Cancelled on friend due to illness, she wasn't happy

ThatLovingNavyLion · Today 09:46

I was meant to travel to see a friend for the day about 1.5 hours away. I rarely get ill touch wood, but typically I got a sickness bug the day before I was meant to meet her! I was being sick multiple times, no appetite and felt weak, like my limbs were stiff and I couldn't walk much.
I had to cancel sadly, there was no way I could travel in that state. I hate doing this but I had no choice, and I told her I could do the next couple of weekends so that she knew I still really wanted to see her.

She was cold in her reply and didn't agree to the other weekend, so unfortunately I think she thought I was lying/couldn't be bothered. I've never done that to her before so it's not like I've got form for it. I asked another friend for advice and she said "Yeah I can completely see why she's pissed off."

If i kept cancelling I could see that, but it was my only time. Sadly they think I was lying, there's not much I can do. Was I supposed to go and throw up on her? Do feel bad but unsure what else to do.

People get sick. Maybe a follow up text next week are you free any evening. If she being flaky just leave it at that

zingally · Today 14:29

Unfortunately, people get sick. But by the same token, your friend is allowed to feel disappointed. Likely she'd been looking forward to this visit, and it's now not going ahead. I think being a bit cool in her response is to be expected.

It's just one of those things.

Coconutter24 · Today 14:12

I would understand her being disappointed that you couldn’t meet up, I can’t understand why your friends would suggest she’d be pissed off though. It’s not like you chose to be throwing up, it can’t be helped

sonjadog · Today 14:12

I sent something similar to a friend just a couple of days ago when she cancelled. I was in the middle of doing something else when I got here message. I sent a follow up the next day when I realised it might have come across as rather blunt. I wouldn't read too much into it for now.

Pumpkinmagic · Today 14:12

People are weird. I once cancelled on a day out with a work friend at short notice, due to similar. She was very cold with me and not sympathetic at all. She was a cake baker in her spare time. The following week she bought cup cakes in to work, gave one to every single person in the office, except me. She never spoke to me again. I was really upset at the time and still years later cannot understand how anyone can be so horrible.

Sartre · Today 14:05

Almost definitely isn’t about you but her. Maybe other people have let her down lots recently and this was a straw camel moment.

PrettyLittleRose · Today 14:04

Doesn't sound cold and unfeeling to me. Confused 'OK, no problem' is short and to the point. Maybe she was in a rush. Even so, some people do send short, succinct messages, not everyone sends an essay. Maybe she didn't have time to arrange another time/date at that moment. Message her again later @ThatLovingNavyLion and say 'when shall we meet next then?' and give her your available dates. No point in licking your wounds and stressing, and being all offended when she's done nothing wrong!

I send messages to my adult DC, and friends, and sometimes get 'bit busy can't get access to my work calendar/diary, will message later.' Sometimes I get nothing, the message is 'read' but they wait 24 hours-48 hours to respond. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong!

From the way you were talking @ThatLovingNavyLion I thought she had messaged 'please your fecking self then! CBA to meet you again, bore off!' Not just 'no problem.' That's an innocuous thing to say, and I'm baffled at the posters saying she was being 'off' and very cold.' Yes, you'd not been well for a day or two, but maybe she's surrounded by people who have had this and that wrong with them, so it didn't register to say 'how are you now? Are you better? etc etc...' As I said, she may have been busy/in a rush.

Enoughofpeopleenough · Today 13:53

It might be that she's had this from other friends recently and she's had enough. She shouldn't take that out on you given that you're not flaky but it's probably bigger than this one instance in her head.

EvieBB · Today 13:52

ThatLovingNavyLion · Today 10:15

It was just very much 'ok. No problem.' With no mention of rearranging.

Yes that's cold. A real friend would understandably be disappointed, but would also wish you well for a speedy recovery and would want to rearrange.

Sorry OP. YANBU.
She may be projecting - and judging you by her own standards!
Hope you're feeling better now.

Ethelspagetti · Today 10:56

Did she prefer for you to pass her the bug?! I’d rather you stayed home and we rearranged it! Leave it a day then message her asking if that other weekend is okay? She’s being stroppy because she felt excited to see you then let down. Maybe someone else keeps letting her down so she’s sensitive to it! You were right not to go. I hope you feel better soon.

patooties · Today 10:38

How often do you see her? If it’s twice a year and you cancelled 18 months ago then I imagine she feels the drift beginning.

Aluna · Today 10:32

Don’t judge people on texts. She may just be busy and not have availability next weekend.

Equally, if she really thinks you’re a liar she’s not your friend.

Deepstone · Today 10:25

It’s obviously disappointing if someone cancels at the last minute, but if the person cancelling is sick, there’s no other option really is there?

It’s completely out of your control and can’t be helped. I’m sure she’d have been much more annoyed if you dragged yourself to the meet-up and infected her with your sickness bug!

Savvysix1984 · Today 10:17

If you’re sick you’re sick. A good friend would know if you’re being genuine.

ThatLovingNavyLion · Today 10:15

Rewis · Today 10:11

What was her response? Im wondering if she send something intended with neutral tone and you feel like it was cold?

SilverPink · Today 10:09

She sounds like someone who cancels regularly on other people and lies about it, which is probably why she assumes everyone else is the same!
She’s a bit of a crap friend if she’s annoyed. Fine to be disappointed but not annoyed, that’s not on.

ThatLovingNavyLion · Today 09:54

I do have a friend who's a frequent canceller myself, and whilst it sometimes can be frustrating she has a number of chronic health issues so I do understand and don't hold it against her at all.

The other friend is someone if I say black she will say white so doesn't surprise me as much but..

Divebar2021 · Today 09:52

What a weirdo. Who would want anyone with a sick bug anywhere near them ? My friend had a really awful sickness bout recently ( went on for a few days ) and she was trying to meet me for tennis. Tennis!!!!! No thank you. Keep your pukey germs to yourself. Your friend is being self centered OP. Did she offer to drop anything off for you op. Did she actually check if you were ok ?

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · Today 09:52

If you were a constant canceller then yes she would have been pissed off

but if you have never then she’s being a heartless mole -as is your other friend

Womanofcustard · Today 09:52

She is not your friend! She doesn’t care about you.

ThatLovingNavyLion · Today 09:51

She may not think I'm lying, but her message was cold and abrupt and she didn't confirm the following weekend.

OP posts:
ThatLovingNavyLion · Today 09:50

The last time was 1.5 years before that, when I slipped and hurt my back! It's certainly not something regular.
