To not stick to the hosepipe ban

Commercial use isn't part of the ban. I'm allowed to fill my hot tub as it's for my business. If I used a watering can it would be the same amount of water in any case.

I’m in the bath listening to the rain pouring outside as it has been all day.

My washing got soaked on the line, I went for a run as it seemed to have stopped then as I’d got 6k away from home it started pissing down again so I got back soaked.

I keep reading about heatwaves on here and checked the weather down south and was so jealous.
We had about 2 weeks of glorious weather mixed in with humid overcast days and now rain.

I’m struggling already with the nights drawing in and it being darker in the mornings, I’d love just a couple more weeks of sunshine before it becomes constant rain every day and my mood plummets.

I bet it’s easy to guess where I lived based on this?!

God the selfishness of some on this thread. “Until everything is utterly perfectly everywhere else I’m not going to change my behaviour one jot.” It’s like people refusing to recycle or attempt to reduce their carbon emissions because “until China does its bit, what’s the point?”. The point is that if everyone had that attitude, we’d never get anywhere.

Have you turned on the news? The world on flipping fire, people. One day your children will ask you what things were like when they were kids, and what part you played in trying to help our planet. You’re not being asked to go to war, you’re being asked not to use a hosepipe. And yes, some businesses will be allowed to keep using theirs, because we don’t want to tank (pardon the pun) various bits of the economy and put people out of work if we possibly can. Do you remember Covid?

Esp if you then let them go cold and use the grey water to water your plants. This is what I have been doing - lugging really heavy buckets but I feel it’s worth it. I also have a bowl in the sink to collect water when I am running the tap to get hot water so that doesn't go to waste either.

Certain businesses are allowed to use water. They’re not the issue, it’s people like you that think they don’t have to follow the rule that are the issue.

Baths use less water than modern power showers

I don’t think it’s ok to water lawns, but watering the rest of your garden with a hose is fair enough.

I understand that businesses are exempt but some are more worthy than others. The local hand car wash needs to exempt to continue to exist. The automatic mechanical car wash attached to BP petrol stations which turn over millions do not.

I can’t see what’s so important about golf courses being green. Surely you can whack a ball with a stick whether the grass is green or yellow?

It doesn’t seem right to me to restrict individuals while allowing rich businesses to do what they want, especially when the water companies themselves prioritise shareholder profits over fixing leaks, so I don’t blame anyone for ignoring the hosepipe ban.

I am continuing to use my hosepipe because I would still be using the same amount of water if I used a watering can. It would just take me 4 times longer, so fuck that LOL. We don't have a hosepipe ban actually, but I would still use it even if we did. How the hell am I meant to water my 200+ flowers?! (Incl 30 sunflowers?)

Like I have not stuck to the rooolz about not feeding the birds via the bird seed feeders. I have 6 of them and multiple dozens of birds come by every day, and I wash the feeders out twice a week so they're generally clean.

And I believe it would be more detrimental to them to NOT feed them. Poor things can't get worms out of the ground, and the boiling hot summer means some of their natural food isn't growing.

So I didn't stop feeding them.

Those places provide jobs for people. You can water your garden with a watering can

Then maybe the car washes and the golf courses can do it as well.

Just ignore it then? Have a shorter shower and ‘spend’ the extra on your garden if you’re being sensible with it and it’s beneficial to your mental health.

Unsure of the saving between a quick hose directly on plants and the permitted filling of endless watering cans or drip irrigation. I think it’s a general idea of be mindful with water, so not filling a paddling pool every day or washing your car or sprinkling a massive lawn non stop. Also some people can use a hose but can’t carry watering cans.

Using a watering can focuses your mind on how best to use the water. It’s more effective than a hose, and less wasteful.

Saw the polo green being watered by a hose yesterday. I’m with you op, I won’t be sticking to the ban until all the things you mentioned are monitored. I’m absolutely sick to death of it all.

You can put out water for the birds and hedgehogs, and you can use a watering can on your most vulnerable plants. Creating some shade for plants also helps. Maybe the time will come when business relying on water have to close, but hopefully not yet.

Golf courses are really bad for wildlife and pollinators.

Ordinary suburban gardens are no ch better for supporting diversity.

And jobs there are safe because members there can always play some bridge.

And your flowers are essential to human life?

Which region are you in to have been told not to water plants? Hosepipe bans are usually literally just that - a ban on using hosepipes but using a watering can is fine.

It feels a bit like the Eat out to Help out times when we were not allowed to have a few friends over but were encouraged to mix in restaurants.
