Put step kids above my friend

I have known Sarah since I was a teen, we have DC the same age and at the same school so have become close and spend lots of time together.

Julie is the mother of my step children. She can be difficult and has made lots of bad decisions, DSC live here the majority of the time as a result.
A couple of years ago the relationship was terrible, we couldn’t communicate with her at all and it was really difficult for all of the DC.

Since then I have made a real effort to improve things for the children, I never speak negatively about Julie and try to support and include her wherever I can. I don’t agree with a lot that she does but I don’t think she’s a bad person and we do actually get on ok.

We can now go to any events involving the DSC together but we also speak nearly daily and even go for coffee together once a week without DSC.

Earlier this year Julie started dating Sarah’s newly ex husband. As far as I’m aware there was no cross over but Sarah believes there was and since then my relationship with Sarah has been difficult. She maybe understandably really dislikes Julie but as a result expects me to aswell. She regularly tries to speak badly about Julie with me and gets annoyed when I don’t agree or when she knows I’ve spoken to or met up with Julie.

Weeks of disagreements have come Sarah saying that she feels we can no longer be friends if I continue to have such a close and what she feels unnecessary relationship with Julie.

I really like Sarah, she has supported me through a lot and I do really value our friendship and want to support her back but don’t want to risk my relationship with Julie as I know that would cause problems for my SC.

Am I being unreasonable to put Julie/my step children above Sarah?

No, you aren't being unreasonable at all. Well done for putting your innocent dsc first. None of this is their fault!

I think you should say to Sarah what you've said here. You like her and you want to stay friends but you need to maintain the relationship with Julie for the sake of your dsc. She can either accept it or not, as the case may be.

I really admire your discipline and not taking the bait to enjoy a bitching session or gossip about Julie. I think Sarah is being unfair but I can kind of see it from her perspective too. I think you can solve this diplomatically. You can say you need to maintain a positive relationship with Julie for DSC sake and you will not get drawn into saying anything negative. That way Sarah will know it's not a case of you agreeing or disagreeing with her but a case of you choosing to stay neutral.

I think you have done the right thing and you need to tell Sarah that it is for the dsc ( how old are they?) however you will probably find Sarah backs away from the friendship for a while ( maybe forever) what a horrible place for you to be in. Could you maybe lessen the weekly coffees with Julie?

controlo · Yesterday 20:05

I have tried explaining to Sarah and we’ve been maintaining our friendship with me being neutral for weeks but she doesn’t feel she can accept that anymore.

Any change to Julie would be taken personally and probably cause problems.

How on earth are you meant to cut off the mother of your step children?
I’m assuming she’s talking about you being cordial, not the two of you posting “chummy girls night out” pictures on Facebook

Sartre · Yesterday 20:25

Is Sarah a bit dim? Surely she can understand the need to maintain an amicable relationship with your stepchildren’s mother for their sake?

Tablesandchairs23 · Yesterday 20:45

Sarah needs to grow up.

You wouldn't be putting your SC above your friend, you would be refusing to let a friend persuade you to do something that feels wrong. Sarah has no right to control your relationship with someone else.
