to be annoyed about this situation with neighbour and her dog?

I’m lying awake because I don’t know what to do about this situation.

On Sunday our neighbour came to see us visibly upset. Her mum had been taken into hospital and she had been told to get there asap. Her mum lives in Scotland and we are in the South of England so she was panicking about getting there on time and also about who would look after her dog. We helped her book a flight as she was in a state shaking and in no state to think properly. She asked if we could have her dog for a few days. Reluctantly we agreed but said we were leaving to go on holiday on Friday evening so she would need to make other arrangements by Friday morning for him. We went and collected the dog and he has been with us since. We have our own dogs and they are all getting on well.

Our neighbour text me on Monday to say her mum had died. We had a brief text conversation and obviously I said how sorry I was to hear about her mum.

I text her on Wednesday morning to say that I know she has a lot to deal with but we really need to know what she’s doing about her dog as we are due to go away. I didn’t hear anything so I text her again yesterday to ask what she wanted us to do with the dog and got a text from another of her relatives from her phone saying our neighbour is very upset and isn’t in the right place to sort this out. I replied to say I understood but that when we agreed to have the dog, it was on the condition that she made other arrangements for the dog by Friday morning as we are due to go on holiday. I didn’t get a reply. I tried to call last night but it went to voicemail. I had already called our nearest boarding kennels who do have space so I told her on the voicemail that I could drop him at kennels but she needs to give them her payment details. I still haven’t had a reply from my neighbour.

What do we do? I’ve asked other neighbours and they won’t have him. My parents are having our dogs while we are away but are not willing to take the neighbours dog as well.

A friend has suggested I drop him at our local vets which is the vet my neighbour uses but I don’t think they would be ok with that. Another friend said if it comes to it to call the rspca, explain the situation and say he’s basically been abandoned.

I’m so stressed. I know my neighbour has lost her mum but we are not missing our holiday.

Because sometimes people say ddog here to mean 'dear dog', similar to dh, dc, etc. So the typo's kind of funny in this context. Like the warden is a secret Mumsnetter.

Ahhh….missed the dd. That IS funny.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 07/08/2026 09:20

I lost my mum last year and would never have failed to sort out the dog, especially when someone had done me a great favour at short notice.

This is a poor show on the part of your neighbour. If she is too upset to speak then she should have got one of her relatives to sort it out. I think kennels is the best option. If you don't want to pay for kennels I think it's worth contacting her vet for advice. So irresponsible and selfish of her.

Right? How hard is it to hand your debit card to whoever's there supporting you and say, 'Can you sort this, please? I'm too devastated.' Then you can go back to crying.

I’m torn between thinking she’s grieving and not thinking straight, and thinking she’s an irresponsible twat who has now caused us a big problem.

She is a cheeky fucker, OP and how dare she put stress on to you. Text her/call her and tell her you'll be handing the dog over to a shelter unless she either gets her arse back today or pays for kennels. You shouldn't have to pay for the dog to board and lots of people wouldn't have that kind of money anyway, so be very firm with her. Bereavement or not, it doesn't affect her responsibility towards her dog and certainly she's taken massive advantage of your good nature. Ooof, I'm so angry she has caused you stress before your lovely holiday.

The RSPCA will kill the dog.
Surely, 3 dogs is no worse than 2 dogs?

OP can't force her parents to take the extra dog!

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 07/08/2026 09:23

Are you in a neighbourhood Facebook group?

I'd post begging for someone to look after it, along with a photo of the dog so everyone who knows this woman will see what she's done. Hopefully she's in the group too and sees it.

CantGetBackToSleep · 07/08/2026 07:03

I’m not going to take him to kennels if it means us paying as I’m not sure I’d get the money back.

You definitely wouldn’t get the money back,

itsgettingweird · 07/08/2026 09:25

Grief does weird things to people.

But that doesn’t make it your problem to solve.

You also cannot spend all day sorting this out when you’re going away.

O would put a time scale on the text as well as Biden e to cover yourself if needed.

“As I have informed you I am going on holiday today. If you haven’t responded by 10am with instruction of what to do with your dog then I’m going to …..”

