Flying poorly (tomorrow) ?

So we fly first thing tomorrow on a family holiday (me, hubby and two kids <6).

A week ago I started with cold and have had horrid sinus/general cold symptoms. Went to the doctors got a steroid spray (they were thoroughly disinterested as I didn’t have a temperature) but the sinus pain was so bad I felt sick. The steroid spray did very little, I’ve been struggling all week. Doesn’t seem to be improving and awful post nasal drip (tmi sorry). I just feel rubbish but it’s been a week now usually I shake things off or they at least improve. I’ve spent today in bed covered in Vicks and felt awfully sick.

I said to hubby I didn’t think I’d manage it tomorrow. I struggle with my sinuses on planes at the best of times and it can be really painful. He looked at me like I was nuts because it’s ’just a cold’.

We have insurance but given I’m ’not that unwell’ and the doctors shrugged it off I doubt we’d be able to claim on it. Hubby thinks I’m at the end of it and will start to feel better in the next couple of days so should just push through. I do push through things quite well usually but I just feel grotty and so disappointed that it’s a week in and I’m still this rubbish!

Hate this sh*t if your unwell don’t fly, my elderly mother was hospitalised and on oxygen for weeks after catching an illness on a flight. Selfish

She didn't catch something before she flew, at the airport, or when she arrived?

Not similar at all, and I'm surprised decongestants weren't suggested by your doctor. Definitely grab some at the airport if you can get any before then.

This^. My son has been prescribed antibiotics from a pharmacist

Dogmum6 · 11/08/2026 10:26

Have you tried anti histamines? And lots and lots of water ? Also the ginger shot you can buy is really good for clearing sinus. Plus I had that Sterimar salt spray. But drinking loads and loads and loads often does it (add lots of soup for salt etc )

I vomit really badly on ibuprofen so I’ve been scared to take sudofed as worry same thing would happen. I’d rather have the sinuses than be throwing up but I’m not sure if it’s similar or not??

Sudafed is very different to nsaids like ibuprofen so shouldn't make you vomit. Take paracetamol and sudafed or lemsip. It's 2 hours.

It’s such an odd one because I’m not snotty at all and it doesn’t hurt when I bend down or lean forward etc which has always been agony in the past when I’ve had sinus issues.

Ive not had a temperature, cough, sore throat etc I’m literally just in pain between my eyebrows and nose with horrific post nasal drip (which I’ve never had before but hate).

My husband suffers the same. He gave a kidney so cannot take the tablets. Speak to pharmacist and get the nose spray instead. Works a treat and does not effect your stomach.

Think very carefully about doing this. I once did exactly the same with same symptoms and was totally deaf upon landing for 24 hours, then deaf in one ear for the next 48 hours. Then I had to fly home and it started all over again 🙃

I felt I had to go as it was a vital work trip. It went well, happily - industry colleagues found it "charming" that I was ploughing on once I was only deaf in one ear... (!)

This happens to me about 75% of the times that I fly. Has done all my life.

GotMarriedInCornwall · 11/08/2026 06:04

I had this earlier this year. Felt rotten for weeks. Pain as well as earache and a completely blocked ear and the most awful taste in my mouth. Eventually went to the doctors and they said sinusitis isn’t something that goes away in a few days, it can take weeks.
She said there was no point in giving me antibiotics because they probably wouldn’t do much and said the best thing would be to use a saline spray to clean out the sinus passages.
All in all it lasted around 5/6 weeks.

Passthecake30 · 11/08/2026 05:53

OP if you get post nasal drip often, try cutting out dairy for a while and seeing if it improves (obv find other ways of getting calcium in your diet)

Depends how long is your family holiday. If you are that bad and your holidays are for a week, i would let them fly and catch another flight a day or two after. Or worst come worst, let them go and have fun!

I suffer with sinusitus and have flown when I thought it was just a cold. I survived of course but the pain was quite bad and didnt stop once the flight was over. Negative bit out of the way my advice would be to go and then utilise your insurance to see a doctor once there and you should be prescribed the antibiotics that are needed to clear sinus infections xx

Two things:

  1. I’ve traveled by plane with sinusitis twice. It was actually nice up in the air, but the landing was terrible - really bad sinus pain, and then I was half-deaf in both ears for around 24h. Was it great? No. But I did it again at a later date (as said, twice) because in the grand scheme of things…

  2. The pharmacist can prescribe you antibiotics for sinusitis if you’ve already tried a steroid spray and it’s not helped (at least if you are in England).

can I add # 3 to your list:
buy Sterimar which is basically sea water. It helps clear out sinuses, it’s great for anyone with hayfever to wash out the pollen and you don’t need a prescription for it.

