Things you could afford but choose not to spend on?

A fancier car.
A bigger house
A more expensive postcode.
More expensive food shopping.
professional beauty treatments and hair cuts (for me)
Extravagant celebrations for life events e.g weddings, balloon arches etc

We go on multiple holidays a year and save a fortune of all of the above.

It’s not about need, more about want. I enjoy a drink and a snack whilst watching the movie, I don’t need one, but I want one and enjoy it.

we go to an Everyman cinema with sofas, order a couple of glasses of wine, some nibbles. But certainly not as we need it. We then go out for dinner usually. Again we don’t need to, we can easily eat at home. But we wish to.

Arguably if we take thay line, no one needs to go to the cinema, we can all wait and see the movie when it’s on tv.

surely life is about more than just meeting our needs.

Business class, decent single car, great food are non negotiable.

Second car, nails Botox eyelashes etc I would never want.

Fine dining restaurants.
I'd rather have a decent sized plateful of good home cooked food at my local golf club or garden centre than a minuscule portion of some fancy muck at a pretentious posh restaurant, for a fraction of the price.

Main shop Lidl then go to Waitrose for the nice stuff Lidl doesn't sell. Could afford to just go to Waitrose but was brought up dirt poor and I can't justify a whole Waitrose shop .
Gardener . I love gardening
Cleaner . I'd rather just do it and spend the money on other stuff

I buy lots of the things that you don’t!

But it is very rare that I’ll pay for a cup of tea when out and about. The cost of it! And don’t even start me on places that charge extra for a larger cup of it!
I can make a better cuppa at home.

Because it’s an enjoyable experience. I am with you though, on not shelling out for expensive cinema snacks.

A TV or a TV licence (so can’t even watch iPlayer).

Five-star hotels. There's nothing wrong with a hotel providing a pool/gym/beauty salon/business centre for its clients, but I know I won't use any of those facilities and don't feel inclined to subsidise them for those who do.

Designer clothes I don't give a rat's arse about brand names my jeans cost ten dollars 😊 and I like them ❤️

So true to me a hotel is just somewhere to sleep 😴 Im not paying for a bunch of crap I don't want or will never use

I agree. If I see someone wearing jeans I can't tell if they cost £20 or £200.

Some people have to have the designer name or logo visible so that everyone can see how much they've spent 🙄

I have an 18 year old car which will probably outlive me.
I don't want to go on longhaul holidays ...but enjoy short breaks ( 14 this year)

A lot of "grooming". I dont do botox, fillers, hairdresser hair dye, eyebrow microblading etc. Not my bag.

Could easily afford all of these but genuinely do not think they are worth what they are charged at, i can find better use for that money.

I am willing to spend on:

• holidays
• having a large house with a big garden in a desirable area (holds its value)
• my children doing whatever hobbies & activities they want
• good food & wine at home

Getting my nails done.

Getting all the massive dents and scuffs on my car repaired.

Give a shit about neither.

Won't spend a lot on:

Mobile phone. Mine is 2nd hand and basic. As long as it will call, text and take reasonable photos I don't care about any other fancy features or what others think of it.

Luxury accommodation on holiday. We self-cater in a caravan - it's just a base as far as my husband and I are concerned.

Streaming services. We make do with what's free.

Car. Don't care what car we have as long as it gets us from A-B in tolerable comfort. Current one is over 10 years old.

Gym/ other paid-for exercise. Walking is good enough for me.

Alcohol. I'm teetotal.

Will spend a lot on:

Antique/vintage items
Jewellery
Cosmetics, fragrance, hair and skin care (although not treatments, what I buy for myself)
My cats
Nice food, e.g. expensive cheese
Tobacco

Botox, new cars, alcohol, designer clothes, hair salon trips, new kitchen/bathroom. The more I have in money, the more I realise a minimalist lifestyle is better. My car is 16 years old on a street full of brand new BMWs and Audis and Mercedes. Yet half the street claim they can’t afford to get to the end of the month financially. I’ll never understand it. The UK is really extreme for keeping up with the Jones’s type living even when you can’t afford it. Madness.

Replacement double-glazing (current frames are wood, installed 35+ years ago). New frames would arguably look more aesthetically pleasing on the outside, but we don't live on the outside🤷‍♂️.
Oh, and same with new cars (current car is 2014 and still going strong).