If you do need to send dog to the pound or wherever it’ll help you to have written evidence in case she decides to get difficult later.

I'm actually wondering (as another poster was) if the neighbour has actually lost her mother, or if she's on some hen do overseas or something?

But then I'm a cynical old bat. 😎

I actually wondered if her mum had died or it was just an excuse too. Cheeky fucker sounds the sort of person to do that.

My, you sound unpleasant. Do you speak to people in that deliberately patronising way in real life, or only from the safety of your keyboard?

Toddlingabout2 · 07/08/2026 09:14

Are there no other neighbours in the street that might be able to help temporarily?

The OP is packing her bags to go on holiday. She had been clear to the dog’s owner that this was going to be the case.

I do occasional pet sitting for family and friends. Invariably I get daily texts asking for an update. Responsible owners care.

I get that the neighbor has been bereaved. She still needs to sort out the care of her pet.

I may get jumped on, but I feel this is a bit like saying "well, your parents are looking after your children, why can't they take mine as well?".

Nousernameideaaga · 07/08/2026 09:27

Let us know what happens to the Doggy OP 😢

Sahara123 · 07/08/2026 09:28

I don’t see what the vet can do, you can’t just leave it there !
Probably a bit late now, but dogs trust and rspca do dog fostering according to Google.

Morepositivemum · 07/08/2026 09:29

Op I know you’re fed up of hearing this but the only thing to do is bring him to the kennels. Part pay and figure the rest out after the holidays. Ridiculous of the relative that said your neighbour was too upset not to help out

The problem is that most Kennels’s will not take a dog without proof that their vaccinations are up to date.

This. If you lose your mother, your dog is your comfort and you don't want to lose ot too.

ForWiseRoseCat · 07/08/2026 09:31

Google says to contact the local council/dog warden and rescues as the dog is now abandoned.

It also says to keep a paper trail, so send one last message saying what you will do with the dog, then contact the dog warden to register the dog as abandoned and tell them the owner has abandoned them with you, then contact local rescues and the RSPCA as the dog is abandoned.

Your neighbour doesn't deserve to get her dog back. Poor thing.

NCForOneNightOnly · 07/08/2026 09:32

Something isn’t sitting right here. No committed responsible dog owner would do this and not even enquire how thier pet was, even in a state of grief. Could the initial conversation and distress have been a show because she wanted to go away and couldn’t find anyone to take the dog?

Skippyasyermuni · 07/08/2026 09:32

Do you know her mum’s name and location? She is probably staying at her mum’s home, so you could try and get the landline number from the online phone book? Call that and see if anyone answers.

I’d send a text message with the details about the vet, kennels etc in case she isn’t listening to voicemails. I’d also maybe include a line like,”I know this is a very difficult time and I don’t want to make anything arse for you but I’ve been put into a situation where I can’t really avoid it. We are not losing £4000 (or whatever the holidays cost) and missing our holiday so the dog needs alternate care.”

She needs to be told that her sad situation isn’t your financial hit to take.

BlueFlowerOwl · 07/08/2026 09:33

I’d take him to the local animal shelter and explain he’s been abandoned rather than the vet. How sad, poor dog ☹️

liveforsummer · 07/08/2026 09:34

Vets is probably the easiest option. You often see a post saying an animal has been handed in to a local surgery. They can sort where it goes next. Given your time scale other options such as rspca may not work

PretendToBeToastWithMe · 07/08/2026 09:34

Do you or your neighbour have a particularly close relationship with the vet? I think in most situations it would be unlikely for a vet to take it, I doubt my vet would. Vets make a living by providing medical care to sick/injured animals for payment and often don’t have capacity to provide other services for free. I agree with others that it will likely need to be the dog warden as this is actually their role.

DoloresDelEriba · 07/08/2026 09:34

Cinnamon Trust will help

Onegingerhead · 07/08/2026 09:35

Kennels can usually obtain vaccination records by phoning the vet and the OP knows the dog’s vet. Having said that, kennels might be all booked (holiday season)
