"Now what?" Obviously remortgage the house. Leave the furniture and any children in that room, they belong to the spider now.

A quick Google but there is lots more on this online

Thankyou for that 😊

Could be something to look into a bit more

Isinglass20 · 10/08/2026 20:45

Oh honestly- huge. It’s not a tarantula which dinky die Aussies (the old people) kept them as pets to eat the mozzies and other insects. Yours is a garden spider with long legs. I had one called’ Fred’. Every evening at about 10 pm he’d run across the room. In the end I decided that the garden was his real home so got a tumbler and sheet of cardboard, popped it over him and went into the garden put the tumbler on the grass and he ran away and everyone lived happily ever after.

CalmGreenWasp · 10/08/2026 20:35

You could use some deodorant and a lighter. Going at it Ripley in Aliens style usually does the trick..

FairKoala · 10/08/2026 20:11

Move

It’s Mr Spiders house now

We did this in Spain when I spotted a cockroach in my ground floor bedroom

We shut the door and wedged a towel in the gap between door and fooor and I slept in dd’s room all holiday

Yogabearmous · 10/08/2026 20:02

Give it a name and it will seem more friendly. I hate them , but weirdly once I have named them they don’t see so bad.

Colin and Steve are quite popular in our house… we have also had Gary, Larry and Winston.

This is a difficult if you have an absolute fear, phobia then in your eyes you are taking reasonable action. Not sure what Country you are … in terms of size and danger??. My son and I absolutely hate spiders ( and moths) .For not a real beast ( thinking tarantula) a plastic beaker and a postcard plus piece of very firm thinish card work a treat… if you can bare it. Cover said spider with cup hold firm slide firm card under the beaker. Open a door carefully lift card and spider with the flat of your hand throw out! We don’t like flies either!

No way will OP be doing that!

Seek medical attention for this phobia. There is nothing wrong with spiders. We all eat a few in our lives in our sleep.

That thing about eating spiders is an urban myth.

Is this treatment available on the NHS? , I can’t afford private therapy, I already have lots of medical appointments due to various conditions I have, to add more would cause me immense amounts of stress.

I’d need someone to always be available to come with me. It’s not as easy as just telling someone to just seek help.

Grown adults being scared of spiders is just so embarrassingly pathetic. They are harmless, it's not like living somewhere where tarantulas are running round. Do you show your children this ridiculous behaviour? I really hope not.
Just pick it up with a tissue and put it out of the window for crying out loud. The most it could do is tickle you a bit.

You really don’t get it, do you?

I can’t even look at a picture, and I hate typing the word as an emoji appears. Just out of interest, would you be totally fearless of picking up a snake or wasp, or anything really that some people are afraid of?

If you're suffering from this mental illness, which is what a phobia is, then not taking responsibility and seeking treatment for it, plenty of which is available, is totally self indulgent.

People who say they've got a phobia and don't seek treatment must enjoy having the phobia in some kind of way.

There is help available to overcome this phobia- why not seek it?

Maybe the cost of these courses is prohibitive for some people.

It certainly is for me, is there help available on the NHS?

I have 3 auto immune conditions that I have a lot of appointments for, not sure I could cope with anymore!

Well aren’t you lovely?

It doesn’t matter if you’re scared of something or not. Some of us really are scared of spiders. It’s not something we’re happy about, and we can’t help it.

I’d rather have a phobia of them, than be an unkind person with no feeling or compassion for other people.

Absolutely this. I can't believe the smug comments on here. For people who don't have this phobia, lucky you! It may not be rational but nonetheless it is a very real fear.

Whether it's recognised still doesn't stop it from being an embarrassingly pathetic phobia.
A phobia such as fear of flying is something that's more understandable as planes can crash and you can die. But in the UK being afraid of spiders is self-indulgent stupid behaviour.

Rude. People can’t help having a phobia.

I totally agree, I hate the eight legged freaks, I can’t help it.

I’ve reported that post as it’s very unkind and unhelpful to someone who’s scared of them (or anything else)

inappropriateraspberry · 10/08/2026 18:19

Jesus Christ 🙄

Lizchapman · 10/08/2026 18:17

He’s probably long gone. I had a HUGE one - size of my hand- in the hallway a few months ago. Left him be and have never seen him since.

Timeforachange26 · 10/08/2026 18:17

What? Just put on your big girl pants and remove it. Honestly some people

JJWT · 10/08/2026 18:17

Well that's a waste of masking tape! There will be many, ways for a spider to get in and out of that room, not just the door, eg skirting boards, floorboards etc. There are many spiders in and out of all houses/buildings every day besides the single one you happened to see. I realise phobias are real but you sound unhinged. You are going to have to get someone else to look for it and remove it if they find it but they probably wont find it. It is extremely unlikely to do you any physical harm. Perhaps you need some cbt or something to prevent any further psychological harm. I hope you don't have kids who get to see this reaction. I think they are more likely to end up burdened in the same way if they grow up alongside a key caregiver who has this issue.

We have a squishing device! It's actually this https://amzn.eu/d/036hGxrl

But it's only been used for this once & is now the squisher!!! Heavily arachnophobic house, no man to help!!!

Sorry, not as good as the one I recommended, plus you shouldn’t kill them!
