This is why I have a cat. Spider = tasty snack for kitty.

StormGazing · 09/08/2026 14:35

If my DH isn’t home (resident spider catcher) then it gets a hoover-ectomy

Do you know what's really pathetic? Grown adults who don't know what a phobia is.

Grow up?!

People have insect phobias, the same as some people have phobias about blood or needles. No need for the sarky response.

It’s not an animal though is it.

Good grief.

BranClaps · 09/08/2026 14:31

I assume you aren’t in the UK and it’s a deadly species?

Why are some of you being so mean ? I thought everyone was scared of something . I am TERRIFIED of rats . And I mean terrified. Even typing the word makes my skin crawl.
So just because YOU are not afraid of spiders does not mean that others feel the same . So immature and egocentric not to be able to understand that others feel and see things differently to you . It's playground behaviour .

Agree with you. Spiders don’t bother me in the slightest, but the contents of my shopping bags ended up all over Morrisons car park because a wasp decided to join me. I’m really trying to get over my phobia by learning about them, but they terrify me 😱

ChocolateCinderToffee · 09/08/2026 14:29

You need to make sure you are well clothed, trousers tucked into socks.

  1. Open a window wide
  2. Get a large mug and put that over the spider
  3. Slide something thin and stiff eg a baking sheet or piece of card under the mug to trap the spider
  4. Carry the covered mug to the window at arms length and throw the spider out
  5. GIN

I have lived on my own for the last 40 years and this is my technique. The only time it failed was when I had a spider so big, none of my mugs would have fitted over the top of it. I had to use a pudding bowl.

These days, I've got quite blase: I put a sock over my hand and pick it up.

Seek medical attention for this phobia. There is nothing wrong with spiders. We all eat a few in our lives in our sleep.

I misread this the first time. I thought you said they all eat a few of our sheep... and I thought... God they must be massive 😂

Doradormouse · 09/08/2026 14:29

Why not make a noise like a juicy fly and when it comes to investigate grab it with a Tupperware box ?

Sorry, OP, I would come over and rescue both of you from this situation, but I don't know where you live!

A spider, especially a large one, out in view in the middle of the day, definitely does not want to be there, either. It could be injured, or ill, or was wandering around last night looking for a mate, and lost track of time. If you leave it alone, it will wander off as soon as it thinks it's safe, and hide in the nearest hole in your skirting boards. It doesn't want to interact with you as much as you don't want to interact with it!

You haven't said what kind of large spider. If it's one of those "daddy longlegs" that are basically transparent, then they belong in your house, and will try to eat all your other spiders. If it's a large Tegenaria, then it's also a house spider, but they will also live in sheds or fences.

If you can't wait, just carefully put a glass over it, slide a postcard or something underneath (careful of its legs), and throw it outside.

It's waiting for you to go away, and until it doesn't feel any more vibrations, it will stay still and pretend you don't see it. That's its only defence.

Please don't kill it.

I love spiders. Especially tiny jumping spiders.

ed. for spelling

WineCharm · 09/08/2026 13:24

Burn the house down or, if you're not feeling that dramatic, flame thrower.

😆

Dontcallmescarface · 09/08/2026 14:27

It baffles me how anyone in the UK can be scared of a house spider, it's not going to kill you. Just leave it be.

I'm assuming that you are being facetious/comical, OP?

You've clearly not go a spider phobia.

Of course it's an animal.

Thindog · 09/08/2026 14:22

Totally understand. One of the main reasons I got married was to get my spiders dealt with. I don’t like to kill them though and now I have a wide mouthed jar I can usually place over the offending arachnid, then slide a stiff card under and remove it that way. Shudders.

I agree, it’s such a bloody horrible phobia. I’m leaving the skinny spiders around at the moment because they eat the big ones. Somehow I’m not very scared of those. If you’re not phobic and love spiders, then you really can’t be helpful to somebody who is paralysed with fear!

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 09/08/2026 14:20

Ghostiescotchie · 09/08/2026 14:13

I sympathise , I’d just go in armed with the hoover attachment and suck it up. Keep the hoover on for a bit after to make sure it’s a gonner

This is what I do. I use the long attachment and, if possible, get a child to press the button on the hoover when I’m within range, so I just concentrate on the spider, not on technical doings.

Bullying, rage baiting troll! Leave her alone she has a phobia.

keepincool · 09/08/2026 14:19

Aww, @lightclock , I get it. I used to be scared of catching spiders but, when she was little, my niece was even more scared of them than I was. Being the adult, I tried to show her they were harmless by catching them with a glass and bit of card and releasing them outside (mainly to stop the hysterics and screaming). I've worked my way up from catching small spiders to catching big ones. Someone once told me it was unlucky to kill a spider, not that I'd want to kill one anyway.

I see fewer spiders since getting a cat - and thanks to him I'm fairly adept at catching and releasing the 'gifts' he used to bring me (he no longer hunts).

DN is now 36 and still screams when she sees a spider. I bought her one of these types of plug one Christmas and she said it seemed to work -

Rude. People can’t help having a phobia.

True, I’m not at all bothered by spiders but moths and to a lesser extent butterflies send me freaky, albeit maybe less so since being a parent. I know where the phobia comes from and it is about the dust on their wings getting onto me. Even writing that makes me feel sick.
Why you have a phobia and to what degree is an entirely person thing and shouldn’t be mocked or belittled. Feel lucky you’re not suffering.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/08/2026 14:18

Friendlygingercat · 09/08/2026 14:09

Some people are just insanely scared of multi legged insects. Many years ago I was staying with friends in Morocco (1970s) when a big daddy-long-legs type insect got stuck in the back combing of my friends hair. She went hysterical. Her husband had to hold her in a bear hug while I fished out the insect and let it go. It must be very difficult living in tropical countries if you are scared of harmless flying insects.

Generally, they aren't. Arachnophobia (and similar reactions to insects, etc) are a feature of comfortable, Western lives.

TheFormidableMrsC · 09/08/2026 14:18

I’m spider phobic but had to get used to it as I find myself living alone and I can do it now with a few hot sweats and a lot of swearing. Kindly, it could be anywhere now, they are not trained to use doors. I’d either spray the skirtings with Raid that will kill it on contact or just wait for it to reappear and then hoover it up. Longer term you need a spider catcher device.
