How do I move house AND get a new bed at the same time?

I’m in a right pickle about the best way to move house and get a new bed at the same time.

We MUST get a new bed. It’s not optional. DH is currently sleeping in a little pit created by a separating mattress. We’ve been putting it off because the issues with this mattress started when we moved it into this house and we don’t want to drop £2k on a mattress to then have it suffer in the move again. The bed frame itself is tired, has a rip in it and we want to upgrade to a superking so we have more space when our baby arrives at Christmas.

I can’t work out the best way to coordinate it with moving day. I wanted to order it all and keep it in the garage for the move but the mattresses we like don’t come rolled up and we can’t store a superking mattress flat.

These are the options I can see:

  • Order the divan base to keep in our current garage now and order a mattress once we have exchanged. During the overlap we have two single mattresses we can make do with using on the bed base until then. Get rid of current bed a day or two before completion. If we went for this option, where do we sleep for two nights?
  • Bring the old bed with us and have it assembled, order a new one upon exchange and pay for the recycling service upon delivery. This would be annoying in terms of faff on moving day, disassembling and reassembling and disassembling a bed frame again.
  • Order nothing until exchange and ask one of our sets of parents if we can stay with them for a few days while we get ourselves sorted (both local). Tempting but might be unsettling and obviously we would really like to enjoy our new house.

Some other option? This is occupying far too much of my brain space!

Removers should be able to transport a mattress without damaging it. I’d just order the bed to my current address and have it moved with everything else, if it gets damaged that’s why removers have insurance.

Or take the single mattresses with you and sleep in them for the few days you’re waiting for delivery.

OP, it’s a long time since I moved house, but when I did, we slept on a mattress on the floor for the first couple of weeks until our new bed arrived. It’s not ideal, but it’s OK when you know it’s purely temporary.

I have done this and just slept on old mattress on the floor until new bed arrived.

I ordered the new bed to arri e the day after moving day. We stayed at an hotel the night of moving day which was the best thing ever. Removal people disposed of the old bed.

To be fair I ordered a relatively inexoensive new bed with a view to releegating it to the guest room once settled in but it was so fabulous, we kept it as ours.

You can store a new mattress on its side in your garage. They come wrapped in plastic.

You can normally schedule a delivery date. And this can be rearranged nearer the time when you’ve definitely got a move in date.

I would get an air bed (a good one) but try and arrange delivery so your only sleeping on it for a few nights. We've recently bought a Tempur mattress and it's the best thing ever!

I agree- order as much as you can after exchange and sleep on the single bed/ pullout until it comes.

I'd buy something that you can use temporarily. If you have kids then roll out beds are useful for sleepovers.

Bensons were not very reliable I'm afraid. When you choose, make sure its an in stock item.
Our bed frame was cancelled
Our daughters bed had to be made in the factory and took ages

Why would you need to bring and reassemble the old bed frame? Just bring the old mattress and sleep with it on the floor for 2-3 days and then get them to take it away when they deliver the new bed. It won’t do you any harm not to have the mattress on a bed frame for a couple of days.

Order your new bed to be delivered the day after moving day, get your old one collected for scrap as close as possible before move out day and sleep on an airbed in between.

Unless you're spending 10k on the mattress, get an IKEA one which can be delivered within a week on a day of your choice. Their top end ones are very good, and significantly cheaper than the branded ones with the same specs

How old was your current mattress when you moved into your current house and how old is it now? They are meant to last 10yrs. I've never had a mattress that has been damaged by being moved or being temporarily stored on it's side. Was it a cheap matress?

It wasn’t that old (3 years) or that cheap - although I can’t remember how much we spent on it in 2018. It ended up on its side in the van and developed a lump in one corner. Over time the lump has slowly become a pit.

Will the supplier allow you to simply schedule delivery late-ish in the day on moving day, when you know when that will be? If anything goes wrong you still have the singles as a backup

Depends who you’re using. We’re waiting to exchange and needed a new mattress, so rang up this week and they’re delivering on Tuesday (Bensons Beds) but they’ll tell you it’s dependent on postcode/availability of what you order. I definite recommend trying out before you buy. My DH ordered something thinking it would be firm, it sinks.

We are using Benson’s for Beds probably and yes absolutely agree about the firm mattresses - we spent an evening last week lying on them so we know which one we like but you’re right so many ones labelled as “firm” really weren’t - who are all these people who life a soft mattress?

When I moved house during my divorce I slept on an airbed for 3 months - I think you're massively overthinking this op.

Get rid of the old bed base before you move - no point carting it in a van and spending precious time building it to have to dismantle again shortly after.

Order new bed when completion is confirmed. If it doesn't come in time you sleep on just the mattress for a few nights. Part of the fun of moving op!

Take the old bed with you. When we moved we did not do this. We did the third option (sort of, we were in a premier inn for the first night) we then had the most ridiculous months (months!! I still want to weep at the ridiculousness) with fucking John Lewis the company keep sending us broken beds and taking forever to pick up and replace with yet another broken one

it might be a faff with assembly and disassembly but you have a guaranteed bed with you to sleep in for both sides of the house moving. House moving is stressful enough without adding crappy sleep in the days prior by sleeping on the floor for a day or two

Order the base when you have the completion date
order the mattress now if you like and push back on delivery if you need to or cancel and reorder of things go wrong

remember the delivery address won’t match your credit card

When I've ordered things for a house move, the shop put a provisional delivery date into the computer, as the system needed one, and told me to contact them to change it when I had a confirmed date.

How long are the lead times? Once you know that
can you order and ask for delivery on a specific date - and push back if they want to deliver earlier

we slept on the floor for a while though

About 4 weeks for the mattress, couple of days for the divan base. The problem is we haven’t exchanged yet but we are very close!

When I’ve moved and changed beds at the same time I’ve just slept on the mattress on the floor temporarily. if you have 2 single mattresses spare does that mean you have 2 single beds? Are they moving with you? I’d just sleep on those, or any spare bed you may have till a new one turns up.

It’s one single bed but it’s one of those ones that has a pull out underneath. It’s coming with us at least for now.

Get rid of the old bed now so it’s not a faff on moving day. Sleep on the 2 singles on the floor for now. Order the new bed to the new address once you’ve exchanged. Singles move with you whilst you wait for the new bed to be delivered.
