Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

That sounds like a perfect proposal to me.

My proposal happened on my living room floor, half way through quiz show, a few minutes after my husband got home from work, so the fact you got taken out for a drive is a treat in my eyes 🤣

It sounds romantic, special and thoughtful so tell your friends to fuck off.

Many congratulations!!!

I think anyone who says they want a performative "proposal" is vacuous and shallow. Ignore them and reconsider whether they're real friends to you.

Um this. They obviously don't understand anything about what marriage is about so you can safely dismiss their opinions.

I think it sounds incredibly sweet (but then my DH proposed by saying one day while lying in bed just as I was drifting off to sleep: "so should we get married then?" 😆)

Simonjt · 08/08/2026 21:20

Congratulations, thats lovely.

If you love some one it really doesn’t matter how they propose, my husband asked me when we were in bed (not sexual!), it was no more or less special than any other type of proposal.

whatisheupto · 08/08/2026 21:52

He thought it through, he planned what to do, he bought a ring, he actually followed through and proposed. Not to mention remembering where he first said I love you. Also he listened to you and respected your preferences re not doing a showy proposal. You were on cloud 9 so he got it just right because he knows you and loves you.
That is 7 big fat boxes ticked.
Many, many men do not manage that.

SquirrelGG · 08/08/2026 22:04

It was a beautiful proposal, and congratulations.

Your friends are horrible, and they would be ex-friends if this happened to me.

People who want big displays and Insta pictures are doing it for the wrong reasons. It's very romantic that your fiancé remembered where he first. Said he loved you and took you back there to propose. He'd also listened to you saying you didn't like big or public proposals, so kudos to him. Sounds like a keeper OP. Can't say the same about your so called friends though.

This. In spades.
It was a lovely, thoughtful romantic proposal.
Wishing you all the best for a very long and happy marriage.

So many of these posts should say “friends” not friends. I think it sounds lovely: mine was similarly low key, thank f.

38 years ago we were walking up the street where my husband lived. All of a sudden he turned round and said ‘ I can’t live without you, marry me’.
No fancy planned proposal and no thought at all - but perfect at the time.
Your partner sounds wonderful, your friends do not.

The song On the street where you live by Nat King Cole comes to mind . 😊

Itchysidefoot · 09/08/2026 14:14

I’d be seriously questioning my judgement in people if my best friends had suddenly, after years of never having displayed such awful behaviour, suddenly all chose this moment to behave like this.

I remember that from M Fair Lady.

Jealous bitches, fuck the pair of them and super Congratulations to you and your fiancé….sounds like a magical proposal…be happy xxxx

Aiming4Optimistic · 09/08/2026 16:09

Just because you've known people for a long time, it doesn't mean they are genuinely your friends. Those women have no manners! If they truly cared about you, they would have been kind and not pissed all over your joy.

I think his proposal was romantic and sweet. And it shows he knows you.

Any idiot can propose at the top of the Eiffel Tower or in a crowded restaurant - it shows no imagination. Performative proposals are about showing off so that other people think they have a deep relationship. What your fiance did was authentic to your relationship.

lulubalu · 09/08/2026 16:18

jealous beatches

maybe leave out the bit about being in your pyjamas in future storytelling

LadyBeeOfTheHive · 09/08/2026 17:44

CONGRATULATIONS!
Your engagement sounds perfect, really sweet and thoughtful.

My husband proposed to me to his mothers attic when we were bringing down Christmas decorations, not the most romantic but it’s definitely memorable - almost 17years married.

Mcoco · 09/08/2026 17:45

Sounds to me that he is a lovely man and gave the proposal a great deal of consideration. He sounds romantic and thoughtful. U have a lovely fiancee congratulations OP he will make a fantastic husband. Your friends sound shallow ignore them!

user1485851222 · 09/08/2026 17:46

Congratulations 🎊. I think it was a lovely proposal and if you have children they will love seeing and hearing about the road their dad proposed in. Ignore your so called friends. Have fun planning your wedding & don't ask them to be bridesmaids.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 09/08/2026 17:46

They are not youre friends and they are clearly jealous.

Moreholidaysthanjudithchalmers · 09/08/2026 17:50

Congratulations Op. It sounds really lovely and perfect for you.
Don’t let them rubbish your wedding plans.

GlassHalfEmpty70 · 09/08/2026 17:51

Ditch the so-called best friends. They're not! How horrible and unkind.
Congratulations to you - it sounds like the perfect proposal to me 💜

Bunny65 · 09/08/2026 18:09

Perhaps you should tell them their response was pretty mean. Not everyone wants a film production instagram proposal. You could say you were thrilled with the way it went and you're sad they can't share in your happiness and are making fun of you. It says more about them than you.

SunshineAndFizz · 09/08/2026 18:11

Jealous.

OchreReader · 09/08/2026 18:13

Congratulations 🥂 and ignore your so called friends. Their behaviour is childish and uncalled for. It was a lovely thing your boyfriend did. Very sweet.

Ive always found couples with big shows for things like engagements are far less likely to have deep long lasting relationships. My husband proposed watching tv, no ring yet, and we just celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary on Friday.

Wishing you all the best for the future ❤️

jdb9803 · 09/08/2026 18:14

Congratulations - you sound like my daughter who got engaged in March - a big public proposal would be her idea of hell - they went to a place where they hike together with the dog and he proposed there - she was over the moon
Your fiance knows you and found a place that was meaningful to you both - your so called friends are awful and utterly jealous of your happiness

bgi · 09/08/2026 18:18

They are not friends.

congrats!

Scout2016 · 09/08/2026 18:18

Congratulations on your engagement.

Commiserations on your friends. Sorry OP, really unkind of them. I think their reactions suggest you have grown apart and no longer share values.
