This just sounds like you made the right decision if he blocks your son and that’s that.

All you can do is be there for your son and help him through it, it’s hard but it will get easier

It’s absolutely heartbreaking that he’s even blocked my son 💔💔💔💔💔💔

I'm assuming this is not his son? TBH I'd not want an ex boyfriend continuing to see my DS if we'd had a nasty break up and he'd blocked me. It would be odd and I'd wonder why.

Unless you are now going to drip feed that he's been in your son's life since he was a baby, of course.

Saramur · Yesterday 21:40

it’s harsh but maybe he just wants a complete clean break. Assume it’s not his son? How long has he known him?

Snoken · Yesterday 21:45

Has your 16 year old been involved in the breakup or something? Unless this man has been in your son’s life for a very long time I can’t imagine he cares all that much.

4 years. When he left he promised my son that would
still have a relationship 💔

I agree with a pp and wouldn't want contact to continue after a break up.

Sparrowsandbudgies · Yesterday 22:07

I had exactly this situation with my now ex dh, and my dd who was a bit younger than your son at the same (not his dd). It’s hard to see it now but long term it’s for the best. He was only in his life for 4 years. You don’t want either of you to be tied to him forever.

Roseshavethorns · Yesterday 22:07

I think it's probably for the best.
Maintaining contact is just prolonging the hurt for everyone.

ACynicalDad · Yesterday 22:08

Shouldn’t have promised to stay in touch AB’s shouldn’t stay in touch.

Well hes not his dad he could have been kinder but if he only met your son when he was 12 a clean break all round is probaby best.

PermanentTemporary · Yesterday 22:13

Oh man. That’s why going into new relationships with kids is such a huge risk. I’m sorry this has happened.

That's just what people say though isn't it? It's to soften the blow that is really, "I'm off and won't be bothering with you any more.", which is the reality of such splits.

Sorry if I seem harsh, it's very tough on your son who is innocent. But yeah, it's pretty rare for that relationship to stick after the break up.

timtamsarebetterthanpenguins · Yesterday 22:21

He shouldn’t have said he’d stay in touch but it’s kinder than saying “sorry kid, you can fuck off now”.

Indeed its like when people say its not you its me and we will stay friends when they have no intention of staying in touch
They are just trying to soften the blow

Much better to have a clean break then you can all move on. He's obviously not the man you thought he was - He's shown you his true colours and you're better off without him.

Sadly, he's a man of empty words - it can't be the first time he's made empty promises.

Anyway, there are so many men that won't keep in touch with even their biological children, I wouldn't have expected a man to keep in touch with a kid that's not his. 4 years also isn't that long of a relationship to say he's become a proper father figure. It's still sad for your son, though, if he's grown attached to this man.

Millytante · Today 03:41

This man sounds like such a poor excuse of a partner, so your son will surely be better off without his unreliable influence. You can’t see it right now, but he is hardly the pattern of a gentleman, or any kind of guide to responsible and decent masculinity.
Poor lad if he is disappointed, but that guy is definitely not better than nothing, for either of you.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · Today 04:10

Has your son been trying to message him?

TheyGrewUp · Today 04:22

@TheOpalFox just a word of encouragement, I was that 15 year old more than 50 years ago when step 1 buggered off back to his first wife after a couple of years. It had no lasting impact on me and step 1 was a nice chap who treated me well.

Step 2 was almost immediately on the scene. Whilst I have zero time for step 2, he's made my mum happy for nearly 50 years.

NoLifeguardOnDuty · Today 04:36

How horrible for you and your son.
Has your son tried to message him and that's how you know he's blocked him? did you all live together?
Is there anyway you can soften the blow for your son and tell him something like he's probably changing phone numbers or something? Not to cover for your ex but to help your son not feel so bad?
Does your son understand what's happened?

Break ups are hard but if you have children, you have to pick yourself up and show them that you will all be ok. Keep busy and see friends, go out and about with your children, walk in nature and look after yourself. You will get there lovely 💐
