can't take their land with them

Naunet · 12/08/2026 17:45

milkhater · 12/08/2026 17:31

And again, if the government stopped wasting BILLIONS of tax payers money, this wouldn't be an issue.

@Naunet
so how much waste is acceptable & what would you stop wasting money on?

I've already given examples in a previous post, so maybe you can explain why its ok for the government to waste billions on HS2?

loveawineloveacrisp · 12/08/2026 17:42

milkhater · 12/08/2026 17:34

@Backwardsbinn where did I say otherwise? But the fact remains that public sector pensions are not as generous to younger entrants.

There were far more DB schemes in the private sector too.

I've just started consolidating my pensions and when I looked into one of my small DB ones I was confused about how many years contributions I had as I knew I'd been there longer. Turned out you had to work there for 5 years before you qualified to join the pension scheme! So that's 5 years in my 20s when I couldn't pay in. 20s me wouldn't have cared, but 50s me does!

Another major issue is the lack of economic growth

Edited

But UK grd has grown by an average of 1.3% over the last 10 years compared to Germany 0.97

LauraNorda · 12/08/2026 17:41

NullaEffugium · 12/08/2026 16:31

The major flaw is this is a lunatic amount of money to come up with.

Based on 600,000 births per year, that would be £7.5 billion a year.

For reference, the foreign aid budget is around £13 billion.

In government terms, £7.5 billion is small change.

The current spend for pensions is £146 billion. My plan is very long term but in 70 or 80 years, the state pension cost would be zero and would be forevermore.

milkhater · 12/08/2026 17:37

More over 70s are paying tax than under 30s

The difference is largely due to frozen tax bands & the triple lock which is pulling more pensioners into paying tax.

Awkwardisfunny · 12/08/2026 17:27

Omg. No. No. No. The big change needed is taxing wealth. Sick of hearing that those of us on the ground floor need to tighten our bootstraps and work until we drop. It needs to (and can) go in the other direction. But that needs a fairer spread of resources.

We also need to bring in euthanasia for people who want it. That will ease the pressure on resources too.

Im sick to death of the government throwing tax payers money away. Billions wasted on HS2, millions wasted on the Rowanda plan, millions sent to other countries, (half of which either dont even need it, like China or arent providing the service we're paying for, like France), millions on supporting people who have never paid a penny into the system....Yet when we look to cut back, who do we look to first? Those who HAVE paid into the system all their lives. Its fucked up.

👏👏👏

And once you get too frail, you don’t need £200 a week, as you aren’t able to do anything with it

People to frail to do anything with it will need to pay for help around the house etc. Pay for taxis, that sort of thing.

So they will need it.

£238 State pension.
Will they then not need to pay for- council tax , water rates, gas, electricty, broadband, phone, house ins,
car or transport expenses, household maintenance,
repair & replacement of appliances,
a cleaner or gardener, clothing ect?
Oh and now and again possibly a little food....

Naunet · 12/08/2026 17:14

milkhater · 12/08/2026 17:03

@NaunetYou are confusing two different issues and the point you are making is relevant to millions boomer or not.

It’s the fact the boomers are such a large cohort and the generation above them was smaller so the boomers paid less towards them. You can google it if you still don’t understand…

Oh god, another Boomer obsessed poster.
The point stands, either we only get out what we put in, or we dont, you cant have both ways. Also I'm not sure its even true, maybe when looking at their taxable income, but what about everything else we pay tax on whilst alive and then again when we die, is that factored in?

And again, if the government stopped wasting BILLIONS of tax payers money, this wouldn't be an issue.

They’ll still get a pension that is wildly more generous than thomas can be afforded by those in the private sector - I.e. those that work in companies that fund the public sector.
