Whats the point of consent and asking permission if you get lied to

Whats the point of consent and permission ? friends meal and they cover the cost, they said here is x amount get what you want, so permission is asked what the limit is eg £20 and i can get whatever food / takeaway with it, the yes permission is given that i can buy what i want within the budget.

turns out a day or two after wards a sarcastic comment was made because i had 2 jacket potatoes with different toppings, so i said why is that an issue and it turns out that they still thought id get one instead of two ,

so i said i asked permission of what the budget was and i did ask what i could get then all i got was oh id still thought you would get 1 so i said why then say i can get x why not just say and be honest.

i guess this is more me moaning but why do people do this, say yes to x then they actually want you do to x instead its like why ?

before anyone asks we usually do a weekly meal out, and no they are fairly wealthy

I do believe you have autism. So, OK, does this help?

Lunch is on me
They're offering to buy you one lunch
At the specific café
While you're with them.

Up to £20
They're offering to pay up to £20 for your one lunch.

Anything you want
Any single lunch up to £20.
They're not, for instance, saying you can go next door and spend their £20 on a new jumper.
It is a limited offer of a single lunch, £20 or less.

What you could do
Ask: I really want jacket potato but they're a bit small. Is it okay if I get two?

What you should also do
Insist on paying sometimes.
Don't ask or argue, just pay.

whippersnapper55 · Yesterday 18:48

Two jacket potatoes with toppings is just plain greedy, which is probably what they thought. Just pay for your own meal from now on. No idea why you would accept a friend paying for your meal every week!

murasaki · Yesterday 18:48

I'm not someone who thinks the infamous mumsnet chicken can last a week, but one jacket potato with cheese and beans would be plenty for lunch. I couldn't eat two.

Op, you played it badly. Next time, you need to say from the start it's your treat. Then you can order whatever you like as you are paying. And I bet you wouldn't order two....

Wouldn't a snack be fine? You are not paying and ordering two seems rude tbh.

but i had asked as long as its under budget could i get what i want

but when they say have what ever you want and the budget is x then why should how many be a factor ? as long as its under budget

Pay your own meels and things are sorted.

MoHarris · Yesterday 18:47

To me the whole thing is strange.

Why is the other person paying every week? I go out with a friend and we take turns it’s not the same person every week.
Also find it very strange you asked for a budget. You just pick a meal. Asking for a budget seems greedy to me.

ShetlandishMum · Yesterday 18:47

MrsOctaviaCharlotteSmythe · Yesterday 18:33

yes i would because to me one on its own and the size they were is not a meal its more a snack

true but then why not say that why say get what you want ect because to me 2 poatoes and toppings is not 2 meals, yes to some it may be

Rightly or wrongly, it looks greedy. It’s certainly unusual.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · Yesterday 18:47

OP I think you're getting a hard time. It's not like you ordered two fillet steaks with chips and truffle sauce.

Also, everyone has an appetite of a sparrow on here so to be able to eat TWO medium potatoes is shocking 😂

It seems that you take things quite literally and perhaps your friend was having a laugh with you about having two potatoes rather than being annoyed about it.

The only thing I would suggest is insist on paying next time as a nice treat for your friend. And you can order what you like because you are paying ☺️

People are really piling on here, it’s quite unpleasant to read. OP checked the budget, made an effort to stay under budget, and is now getting a hammering from so many of you. No need for any of this. OP was just looking for a bit of reassurance. I see no problem with two baked potatoes. At all.

But clearly it was a bit of a problem to the friend who was buying.

I think OP needs a bit of steering as to social norms, as she might well piss off this friend and lose them, if she continues to keep taking meals from them and never reciprocating. It's so weird to be asking what budget and never treating back in return.

Thingsthatgo · Yesterday 18:45

If you had said, ‘I fancy jacket potato and I am really hungry - do you mind if I order two?’ They probably would have said, yes that’s fine. But the way you went about it - asking for your food budget from someone who treats you to food every single week, seems grabby. It appears to your very generous benefactor that you are trying to get the most out of their kindness - milking them.
That is why you should not order two meals (even if you think they are not filling, they are still a meal).

ShetlandishMum · Yesterday 18:45

MrsOctaviaCharlotteSmythe · Yesterday 18:39

if they asked me like i asked them two questions
whats the budget
and can i get what i want
then if they did get eg 3 pizzas under budget then id be ok because thats what i said they could do

But obviously your friend thinks different than you.

NorthernPaws · Yesterday 18:45

Unless you are a child,I don’t think it’s normal to ask someone what the budget limit is when they are treating you. Normal etiquette would be to have one meal and thank them afterwards (and probably return the favour next time).

trailerT · Yesterday 18:44

Why don’t you treat them next time by way of an apology

OP, literally asked if she was being unreasonable, and so the responses she has had are fine.

I guess there’s the option not to read the thread if the replies are so unpleasant.

Newbutoldfather · Yesterday 18:44

From AI one medium sized topped baked potato is about 300 calories. Is that really lunch/dinner to most of you?!

I think what feels weird to most on here is one friend asking a budget to another. But we don’t know the nature of the friendship, so maybe it is fine in context.

But it is also rude to make an offer and then openly criticise someone who takes it up, even if they miss the correct etiquette.

BeardySchnauzer · Yesterday 18:43

It’s pretty obvious the friend is feeling taken advantage of

Its a limit, not a target , do you see the difference? Ordering two lunches is weird, and i can understand why they thought it was. They are very nice to you, amd you took the piss. They may stop being so nice. Insist on paying for one per month at the very least.

Calling them tight when they just you lunch weekly is so rude.

And you ordered two lunches.

Now given I do believe you have autism, that's not an excuse for your behaviour. When you offer to buy, you need to insist one week. If you did that, how would you feel if they bought two lunches?

if they asked me like i asked them two questions

This is totally the opposite to what I’d do. Someone else is paying I get the cheapest smallest thing I can find so as not to put them out even if it means I’m hungry or it’s not what I wanted. You don’t take advantage of someone else’s kindness. They probably didn’t put restrictions on it to be polite and you should also be polite not seeing it as an all you can eat up to x value or a company offering free vouchers, this is your friend being overly generous. Also it’s your turn to pay for the next however many times you go out.

MatildaTheCat · Yesterday 18:39

So if you decided to pay for once and your friend checked the budget and you said £20, she went up and came back with 20 bags of crisps, what would you say or think?

Her argument is that she wasn’t actually hungry but does really like crisps so stocked up for a couple of weeks, thanks @MrsOctaviaCharlotteSmythe .

You might view that differently and think she was a cheeky fucker.

But you didn’t specify what she could buy because it’s usually perfectly obvious that hat you buy one item for lunch when having a hot meal.

category12 · Yesterday 18:37

MrsOctaviaCharlotteSmythe · Yesterday 18:35

its more a weekly catchup and they offered to begin with and even if i offer they still say its there treat so then i wanted specifics so in theory i didnt take the biscuit, all i expected was why give an answer that apparently grants permission, and then retrospectively apply a restriction that was never communicated?

Are they a parent-figure to you?