It is really good stuff in addition to the antibiotics and steroids. A member of the family uses this combination as they suffer from regular sinusitis and it works very well.

This sounds like what I’ve had. I was stuck next to a selfish woman who was sneezing, coughing and blowing her nose on a three hour flight, with no mask.

Two days into the holiday, I started feeling ill. Horrendous headache, no energy, dizziness, no appetite. I then developed blocked sinuses and blocked ears. I had to dose myself up with cold and flu medicine, although it didn’t feel like a cold.
The flight home wasn’t great as my ears were so blocked. Take off was fine but landing was really painful. I was still ill ten days after, so did a GP consultation and was prescribed antibiotics and a steroid nose spray for sinusitis. I ended up having a week off work and lost 4lbs in weight.
It’ll be three weeks on Wednesday and I still don’t feel 100%. I’m still really tired and lacking energy with minimal appetite. I think it was Covid that morphed into sinusitis. I haven’t felt so rough in a long time.
I think you’ll need antibiotics.

…do people really expect others to cancel their holidays for a cold?

Like I get what you’re saying about how unwell you were, Covid etc. But you didn’t know that at the time when she was coughing and sneezing - for all you knew, it was just a cold (and there’s no way of knowing whether your illness came from this woman anyway).

It’s like the people who expect you to keep your child off school for every sniffle. It’s not realistic. Vomiting, fever etc, absolutely keep them off school/miss the flight/whatever. A common cold? Sorry, life goes on.

Agree with this. As someone who has suffered numerous sinus infections, they can get alot worse leading to infections needing antibiotics such as an ear infection and that’s without taking a flight. Use saline, steam inhalations but consult with GP urgently regardless of whether you go or not.

I’m afraid ‘Hubby’ is wrong. Some People are still very ill with Covid and are isolated in hospital.

Sorry I thought you were concerned specifically because it may be Covid. I’d wear a mask regardless if I thought I was contagious with anything. Just in the plane though with the recycled air and all. I’m not phased about whether it’s covid or not

You’ve probably already flown @SENSummer but try Otrivine sinusitis nasal spray. You can get it from any chemist/boots etc. This time of year take an anti histamine daily too - they’re not just for hayfever, you could have an allergy to something.
I’ve suffered with my sinuses for years and the two things I mentioned above I never go anywhere without now x

Smudgesmith · 10/08/2026 21:08

I'd try otravine. That's what I was given by an ent and then a couple of years later by a pharmacist (this may) after sinus issues. It helped and I was ok on the flight. I was fine within a day or two.

Unsure if insurance will cover this. My mum is still trying to get paid out from a holiday that she needed to drive to (middle of knowhere) after a broken wrist. They are quibbling everything. 4 months ago as well. Its just ridiculous.

Please do mask though, as otherwise you could ruin other people's holidays too. And I mean a proper n95 and not one that is worn over your mouth and not your nose.

RP2211 · 10/08/2026 20:58

It would have been too late to claim on insurance anyway. You can't claim for a cold!

dreamingofgoodhair · 10/08/2026 19:49

SENSummer · 09/08/2026 19:48

Honestly hubby says Covid isn’t a big deal anymore, no precautions are taken even in the hospitals it’s basically just another common cold/virus like all the rest. I asked if it might be Covid and his response was ‘probably there’s so many strains of it now’ I asked if I should test and he said no there’s no point. Sorry I wasn’t avoiding that question.

I’m afraid ‘Hubby’ is wrong. Some People are still very ill with Covid and are isolated in hospital.

AgileMentor · 10/08/2026 19:40

Sounds like you need antibiotics. Grab some from a pharmacy and then go to the airport. You’ve got sinusitis not sickness and the shits.

YouSawBrigadoon · 10/08/2026 19:23

2 measly hours? I would just suck it up and get on with it.

Foolish1984 · 10/08/2026 19:21

Imightbeinthewronghere · 09/08/2026 17:35

Nothing to do with disease progression, or an infection that was already brewing??

Highly unlikely, given that she was given a full health check before she flew and then ended up with the exact same symptoms as the other passengers 🤨
If you look up Leukaemia you’ll see how incredibly susceptible they are to contagious illnesses, especially after chemo.
