Because we colonised huge swathes of the world, destabilised large numbers of countries and plundered their wealth to financially elevate our small island country. Many of those countries indigenous people were decimated not only by violence but by the rampant disease we brought.

We then, in most cases, fucked off out leaving immature leadership and countries unable to effectively lead themselves and prosper.

We have also, in more recent times, used our power to interfere in the governance of other nations, start wars under the guise of humanitarian motives, destabilising entire geographical regions.

We are now reaping what we sowed and to do anything other than be humanitarian and accommodating to migrants would be political suicide on the, already unstable, world stage. And, pretty revolting.

But non- white people don’t like what’s going on with the boats either and they’re quite open about it because they don’t have to worry about being called racist.

It's perhaps time that middle earners got their fair share after years of subsidising everyone else.

I’m not white. Do I get called racist because of this view on asylum seekers? Yes absolutely. It has happened in real life. oh, and I’ve been called a coconut on here. Apparently, if your ancestors came here legitimately at some point, you’re not allowed to complain when men come here without an invitation.

I don’t know what the pro crowd have in common but both pro and anti come from all groups of people.

Word in the circles that are in the know - is that this is not Andy Burnham being “fair”. The govt has run out of hotels/accommodations in the cheaper towns, they are now squeezed and going further out. They will be criticised for spending on expensive hotels, but the media mob won’t go after them as Andy B has already “explained it is all about fairness”.

Are you not concerned about paedophiles? They are released no one is allowed to know where they live, your neighbours could be one for all you know. Most then go onto re offend!

People complain about the cost though! I live in a naice part of the south east. The hotels are in demand with well off business people, tourists etc. The hotels are profitable and have reinvested that in smart facilities. To convince the proprietors to accept immigrants the government would have to pay the going rate & it would be expensive.

By contrast, an old somewhat neglected hotel near a poor northern town is probably a fifth of the cost to the government.

Can you imagine the daily fail headlines? "ASYLUM SEEKERS LAPPING UP LUXURY AT £250 A NIGHT HOTEL"

Divert some of the billions of the Foreign Aid budget that goes to the particular countries that are disgorging their men here. Use it to collaborate with Europol and try and smash the trafficking gangs. Go to the source. I realise that post Brexit Uk is not a formal member of Europol but it still co operates with it.

I dunno. I often wonder where all the billions in Foreign Aid actually goes, when thousands and thousands of the recipient country's male population seem to want to leave en masse anyway. Maybe some of the billions is used to pay backhanders to the traffickers. I wouldn't be surprised. Now that would be an interesting thought.

I fully admit that I don't know much about how Foreign Aid budget is dispersed or accounted for. However I'm sure I will be told soon enough.

Quite where does it go ? Many countries are struggling because those in power are totally corrupt basket cases and many are nuclear powers and run on religous lines

Maybe in the UN they need to start to address the reasons why people are so keen to flee some places and not others ?

It really isn't and you must have a shocking level of geopolitical illiteracy to think that way.

For alot of people the effects of colonialism and our interference of foreign nations is still felt.

I suppose we could always pay repatriations, but I suspect housing every single immigrant in the Savoy with an unlimited room service tab would be cheaper.
